A
.This invention relates to an 'improved washing machine, and -one foftherobjec'ts fof provide a device l'of this kind iinvwhichsimp'le, improved, eficient, and practical features of construction fare finvolved. l
One of the features-of=construction is to provide a washing machine receptacle having 4va multiplicity Aof rolls arranged therein vertically and consecutively annularly'ad'jacent the inner wall of the receptacle, and designed to rotate simultaneously, each in the same direction, and one toward the other, and provided with spiral grooves, the tendency of which being to remove the dirt from the clothes as the rollers rub the clothes, and churn and agitate the suds toward the clothes.
A further feature of the construction is to provide the upper ends of the rolls with gears, there being a ring rack in mesh with said gears, to impart motion to the rolls.
A further feature of construction is the provision of a gear for imparting motion to the ring rack, and having means to hold the rack in position on the upper end of the washing machine receptacle.
In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings Y Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved washing machine constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the machine, on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig.'1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 1 of Fig. 2.

iEigJ fis a detail lview lshowing fa hand crank Vmechanism for 'rotatin'gthe ringira'ck.
VReferringtimore especially to the drawings, i1 adesi'gnat'es a "washing machine recepftacle, Jwlhich may gbeof any Lsuitable shape or configuration, preferably cylindrical, and 'may lbe 'mounted upon afn-y suitable E`leg ;s"2. (fh'ebottomi) oflthelreceptacle on lvits interior is provided "with plurality 'of sockets 21,to f'r'eceive and fconst'itute' -b 'arings `for the fpintles 5 of the vertical rolls 6, whichare a'rranged annularly adjacent fthe cylindrical wall l'ofthe receptacle l.
7j, 1in bearings "of Lwhich the pintles 5'8 of the rolls are mounted. The intles 8 areprovided with 'gears 9. A llo'sure "10 engages 'the'opening l1 of the upper end of said receptacle. The exterior of the receptacle 1 near its upper end is provided with a plurality of brackets 12. A circular ring 13 angular in cross section fits upon the upper end of the receptacle 1. The inner edge of the iiange 14 of said ring has gear teeth 15 meshing with the teeth of the gears 9, so that when the ring 13 is rotated in one direction or the other, the gears 9 correspondingly rotate, which in turn will rotate the rolls. The rolls respectively rotate in the same direction one toward the other,
ed from being drawn in between the rolls. The rolls are provided with spiral grooves 16, and the grooves of every other roll eX- tend spirally in an opposite direction to the grooves of the intermediate rolls. The ring 13 is angular in order to tit and rotate on the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 2. The exterior of the ring is provided with gear teeth 17, which are engaged by the teeth 18 of the gear 19. A bracket 20 is secured by screws 21 to the receptacle 1, and is provided with a cylindrical bearing 22, rin which the shaft 23 is mounted. Collars 24 are se'- cured on the shaft 23 by the pins 25, one above and one below the bearing 22, to prevent axial movement of the' shaft shaft 23 has its upper portion rectangular, so that the gear 19 will rotate therewith. A pulley 26 is fitted upon the rectangular portion 27 of said shaft 23, so that any suitable power may be belted to the shaft, to rotate the v*gear 19. The gear 19 has an annular Theiupp'er end 'of the receptacle hasanlinturnedannularflange n and byY so rotating the rolls the clothes are prevent- 23. The' extension flange 28, to overlie the ring 13, thereby preventing upward movement of the ring. rIhe brackets 12 overlie the ring 13, to insure holding the same in place. A suitable crank 29 is provided, and has a socket 30, to receive the upper end of the rectangularportion 27 of the shaft 23, whereby the shaft may be rotated manually, for operating the ring, which in turn will impart movement to the rolls.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful, is
1. ln awashing machine of the kind set forth, the combination of a cylindrical receptacle and a plurality of rolls having 0pposite spiral grooves and mounted vertically in bearings of the bottom of the receptacle to rotate adjacent to the interior wail of the receptacle, of gears upon the upper ends of the rolls, and means mounted on the receptacle meshing with the gears respectively to impart movement to the rolls, all in the same direction.
2. In a washing machine of the kind set forth, the combination of a cylindrical receptacle and a plurality of rolls having 0pposite spiral grooves and mounted vertically Copies of this patent may be obtained for in bearings of the bottom of the receptacle to rotate adjacent to the interior wall of the receptacle, of gears upon the upper ends of the rolls, and meansmonnted on the recep tacle meshing with the gears respectively to impart movement to the rolls all in the same direction, said means comprising a circular ring angular inicross section to fit the upper end of the receptacle, brackets to support said ring and hold the same in place, one flange of the ring having teeth on its inner edge meshing with the gears respectively of the rolls, said ring having exterior teeth, a shaft mounted in a bearing on the exterior of the receptacle, and a gear mounted on said shaft to rotate therewith and meshing with the exterior teeth of the ring and having an annular extension iiange overlying the ring to prevent raising of the ring, and means for rotating said shaft.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
