CANOPY.
Application filed November 3, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMORY O. \VHrrcoMB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Canopies, of which the following descriptiomin connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to canopies of general construction and to frames therefor, the canopy being adapted for use in connection with beds, hammocks of various descriptions and other supports in other relations.
In order that the principle of the invention may be readily understood, I have disclosed a single embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the central portion of a canopy frame embodying my invention Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the construction shown in Fig. l, the canopy rods being indicated in operative position in full lines and in storage position in dotted lines; Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the frame shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a plan View of the complete canopy; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 4.
An important object of my invention is to provide a canopy and canopy frame for general use which are comparatively simple in construction and therefore may be readily and inexpensively manufactured.
Other objects of the invention will be set forth more fully hereinafter.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have therein represented a central or body member 1, which may be of any suitable material, but preferably is metallic and desirably is cast. Said central or body member is preferably formed as a series of radiating members 2 each being strengthened, if desired, by a longitudinal rib 3 and extending from the head 1, said central or body member being thus of a general spider form. I have herein represented six radiating parts, but any suitable number may, of course, be employed. The head 4 is adapted to receive a canopy-supporting device and preferably for that purpose it is provided with a central opening 5 to receive the threaded portion 6 of a supporting hook 7. Preferably the head 4 is of relatively thin metal, so that it may act as a nut to receive the threaded portion of Specification of Letters Patent.

the hook 7, thereby permitting the latter to be adjustably positioned therein. 1 have herein represented the hook as having a flange 8 and if desired a suitable washer 9 may be interposed between the upper surface of the head 4 and the flange 8. Each of said radiating parts 2 is provided with a seat, socket or other formation to receive the rods of the frame. For this purpose and as clearly indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I have represented each of the parts 2 as having its outer end downwardly bent at 10, and then upwardly bent at 11, so as to form an eye or socket within which are received the several rods, herein six in number, and indicated respectively at 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17. Each. of said rods is right angularly bent as indicated at 18, such bent portion being received within the corresponding eye 10, 11. Radially inwardly of the bent portion 18, each rod is bent at 19 into parallelism with the outer part thereof and at its extreme inner end is bent at 20 into parallelism with the bent portion 18. The terminal bent portion 20 acts as a stop which, when the rod is positioned as indicated in full lines in the several figures, bears against the under side of the central or body member 1 at any suitable point and preferably adjacent the inner end of the corresponding radiating part 2.
Any suitable textile or other flexible ma terial may be employed in connection with the canopy frame. I have herein indicated the use of mosquito or other netting at 21 in Figs. 4 and 5. The said netting may be secured in the frame in any suitable manner. Preferably the hook 7 is passed through the netting at the central or body portion 1, and preferably each of the single rods is provided with a hooked end 22 to which the netting may be secured in any suitable manner.
It will be evident from the foregoing de scription that the canopy frame is composed of substantially a minimum of parts and yet is of strong and extremely serviceable construction. The frame may be readily folded into condition for storage or transportation by rocking the rods into the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the said rods being brought into substantial parallelism. The netting may be readily wrapped or folded about the frame with the rods in the position shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims:
Claims:
1. A canopy frame having a central body member and a series of rods having laterally bent portions pivotally supported upon said member, said rods having their inner ends extending inwardly beyond their bent portions and constituting stops adapted to co-act with said central body member.
2. A canopy frame having a central body member provided with a series of eyes extending transversely of said member, and a corresponding series of rods pivotally supported in said eyes, said rods having their inner ends extending inwardly beyond said eyes and constituting stops adapted to co-act with said central body member.
3. A canopy frame having a central body member provided with spaced eyes and a se- Qoples of this patent may be obtained for ries of rods having laterally bent portions pivotally supported in said eyes and laterally bent stop portions 20 adapted to engage said central body member between said eyes and the central part of said body.
5. A canopy frame having a central body member 1 provided with eyes 10, 11 and a series of rods having laterally bent portions 18 pivoted Within said eyes, each of said rods having their inner terminal portion 20 constituting a stop and adapted to engage the member 1.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
EMORY O. WHITCOMB.
