Be it known that I, FRANK A. GUsrAvsoN, a subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Seelronlr, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, United Statesof America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilatore and Air-Purifying Apparatus, lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a ventilator and air purifying apparatus and has for its object to provide such an apparatus with one or more rotary fans actuated by the passing air current, and located in a suitable housing or flue, which contains a reservoir filled with carbolic acid, or other suitable germicide,whose fumes in rising mix with the incoming air and serve to destroy germs which may be therein contained, and also to provide a fine screen covering the flue exit to prevent the passage of impurities into the room.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Of the accompanying drawings: Figure 1- is an elevation in cross section through the air draft flue. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a front view of the housing or flue with the adjustable shutter removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rear gauze cover plate to which is hinged a heavier wire screen door.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the outside portion of the building to which the apparatus is attached, and 2 the housing or flue through which the draft of air is conducted to the interior of the building, the inside wall of which is illustrated at 3. This housing or draft flue may be constructed of metal or other suitable material and is preferably made in a rectangular form, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The front face of the flue is provided with a laterally extending flange l all around to cover the opening as the device is set from the outside into the apparatus in the wall of the building formed to receive it. This front face plate of this flue is provided with circular openings 5 and 6 across which extends the bars 7 and 8 respectively. This front plate is also provided with vertical slots 9 and 10 located at opposite edges thereof. An adjustable draft controlling shutter 11 is of which the folhinged at 12 to said front plate, the same being provided with rearwardly extending wings 13 on either end thereof which are adapted to enter the Slots 9 and 10 respectively whereby the top and ends of this shutter may be closed even when the lower portion is opened for the admission of air.
l have herein shown two circular rotary fans 15, each having a plurality of blades and each being mounted on its ball bearing hub 16, the front ends of these hubs are arranged to be supported on the cross bars 7 and 8 respectively, while each of their rear ends is supported on the thin upright spring standard 17 supported from the base of the flue. This resilient supporting standard is adapted to yield slightly as the incoming draft acts upon the rotary fans and also provides simple and effective means whereby the wear in the bearings of the constantly rotating fans may be automatically taken up. Said fans serve to break up a direct draft and to distribute the incoming air throughout the interior space of housingl 2.
An essential feature of my apparatus is the provision of a reservoir 18 which is preferably constructed of porcelain, or other suitable noncorrosive material and in which is carried carbolic acid, or other suitable germicide. ward over this reservoir to mix with the fumes rising therefrom I have provided a lower wall or partition 19, an intermediate partition 20 and an upper wall or partition 21, which latter extends around and completely covers the upper half of the fan opening so that the inflowing air can pass in only throughthelower half thereof, said partition 21 having a forwardly inclined portion extending downward toward reservoir 18. The inner ends of these partitions 19 and 20 curve slightly upward so as todeflect the air in that direction to mix with the rising fumes from the germicide reservoir, the forward edge of said partition 19 terminating at the rear upper edge of said reservoir 18. A. very fine screen 22, constructed of cloth or other suitable material, is placed over the inner end of this iue in a suitable frame 23, see Fig. 8, to prevent the passage of impurities into the room, this screen also serves to deflect the in-coming air upward into the mixing chamber 24 above where the germs may be more completely acted upon and destroyed before the air passes through the screen into the room beyond. The screen may be replaced at small cost and the old one destroyed by fire, or otherwise. A screen. door 25, see Fig. 3, is hinged at 26 at its upper edge, the same being provided with a heavy wire mesh for the purpose of protecting the delicate fine screen 22 within. As a convenient means of securing this flue in position in the wall of the building l have formed the frame work 23 carrying the inner screen a little larger than the opening and have secured the same by means of screws 27 to suitable ears in the. walls of the flue.
ln order to control the position of the adjustable shutter from within the room l have provided a rod or wire 28 which is attached at 29 to said shutter whereby it may be moved in or out as desired.
ln operation the air comes in through 'the lower portion of the shutter ll, passes inward through the lower portion of the rotary fan, and through the guide plates 19, 20 and 2l to mix with the fumes from the germicide agent rising from the reservoir 18, the whole is then mixed in the mixing chamber and passes through the screen 22 into the room beyond, the screen serving to prevent the passage of impurities into the room.
My improved Ventilating apparatus may be set in the lower portion of a window or in the outside wall of the room, if desired, and another similar device or exhaust ventilating device of any suitable construction may be located in a reverse position in the upper portion of the same window or in the wall of the room whereby the draft will come in through the lower ventilator and after becoming heated pass out through the upper ventilator.

An air puriiier and Ventilating apparatus comprising a flue casing provided with a mixing chamber, a reservoir for liquid germicide located in said casing germicide located in said casing below said mixing chamber, means for directing the iii- `coming air'over said reservoir, a frame removably secured to the outlet end of said casing, a filter cloth carried by said frame and closing the outlet of said casing, said filter cloth forming a permeable wall for said mixing chamber, and positioned to permit the incoming air to move along the inner surface thereof as well as through the same.
2. An air purifier and Ventilating apparatus comprising a flue casing provided with a mixing chamber, `a reservoir for liquid below said mixing chamber, means for directing the incoming air over said reservoir, said means including a-partition wall within said casing forming one wall of said mixing chamber, a frame removably secured to the outlet end of said casing, and a lter cloth carried by said frame and closing the outlet of said casing, said filter cloth also forming a permeable wall for said mixingY chamber, and positioned to permit the incoming air to move along the inner surface thereof as well as through the same.
3. An air purifier and Ventilating apparatus comprising a flue casing providedwith a mixing chamber, a reservoir for liquid germicide located in said casing, below said mixing chamber, means for directing the incoming air over said reservoir, said means including a depending partition wall withinv said casing provided with aii-angularly disposed detiector and forming side and bottom walls of said mixing chamber', a frame removably secured to the outlet end of said casing, a filter cloth carried by said frame and closing the outlet of said casing, said iilter cloth also forming one side wall of a mixing chamber, and positioned to permit the incoming air to move along the inner surface thereof as well as through the same.
