Description

aw $-mm mjnraw Gauge for N0. 121,418. i
ft/ave Joners.
Patented Novl 28,1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WASHBURN RACE AND SHERMAN D. HOOPER, OF LOGKPORT, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAUGES FOR STAVE-JOINTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,418, dated November 28, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WAsHBURN RAGE and SHERMAN D. HooPER, of Lockport, in the county of Niagara and `State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Gauges for Stave-Jointers, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention relates to the combination of a gauge with the gate of a stavc-jointer in such a manner as to prevent the cutting off' of more of the edge of the stave than is necessary to give it a perfect form, thereby making a great saving in material.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gate of a stave-jointer with our improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken on the line 00min Fig. l.
A is the gate of an ordinary stave-jointer. B is a cross-piece attached to the sides ofthe gate A below the knife H. The part C is fastened to the cross-piece B by means of the set-screw d, which passes through a slot E. F is an arm, whichis hinged to the part C at a. G is a spring,
which is attached to the part C, and is provided with an adjusting-screw b. c is a set-screw, which regulates the distance between the edge of the knife H and the arm F. rEhe shoulder d prevents the arm from swinging toward the knife.
When a stave is to be jointed it is brought against the arm F 5 the knife is forced down, taking off only enough of the stave to make a perfect edge. If it should be necessary to take off more from the edge of the ystave than the position of the gauge will allow, the stave may be forced back, moving the arm F with it. The spring G brings the arm F into position as soon as the knife has taken off the edge of the stave.
We claim as our invention- The combination of the cross-piece B, part C, arm F, and accompanying devices, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
