My invention relates to an adjustable reamer grinding clearance gauge designed primarily for the purpose of adjusting the cutting clearance of all types of reamers which are about to be ground on the reamer grinder, but it is to be understood that a gauge, in accordance'with my invention may be employed in any connection for which itis found applicable. V
The essential objects of my invention are to'provide, a gauge of such class capable of maximum accuracy for producing a unlforrn cutting'edge and clearance on tools of the reamer type; for adjusting the desired cutting clearance on straight, spiral, expanding or solid reamers; capable of being employed to adjust the cutting clearance on cylinder boring machine cutting headsand for other reaming and cutting tools; -insur-- ing for accurate adjustment for various sizes of reamers before-or after the reamer is inserted for grinding; to insure proper adjusta ment to prevent damage-to the tool; requir-i ing no skill in making the desired adjust- Y j g V p the passagefl and the portions 7 and 8 of the f i ments; and to attain theseends in a strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efiicient, expeditiously adjusted, conveniently operated, readily installed and inexpensive structure;
To the above ends essentially and others which may hereinafter appear, my invention consistsof such parts and such combination of parts whiclrfall within the scope ofthe invention as claimed.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Figure 8 is a section on line 3-3 Figure 2. I Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 F igure 2.
gauge in Referring to the drawing, 1 denotes a supmeans, not shown." One endof the post 1 has a reduced peripherally threaded extension 2,
The gauge includes a carrier 3, preferably" of polygonal cross section and which is formed fora portion of itslength with a pasbar 12 together.
sage 4 of square outline extending from its outer end 5 to a point between its transverse median and its inner end 6. The carrierB is also formed with a lengthwiseextending opening having'a tapered portion 7 and a portion 8'ofuniform diameter, the former merging into the outer endof passage 4 and the latter extended from end 6 to said tapered portion 7. The carrier 3 in proximity to end 5 is formed with a peripheral socket 9 having'its wall threaded and engaging'with; the latter is the'threaded extension 2for coupling the "carrier 3 and post 1 together. Between the end 5 of carrier 3 and the transverse median of the latter there is provided a transverseopeninglO communicating with passage 4 and having athreaded wall. The
opening 10 preferably isin that side of the carrier opposite the side in which is arranged socket 9. The carrier 3 in'proximity to end 6 is formed with a transverse opening 11 comlnunicating'with portion 8 of the lengthwise opening and having'a threaded wall.
Adjustably mounted in the carrier 3 within part 14 of circular cross section having pe- 8 ripheral' threads; The part-13 has a scale of graduations on one sideyas at 13, extends from end 5 and has its outer end formed with a lengthwise socket 15 having a threaded wall. The part 14 extends from end 6. I y
A r'eamerhead 16 has a reduced rearward- 1y extending peripherally threaded 'exten sion- 17-which'threadedly engages with the wall of socket 15for coupling the head and reamer blade 18.
Mounted upon and threadedly engaging with 'part'l l' of bar 12, as well as extending into the carrier from the end6 is an adjust- Eng nut 19 of the sleeve type. The nut com- 95 prises an outer part and an inner part 20, 21 respectively, the former being of greater diameter than the latterto provide the nut 19 with an annular peripheral shoulder 22; The
part 21 extendsinto the; carrier 3 and heme 100 i The head 16 "carries-the peripheral groove 23 of V-shape cross section. The shoulder 22 opposes end 6 of carrier 3.
Extending through opening 10, as well as threadedly engaging with the wall and binding against one side of part 13 of bar 12 for locking the latter in adjusted position is a locking screw 24 formed with an enlarged head 25 providing'a finger or thumb grip to facilitate the adjusting of the screw to and from binding or looking position with respect to bar 12. Extending through, as well as threadedly engaging with the wall of opening 11 is a coupling screw 26 having a pointed end 27 permanently seating in groove 23, the latter in connection with the end 27 of screw 26 revolubly couples nut 19 to carrier 3. A lock nut 26 is provided-for screw 26.
Secured within the peripheryv of carrier 3 and extended from the end 5 of the latter is an indicating pointer 28 whiohassociates with the graduations 13 for determining the adjusted position of the gauge bar 12.
In order to make an adjustment of the gauge, the locking screw 24 is loosened by hand, thereby releasing the gauge bar 12, then by revolving the nut 19 in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction the bar 12 will be shifted forward or backward through the carrier 3 to whatever adjustment is desired according to the size of the reamer or tool to be ground. the adjustment being indicated-by the pointer on the scale 13'. After the desired adjustment is reached, the locking screw 24 can be tightened very readily by hand without disturbing the adjustment.
