QUIK f UNITED STATES PATENT OEEroEC JEREMIAH A. WEAKLEY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKING-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,566, dated December 5, 1871 antedated November 16, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .IEREMIAH A. WEAKLEY,
. of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State or" Indiana, have invented anv Improvement in Fenders for (look-Stoves, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the combination of a detachable solid fender with the front opening in the fire-box ot' a cook-stove, inside of the ordinary doors closing over the same, so as to cover the opening and leave only a narrow air-space at may be at pleasure readily detached and entirely removed from the stove.
Figure I is an elevation of the front of my improved cook-stove; Fig. 2, an elevation of the front plate, with its ornamentation omitted, showing the opening therein; the fender to close the same being illustrated below as detached. Fig. 3 is a transverse section in line .r x of Fig. 1.
A is the stove; B, its front plate; and C, (Fig. 2,) the opening therein. An offset or recess, d, is formed around the opening C to receive the rim of a solid plate or fender, E, (see Fig. 2,) which is made so much larger than the opening as to close the sa-me when placed over it, excepting only a narrow space, s, along the bottom thereof. (See Figs. l and 3.) This fenderplate E is secured in place over the opening C by means of wedge-shaped bars t' i, projecting from either end, which are caught under lugs t t (see Fig. 3) projecting from the plate B at the edge of its opening C, as clearly illustrated in the drawing. This mode of fastening permits a ready detachment of the fender by simply raising it and thus lifting the bars out of the lugs. G (in dotted lines, Fig. 3) illustrates a handle for raising and removing the fender E from the stove, the end of the handle being made to it into a socket, w, formed in the fender for its reception, as shown in the drawing. F F are the sliding doors which close over the fender C. (See one of them closed in Fig. l.) These doors are provided with air-registers in the'upper portion thereof', and traverse far enough in front of the fender C to leave an air-space between the doors and fender, as illustrated in Fig. 3, so that the currents entering through the register will pass over the face of the fender, and, becoming heated, will flow in a hot draught under the same to the tire. H, Figs. l and 3, is a light grate placed within the lire-box to support the fuel above the ash-pit K beneath.
I do not claim as new the use of a fender E to protect the front doors of the stove and to produce a hot-air draught; but believe the combination of a single solid fender with the opening of the fire-box in a cook-stove, in manner as herein described, Without hinges or other permanent fastenings, but in such manner as that it may be readily detached and removed, to be novel and of my invention.
By means thereof I am enabled to remove the fender entirely in order to use the direct heat of the fire and coals in toasting, broiling, &c., and to use the stove with the front doors singly when it is required simply for heating purposes. I am also not only enabled to supply the fender at a very cheap cost, reducing the price of the stove, but also to replace the same, when it is worn or burned out, without difticulty, at slight expense.
I claim as my invention- A removable solid fender, E, combined with the opening U in the front plate B of a cook-stove, substantially as herein set forth.
As witness my hand hereto.
Witnesses: J. A. WEAKLEY.
