To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS O. (harm, a
citizen of the United States, residing at.
Richmond, in th county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Grinding Tools, of which the following is a specification. 2
My tools for cutting valve seats 1n gas engmes.
The object of my a tool of this character which is adapted to be readily used on the'ordinary gas engine, and in which the valve stem guide of the engine forms a guide for centering the tool in respect to the seat and at the same time iorminga bearing for the lower end of the tool.
Another object of my invention is to provide a tool ofthis character in which the cutting tool 'is provided with two cutting edges and in which either edge can be adjusted to do the cutting and at the same time providing means for rigidly holding the cutting tool in its adjusted position.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and more'efiective tool of this character having certain details of structure hereinafter more fully described.

"Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents an engine cylinderand 2 the valve seat having the web 3 below carrying the opening 4, in which the valve stem moves vertically, all of which is well understood and needs no further description. The head of the cylinder 1 is provided with an enlarged screw-threaded opening 5, closed by a plug, and whereby access may be had to the valve and the same readily removed.
My improved tool consists of a body portion 6 of an elongated cylindrical form and having at its upper end a squared portion 7, adapted to receive a wrench 8, whereby the said body portion-is rotated, as will be hereinafter more fully described. Below the screw-threaded opening 9, the body portion is provided with a smooth opening 10, which intersects a transverse opening 11 adjacent This transverse opening 11 is of a rectangular form in cross-section and into which fits the cutting tool 12.
The cutting tool 12 is of a. rectangular form in cross-section and is of a length considerably greater than the diameter of the body portion 6 of the tool. The cutting tool at each end has cutting edges 13 and 14, which are of different shapes, curves or cutting angles, so that valve seats of different shapes and curves may be more readily ground to conform to the shape of the valve. Loosely fitting within the smooth opening 10 is a bar 15, which is adapted to-en gage the cutting tool 12. Screwed within the opening 9, at the upper end of the tool, is a set screw upon the rod 15 and forces the same downwardly into enga and locks 1t n body portion 6 is its adjusted position, as clearlyshown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Byithisystructure, it will be seen that the tool can be adjusted to cause oneend to en gage the valve seat and be held inits ad justed position.
The lower .end of the body portion 6 is rounded, as indicated at 17, and is provided with an elongated stem portion 18. .which enters the valve stem opening 4, and whereby the tool is rotatably held in itsproper position and centered in respect to the valve seat 2.
The tool, as heretofore described, is rotated by means of a wrench 8, which causes the tool to engage the valveseat and face the same. While I have shown the wrench 8, it will be understood that any other form of instrument can be applied to the squared upper end for rotating the same, and by releasing the set-screw the cutting tool can be adjusted by inserting a screw driver through the opening 5 without removing the tool from the cylinder.
By the use of a bushing, as shown in Fig. 4, the depending stem portion 18 of the tool is held in proper position in cylinders having valve stem openings of a greater diameter.

Having thus desbribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A tool of the character described, comprising a cylindrical body portion having an angular upper reduced end and a transelongated rod carried by the lower end of the body portion.
2. A tool of the character described com prising a body portion, means' for rotating the same, an elongated bearing rod carried by the lower end of the body portion, a cutting tool transversely adjustable through the tool, and means extending through the upper end ofthe body portion for locking the cutting tool in its adjusted position, whereby the tool can be adjusted to its proper pozition after the tool is inserted in the cylin- 3. A tool of the character described, comprising a cylindrical body portion having an angular upper end andca transverse angular opening adjacent its lower end, said body portion having a longitudinal opening ex tending from its upper end and intersecting the transverse opening and having its upper end screw-threaded, a cutting tool in said transverse opening and extending beyond the sides of the body portion, a rod within the longitudinal opening and engaging the cutting tool, a screw 'within the threaded end of the longitudinal opening and engaging the rod and forcing the same into engagement with the cutting tool, an elongated rod carried by the lower end of the body portion, and a removable sleeve on said rod, substantially as shown and described.
