Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. EATON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dynamo- Electric Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dynamo-electric machines, particularly to machines adapted for the propulsion of electric vehicles, and it has for its object to provide a machine of the character indicated having a high degree of ruggedness and resistance to the shocks incident to the operation of this class of machines.
More particularly, the object of my invention is to provide means for securing 'the housing of a vehicle motor to its frame in such a manner as to strengthen the motor housing and to enable the frame to support a portion of the excessive strains which may result from broken gear teeth or other causes.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a railway motor constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of a portion of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, a motor 1 is mounted upon a shaft 2 supported in bearings in a housing 3 which is secured by means of bolts 4 and 5 to a frame 6.. The frame 6 is provided with a supporting lug 7, a bearing 8 that is adapted to inclose an axle 9 of the vehicle, and a support 10 for a gear case 16. The structure thus far described constitutes a railway motor of a well-known type.
The housing 3 of the motor has a semi cylindrical depression 11 which may conveniently be formed by providing an enlarge- :ment or boss on the housing at the desired point, drilling a circular hole through the boss, and chipping away the upper half thereof. It will be noted that the depression 11 intersects the opening through which the bolt 4 extends. A tie rod 12, provided with a lateral projection 13 corresponding in shape and size to the depression 11 and adapted to be seated therein, is flattened adjacent to the projection 13 and perforated to receive the bolt 4, which, when the parts are assembled in the manner shown in Fig.
2, serves to secure housing 3, the frame 6 and the tie rod 12 rigidly together. The frame 6, adjacent to the bearing 8, is provided with a lug 1a which is perforated to receive the circular outer end of the tie rod 12, and the end of the tie rod is suitably threaded to receive a nut 15.
In the operation of a machine constructed in the foregoing manner, the tie rod 12 serves to transmlt lateral strains that may be set up within the motor housing 3' it includes all such modifications as fall within the-scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A. dynamo-electric machine compris ing a bearing housing having a semicircular seat, a frame adapted to receive said housing, and means extending diametrically from the top of said housing fortransmitting lateral strains from the said frame to the said housing.
2. A dynamo-electric machine comprising a bearing housing, a frame adapted to receive said housing, and a tying member extending diametrically from said housing and attached to the said frame.
3. A dynamo-electric machine comprising a bearing housing, a frame adapted to receive said housing, and a tying member connecting the said frame and housing and provided with a projection received in a seat in the said housing.
4. A dynamo-electric machine comprising a bearing housing, a frame adapted to receive said housing, bolts connecting the said housing to the said frame, and a tying member secured to the said housing by means of one of the said bolts and also attached to the said frame.
