- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES Almost), a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cooking Stoves or Ranges for Marine Vessels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cookingstoves or ranges for marine vessels, and particularly to means for mounting or supporting the same, whereby the stove will be maintained in an erect position at all times, allowing the use of the stove for cooking and other purposes during stormy weather, and even when the ship is pitching or rolling to a great extent.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a supporting base'or structure which will universally adjust itself to all fore-and-aft and lateral motions of the vessel, while the stove itself, acting in the nature of a pendulum weight, will maintain an erect position, the construction being such that the stove may be employed with convenience and facility at all times.

A further object of the invention is to provide a stove pipe for the exhaust of the smoke and products of combustion from the stove, which pipe is composed of extensible and universally jointed sections to permit of the requisite relative movements between the vessel and stove without impairing the continuity of the smoke outlet.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a cooking stove and support constructed in accordance with my invention. 7

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a stove or range, of the ordinary galley or other preferred type, and which may be of general or ordinary construction, except that it is provided with an arcuately curved bottom plate 2. Suitably fixed to this plate and to the body of the stove, at the front and rear thereof, are longitudinally curved rockers 3 carrying wheels or rollers 4:.

The stove is directly supported by an inner frame or cradle 5, consisting of an open rectangular base portion, said base portion being provided with front and rear upright portions 6 and side rockers or rails 7 V The uprights 6 extend transversely across the inner frame or cradle and are provided on their-inner sides with the guideways 8 and track rails 9, which respectively receive the rockers or rails 3 and wheels or rollers 4 upon the bottom of the stove. The uprights thus constitute the track members, and said uprights are curved or concaved on their upper sides on the arcs of circles, thus exposing the front and rear portions of the stove or range, so that access may be conveniently obtained thereto.

The inner frame or cradle is arranged within a trough shaped outer frame or eradle 10, which consists of abed or base plate 11, side walls 12, and front and rear retaining strips 13 and 14. The said side walls 12 are provided with grooves or guideways 15 and track rails 16, which are arcuately curved and are similar to the guideways 8 and rails 9. These guideways 15 receive the side rails or rockers 7 of the inner frame or cradle, which are provided with wheels or rollers 17 engaging the rails 16. The front retaining strip 14 of the outer frame or cradle is depressed below the plane of the upper surfaces of the side walls so as to ex-' or cradle, which extend in a direction longitudinally of the ship. Hence when the ship. pitches in a fore-and-aft direction the outer frame or cradle, being fixed to it, by

means of bolts or other suitable fastenings '18, will move correspondingly, but the inner placing it from a plumb position. When the vessel rolls laterally the inner frame or cradle will roll with the outer frame or cradle, but the Wheels of the stove will travel in the groove or guideways of said inner frame or cradle and the weight of the stove V will maintain it in a normal position against displacement as the cradles roll laterally with the ship. Since the. stove will therefore at all times maintain a normal or erect position, a fire may be kept therein and cooking and other operations performed thereon even during very stormy Weather, when the ship rolls or pitches to a considerable deree. g While the construction described is preferred, it will of course be understood that modification within the spirit and scope of walls being provided with guide grooves on their inner faces, said grooves being adapted to receive rails and rollers upon the stove, and an outer cradle receiving said inner cradle, said outer cradle having its side walls provided with arcuate grooves slidably receiving the arcuate side rails of the inner cradle.
