BUTTON 0R CLASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3Q, 19171.
Application filed March 17, 1915. Serial No. 14,934.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK P. BURNETT and VANDERHOFF M. VAN BRUNT, citizens of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Buttons or Clasps; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in jewelry employed with cuffs, ties and garments; and the invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of' cufi-button, comprising a pair of pivotally connected or hinged members and an automatically operating selflocking post coiiperating with one of said members for readily securing the button in its attached relation to a cuff, or the like, and for just as easily removing the same from such attached relation with the cuff or garment.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide a novel article of manufacture, in the form of a cuif-button, tie-clasp, or the like, which is simple in its operation for retaining the cuff, tie, or the like, in the proper position. The invention has for its further object to provide a device of the general character hereinafter stated which is easily secured in its attached position with out the least trouble and annoyance, and which is of such construction that it can not be accidentally removed from the cull or garment to which it is attached.
()ther objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
The invention consists, primarily, in the novel article of manufacture, in the form of a cuff-button, tie-clasp, or the like, hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the fol lowing specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended toand which form an essential part of the said specification.
While'we are fully aware that the principles of the present. invention may be combined to provide an article of manufacture, or a piece of jewelry, which may be variously used with garments, or the like, it has been deemed sufiicient for the purposes of the invention to describe and illustrate the present invention in the form of a cuff-button. The invention, therefore, is clearly and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a cuff-button showing one embodiment of the principles of the present invention, representing the button in its attached relation upon a cufi, a fragmentary part of the latter being represented in said view; and Fig. 2 is a rear face view of the parts illustrated in said Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the cuff-button, with the pivoted or hinged members thereof represented in their locked relation; and Fig. 4c is a similar view of the button, the pivoted or hinged members thereof being represented in their unlocked or unlatched relation for attaching the button to or for removing it from the cuff. Fig. 5 is a top-face view of a modified form of cuff-button, but still made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, said section being taken on line 66 in said Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is a transverse vertical section of the button, said section being taken on line 77 in said Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrow as, both of said views showing the pivoted or hinged members of the button in their locked relation. Fig. 8 is a view of the device, similar to that represented in said Fig. 7, but showing a pivoted lock-bar in its unlatched relation, to permit the separated relation of the pivoted orhinged member for attachment to or for removal from a cuff, or the like.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 1,2, 3 and 4; of the drawings, the reference character 1 indicates a suitably formed back or base-plate provided with suitably-d1sposed pintle-receiving ears or lugs 2, and a vertically extending post, as 3. This post is usually made flat, as indicated in the drawings, and may be riveted to said base plate, as at 4, the post being provided with an angularly formed slot, as 5, whereby two members 6 and 7 are provided, substantially as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. The upper edge of the member 6 is fiat, as at 8, said flat edge providing a suitable stop or seat, and the member 7 is provided upon its upper end with a retaining catch or head, as 9, located substantially above stop or seat, in the manner shown and for the purposes to be presently more fully described. "Within the previously-mentioned ears or lugs 2 is a pintle 10, and mounted upon said pintle 10, in the manner of a hinge, are pintle-ears or lugs 12 of a yokeshaped or other suitably shaped element 11. Connected with the free end-portion of said element 11, in any suitable manner, is a top or face-plate, as 13, formed in the proper place with an elongated slot or opening 14. This top or face-plate fectly plain, as will be evident, or it may be provided with a marginal bead, as 15, for clamping in position upon said top or face-plate 13, a dished ornamental member 16 of the usual button-shape, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Figs. 1, 3 and 4 of the drawings.
To attach the button in its locked relation to a cuff 17, the parts of the button are brought into the unlocked or unlatched relation shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The post of the button is inserted through the registering button holes of the cuff, with the back-plate of the button located upon one side of the double-over portions of the cuff. The yoke-shaped member of the button is made to extend toward and around the edges 18 of the cuff as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, and the slotted portion of the faceplate 13 inserted over the post 5 and readily snapped into a positive retaining or holding engagement with the latch or head 9 of said post 5, the face-plate 13 coming against the stop 8 and being positively seated between said stop and the said latch or head 9 against any accidental displacement, as ;will be clearly understood from an inspection of said Fig. 3.
