To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM CURRY, a subject of the King of England, residing at Port Morien, in the Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label- Holders for Railway-Cars, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to means for supporting labels, and particularly to a device for supporting a label upon railway cars, as for instance, coal cars, the label indicating the contents of the car or carrying othe memoranda relating thereto.

The ordinary label holder in use on cars does not prevent the label from being blown out of the holder and lost, nor does it fully protect the label holder from rain or dirt.

The object of this invention is to provide a label holder which includes a lid which may be turned down over the open upper end of the holder and which is latched in place thus preventing the blowing out of the label and the inlet of rain or dust into the interior of the holder.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of myvim-v proved label holder; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.

Referring to these figures, 2 designates a base plate which is adapted to be attached to the side of a car in any suitable manner and carries upon it a label holder which is designated generally 8. This holder comprises a metallic casing or frame, the front plate 4 of which is cut out as at 5. The lower margin of this plate is inwardly bent as at 6 and then downwardly extended as at 7 to form a flange forattachment to the base plate 2. The side margins of the front plate are rebent upon themselves, as at 8, so as to be disposed close to the front plate. 4 and then again rebent and laterally extended, as at 9, to form an attaching flange at each end of the holder. Thus guides are provided for the reception of the card or label 10. The card or label guides formed between the rebent portions 8 and the front plate 4: are relatively narrow and the metal forming the walls of the guides will therefore snugly engage with the card or label 10 which is inserted in said guides.

In order to close the open upper end of the holder I provide a lid 11 having a length equal to or greater than the length of the holder, the middle portion of the rear edge of this lid being formed with a bead 12 embracing a fixed pintle 18 formed by wire whose ends are angularly bent and driven down into the upper edge of the base plate 2. For the purpose of holding this lid in its closed position upon the holder, I provide the latches 14. Each latch consists of a small metallic plate pivoted to the upper face of the base plate 2 and adapted to be turned over the projecting ends of the lid 11 when the lid is in its lower position.

It will be seen that with this construction the labeled card 10 is supported within the holder and is prevented from accidental detachment thereon. The latches 14 have resilient engagement with the lid so that they will hold the lid firmly closed. This lid also covers the upper open end of the holder and prevents rain or cinders from entering directly into the holder.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A label holder for car labels comprising a label casing having a display opening upon its face and being open at its upper end, a base plate upon which the casing is mounted, the casing having its upper edge adjacent the upper edge of the base plate, a pintle having itsends downwardly bent and forced into the upper edge of the base plate, and a lid for the casing having a bead inclosing said pintle.
