KING-BOLT FOR WAGONS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 36 1917:.
Application filed June 2, 1916. Serial No. 191,405.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, HIRAM B. BAXTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainville, in the county of Books, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in King-Bolts for \Vagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to king bolts for wagons.
The object of the invention is to provide a king bolt for wagons embodying an improved construction designed to prevent rotation of the bolt relatively to the wawn body and the wagon bolster and to secure the body of the bolt to the head in such manner that the likelihood of the body becoming separated from the head is obviated.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding-parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a section through a fragment of a wagon body, wagon bolster and gear bolster showing the improved king bolt applied; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the king bolt, and Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings the improved king bolt is shown as comprising a shank or 40 body 10 one end of which is squared as at 11. The other end of the body 10 is reduced and threaded as at 12. The head of the bolt comprises a substantially conical body 13 the minor end of which is provided with a recess 14 having a reduced threaded portion. 15 in which the reduced portion 12 of the body 10 is adapted to be screwed. The major portion of the recess 14 is adapted to receive a lock washer 16 for securing the head and body against relative rotation. The major end. of the head is provided with a circumscribing flange 17, while a plurality of longitudinal ribs 18 are formed on the body 13.
In applying the bolt the head is driven into a suitable opening or rather suitable openings in the body bolster 20. The flange 17 is countersunk into the bolster 20 and the ribs 18 bite into the bolster and thus secure the head of the bolt against rotation relatively to the bolster 20. The body 10 is then screwed to the head and the application of the bolt is complete. I
What is claimed is A king bolt for wagons comprising a body having one end squared, a head screwed on the other end of said body, said head being substantially conical in shape, a circumscribing flange on the major end of the head, and a plurality (if longitudinal ribs formed on the head.
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