When it is desired to remove the button from the out]? all that is necessary is to apply suflicient pressur against the bent or curved portion of the yoke-shaped member 11, in
the direction of the arrow 3 in said Fig. 3, whereupon the hinged or pivotal arrangement of the parts will permit of the withdrawal of the latch or head 8, suflieiently in the elongated slot 14, from its holding or retaining engagement with the face-plate 13,
18 may be left perto bring the parts into their pivoted or hinged separation clearly represented in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
In lieu of the form of button illustrated in said Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the button may be made in the manner shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 of the drawings, and still embody the principles of the present invention. In this construction, the reference-character 19 indicates a suitably formed back or base plate also provided with suitably-disposed pintlereceiving ears or lugs 20, and a vertically extending post, as 21. This post is also usually made flat as indicated in the drawings, and in its upper end-portion is provided with a vertically extending slot,
as 22, to provide a bifurcated end-portion .28. Suitably mounted in the members which form this bifurcated end-portion, and extending across said slot 22, is a pin 24 upon which is fulcrumed a lock-bar, as 25, having its end-portions preferably roughened or serrated, as at 26, for the proper manipulation of said bar, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings.
Within the previously-mentioned ears or lugs 20 is a pintle 27, and mounted upon said pintle 27, in the manner of a hinge, are pintle-ears or lugs 28 of a yoke-shaped or other suitably formed member 29 of a top or face-plate- 30 which may be of any desired marginal configuration and surface ornamentation. At the proper position, the said top or face-plate is provided with an elongated hole or slot, as at 31, for the insertion of the bifurcated endportion of the part 21, when the lock-bar 25 has been turned into the position indicated in Fig. 8 of the drawings, into and through the hole or slot '31 in the face-plate 80. By turning the lock-bar 25 at right angles across said hole or slot 31, after such insertion, in the manner represented in Figs. 5 and 7 of the drawings, the pivoted or hinged members of the button are readily and positively retained in locked or latched relation, as will be clearly evident. The pivoted or hinged members of the button are easily brought into their unlocked or unlatched relation by turning the lockbar 25 into the position indicated in said Fig. 8, and any further description as to the manner of attaching the device to a cuif or a garment is deemed unnecessary.
We are fully aware that various changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended to the said specification. Hence, we no not limit our present invention to the exact arrangements and combinaemma tions of the said parts as described in the said specification, nor do we confine ourselves to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
We claim 1. As a new article of manufacture a device of the character specified comprising a pair of pivotally connected members adapted to be separated in a hinge-like manner, a post connected with one of said main members, said post being formed with an angularly shaped slot so as to provide the post with a bifurcated end-portion, one of the members of said bifurcated end-portion providing a seat, and a retaining catch connected with the other member of said bifurcated portion, and a retaining means connected with the other member adapted to be brought into separable retaining engagement with the seat and catch of the bifurcated portion of said post.
2. As a new article of manufacture a device of the character specified comprising a pair of pivotally connected main members adapted to be separated in a hinge-like manner, a post connected with one of said main members, said post being formed with an angularly shaped slot so as to provide the post with a bifurcated end-portion, one of the members of said bifurcated end-portion providing a seat, and a retaining catch connected with the other member of said bifurcated portion, and the other main member being provided with a slot for arranging said member over the bifurcated end-portion of said post and bringing said member into separable retaining engagement with the seat and catch of the bifurcated portion of said post.
3. As a new article of manufacture a device of the character specified comprising a back-plate, a yoke-like element connected with said back-plate in a hinge-like manner a face-plate connected with said yoke-like element, a post connected with said backplate, said post being formed'with an angularly shaped slot so as to provide the post with a bifurcated end-portion, one of the members of said bifurcated end-portion providing a seat, and a retaining catch connected with the other member of said bifurcated portion, and the said face-plate being provided with a slot for arranging said faceplate over the bifurcated end-portion of said post and for bringing said face-plate into separable retaining engagement with the seat and catch of the bifurcated portion of said post.
In testimony, that we claim the invention set forth above we have hereunto set our hands this 15th day of March, 1915.
