To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. Soon, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powder-Loading Devices,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for loading powder, more particularly to be used where large quantities of black powder for pakch charge is used in rock quarries and the The objects of my invention are; first, to provide a means for rapidly filling the hole with powder; second, to provide a means of this class which is simple and economical of construction, durable, easily installed and does not readily get out of order; third, to
provide a device of this class in which some of the parts are adjustable for different sized grains of powder; fourth, to provide such a device in which the operating parts are so constructed and the operation so simple that there is little danger of igniting the powder in the loading operation; and fifth, to provide such a device that will pack the powder into the hole, leaving no vacant space.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appendedv claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a sectional View of my device showing some of the parts in elevation and Fig. 2, is a fragmentary elevational view of the sameat right angles to that of Fig. 1, showing a portion broken away and in section showing the adjusting device for feeding difi'erent grades of powder.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views. The cylinder 1, cover 2, gasket 3, bottom 4, l. 5, pipe 6, flexible tube 7, supports 8, pipe 9, L 10', pipe 11 and pipe 12 constitute the principal parts of my powder loading device. The cylinder 1 is preferably metallic and is provided on one end with a beveled surface l upon which is fitted the gasket 3. On this top end is provided a cover 2 which is provided with a beveled portion which fits on said gasket 3 and said cover 2 is secured on the top end of said cylinder 1 by means of cams 1 which are pivotally mounted on lugs 1 on the outer surface of the upper end of the cylinder 1. Screwed into a hole in the side of the cylinder 1 intermediate the ends thereof is the pipe 11 which is provided on its outward extended end with a pipe 12 which connects with a compressed air tank of the conventional type. Mounted on the inner end of this pipe 11 is the L 10 and screwed on to the other member of said L is the pipe 9 which is adapted to extend downwardly in the center of said cylinder to near the bottom 4. This L 10 allows for the movement of the end of the pipe 9 as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing so that the end of the pipe 9 may be placed in different relative positions to the upper end of the L 5 for adjustment for different sized grains of powder.
Into the lower end of the cylinder 1 is screwed the bottom 4 which is provided with a dished upper surface dished toward the center and screwed therein in the center is the L 5. In the other member of the L 5 is secured the pipe 6 and to this pipe 6 is attached the flexible tube 7 by means of the coupling 7 This tube is of the proper size and length to fit into the hole made by a drill preparatory to loading and is slightly smaller in diameter so as to allow the air which carries the powder down into the hole to pass out slowly around said tube.
In loading the powder, the receptacle formed by the cylinder 1 and the bottom 4, is filled with powder then the cover 2 is placed thereon cand clamped in position by means of the cams 1". The pipe 9 is moved to the proper position relatively to the hole in the elbow 5 in accordance with the size of the grain of powder used. For instance, if the powder is very coarse and dry, the pipe 9 is positioned directly over the center of the hole, and if the powder is finer and damp, it is moved to one side of the center in accordance with the decrease in size and dryness to cause the air from the pipe to strike on the bottom and circulate against the powder at the bottom loosening it if packed and causing it to enter the hole in the elbow 5 in proper quantities so that the air blast will carry it through, and the air is then turned on through the pipe 12, pipe 11, elbow 10 and pipe 9 carrying the powder with it down through the L 5, pipe 6 and tube 7 to the hole where it is desired to deposit the same, the air passing out around the tube 7 leaving the powder in the hole.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts, I do not Wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangementbut desire to include in the purview of my invention, the construction, COlTlblIliltlOIl and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r 1. In a device for loading explosive powder the combination of a powder receptacle provided with an aperture therein, an air inlet pipe adapted to connect with a compressed air tank and extending inwardly through the wall of said receptacle, its extended end extending to near said aperture in said receptacle and adapted to be moved to different positions relatively to said aperture for adjustment for difierent sized grains of powder and means for conducting the powder from said aperture to the pocket in which it is to be deposited.
2. In a device for loading explosive powder the combination of a powder receptacle provided with a dish shaped bottom with an aperture centrally therein, an air inlet pipe adapted to connect with a compressed air tank and extending inwardly through the wall of said receptacle, another pipe pivotally mounted thereon with its lower end extending to near the bottom of said receptacle directly over said aperture and adapted to be moved upon its pivotal mounting for" adjustment for different sized grains of powder, an elbow with one end in said aperture, a pipe secured in the other end of said elbow and a flexible tube connected to the extended end of said pipe adapted to fit loosely in a hole extending to the pocket in which the powder is to be deposited.
