Ib all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANA D. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable and Foldable lroning- Board Structures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ironing boards of that class susceptible of being folded to occupy but little space when not in use, and my object is to provide an ironing board which can be folded or swung to either side for the accommodation of right or left handed persons, in the event the board 0ccupies a fixed location in or near the corner of a room, an ironing board possessing the last named sirable in small apartments.

With the object named in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

ln the said drawing, l indicates a shallow cabinet fitted in an opening provided 'in a wall 2, of a room, and between and in fixed relation to adjacent studdings 3, of said wall, and said cabinet is preferably provided with a plurality of shelves 4, as shown, the undermost shelf having a central recess 5, in its front edge.

Secured to the bottom of the cabinet vertically below the recess 5, is a base 6, provided with a vertical socket or opening receiving the lower end of an upright pivot rod 7, which rod extendsthrough the recess 5, and a central opening in a rigid cross bar 8, secured to the side walls of the cabinet.

A forked hinge member 9 is screwed on the upper end of `the pivot rod and is provided with a bearing hub 10, journaled in the said opening of the cross bar 8, and

characteristic being very de-4 engaging the upper end of said rod and the upper side of said cross bar is a clamping nut 11. When therod is prevented from turning andthe nut isscrewed down, the former is lifted until arrested by the impingement of the hinge member against the underside of the cross bar, this arrangement providing a frictional stop to prevent accidental rotation ofsaid rod and the ironing board, as will be clearly seen hereafter.

The 'hinge member carries a horizontal pivot rod or pin l2, and pivoted thereonl is a plate hinge 13, secured to one end of an ironing board 14, adapted to be folded to a vertical or inoperative position wit in the cabinet or to occupy a horizontal osition when in service, it being noted that when in the former position itf rests against the Iiront edges of the shelvesabove the'cross A brace 15 to support the board in horizontal or operative position and to lit flatly against the board when folded, is pivoted at its upper end to the board, the pivotal connection shown comprising a pair of angle plates 17, connected by a cross pin 18, on which the brace is mounted. The lower end of the brace is pivoted on a cross pin 19, secured to lugs 20 of a collar 21, fitting rotatably and slidingly on rod 7, to accommodate horizontal swinging and folding and unfolding movements of the board, the collar resting on the base 6, when the board is down, to brace the latter lirmly in such position.

Assuming that an ironing board structure of the character described is located so close to the corner of a room that insuiicient space is left between the board when down, and the adjacent wall, to conveniently accommodate an ironer, the board is swung properly to widen such space and thereby give ample` room for the ironer, it being immaterial in what corner the structure is located as the board can be swung to either side. If the tendency of the board is to swing too freely the nut 11 will be adjusted to check such tendency. ln this connection it will -be understood that the board when swung its fulll distance to either side, bears against the cabinet wall at the opposite side of the board from the ironer, and 1s` thereby prevented from swinging away from the latter. To assist in steadying the board while in use,

notches 22, are provided for its reception, in the opposite edges or the cabinet.

The cabinet is provldeol with a hinged door 23, to close over and hide the board from view and permit the space'in front of the cabinet to be utilized as desired.

From the above description it will be seen that I have produced an ironing board structure embodying the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the object of the invention and which can be manufactured and installed cheaply, and

while I have illustrated. the preferred con-` struction of the invention, it will be apparentv that it can be readily modified without departing from the spirit and scope oft-he appended claims.

I claim: I

l. An ironing board a suitable support, a board connected for vertical and horizontal movements on` said support, a brace hinged to the board to swing vertically therewith, and slidingly and rotatably connected to the support to respectively accommodate the vertical and horizontal movements of the board, and means to secure the board against accidental horizontal movement.

2. An ironingv board structure, comprising a cabinet, a board supported-for projecting out of said cabinet horizontally and for swinging toward either side and abutting the corresponding side wall of the cabinet i and for folding upwardly within the latter,

a brace supported to swing horizontally and hinged to the boardto swlng vertically and horizontally therewith, and means to prevent accidental reverse swinging movement of the board after the same has been. swung Gomes of this patent may be obtained for structure, comprising ve cents each, by addressing the to abutting relation with either side of the cabinet.

3. An ironing board structure,'comprising a base, across bar above the base, a rod extending from the base through said cross bar, a collar sli'dable and rotatable on said rod and adapted to be limited in its down- Ward movement by said base, a hinge member rotatable horizontally on said rod, means for fastening the hinge member to thc cross `to the support for swinging in a vertical plane until Wholly within or projecting out of the cabinet, and a brace hinged to the board and collar and adapted to brace the board in a horizontal position when the collar is at the lower; end of its movement on the said support and to lie flatly against the board when the latter is wholly within the cabinet.
