Description

A. R. KINKELAAR.
ARTICLE HOLDER.
APPLICATION HLED APR. 30. m5.
1,214,?95. Patented Feb. 6,1917.
AUGUST R. KINKELAAR, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
ARTICLE-HOLDER.
Application filed April 30.
To cZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST R. KINKE- LAAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Article-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to supporting devices and particularly to devices for holding articles such as hats and papers against this support, either forming a part of the device itself or otherwise. The object of the invention is to provide an improved supporting device which, when attached to a support, firmly grips the article being held and may be made to readily release the same, and which device operates without the production of noise and which will not disturb an assembly in the hall or room.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the device showing it for use in supporting a hat; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device itself; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the device and through the support.
In carrying out the invention any preferred form and construction of parts may be employed so long as they possess the necessary characteristics, but I have shown one arrangement which meets with the requirement, and in such embodiment 1 represents a suitable support which may be a block, wall or pew-back. Secured to this support by means of screws 2 is a base 3 having formed integral therewith an overhanging bracket 4 preferably extending downward and U-shaped in cross section, so as to form side walls 5 near the outer end. These side walls receive a pivot pin 6 for a purpose to be described. The connecting portion of the bracket between the side walls 5 near the outer end is rovided with a socket 7 receiving a bum er pad 8 and another socket 9 receiving a bumper pad 10, this latter socket and pad being arranged just to the rear of Specification of Letters Patent.

the pin 6. Swiveled on the pivot pin is a dog 11 having a serrated article engaging member 12 which is adapted to engage the article and force it toward the support 1. The article engaging member 12 is arranged to be swung backward out of operative position and a portion of it engages the pad 8. On the opposite side of the pivot pin 6 the dog is provided with a finger piece 13 adapted to be engaged by the finger of the user in manipulating the dog. The dog is further provided inside of the finger piece with a lug 14 adapted to engage the ad 10 when the article is removed to prevent the (102' from contacting with the support and thereby prevent any noise being produced by thedog when released. Surrounding the pin 6 is a spring 15 which engages the inside wall of the bracket 4 and also engages the dog, causing the same to assume a normal position with its article engaging portion 12 toward the support, as shown in Fig. 2. The dog is so mounted that the serrated surface of the article engaging member 12 is out of contact with the support so that the lug 14 will engage the pad 10, thus preventing any noise when the dog is released after removal of the article.
The device may be utilized for supporting articles generallv, but is especially adapted for supporting hats in churches and auditoriums upon the pew-backs.
Having described my invention, I claim An article holding device, comprising a base adapted to be secured to a support, an outwardly extending depending arm on said base, a pivoted dog carried by the lower end of said arm and at one end arranged to engage an article for clamping it against said support, stop devices for preventlng sald dog from contacting with said support, and a cushion carried by said arm to be engaged by said dog for preventing noise when the dog is retracted.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses as follows:
G. O. FAR UHARsoN, C. H. SHOTZBARGER.
