LEE S. CHAD'WICK, 015 EAST CLEVELAND, *OHTO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CLEVELAND FOUN- JURY COMPANY, 01E CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
LIF'IING DEVICE FOR COMBUSTION-TUBES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, LEE S. GHAnw1cK,,a
citizen of the United States, residing at East lltll Cleveland, in the county of'Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lifting Devices for-(lombustion-Tubes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates generally to oil or vapor burners and more particularly to the means for raisin and lowering the combustion or comming ing tubes employed in connection with the wick or burner proper.
Une object ofthe invention is to provide a simple and efiicient m ans whereby the combustion or commingling tubes can be quickly and easily raised and supported away from the wick, so that the burner can be lighted.
Another object of the invention is to pro-.
vide means for properly positioning the combustion. tubes upon the wick tube after the burner has been li hted.
A still further 0 j ect of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient means for raising and lowering the combustion or commingling tubes which can be used in connection with any type of wick stop without interfering in the least with said stop.
With these and certain objects in view, the
invention consists in thenovel features of .construction and combination hereln after fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Inthe drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a central vertical section through an oil burner provided with my improved means for raising and lower ing the combustion, or commingling tubes, said tubes being shown in their lowered or normal position; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the tubes raised to permit the lighting 'of the wick; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view illustrating the locking means. In carrying out my invention I provide a wick'holder 10 comprising the inner and outer Wick tubes whlch are united at their lower ends as usual, and near their upper ends are constructed with the inner and outer annular ledges 11 and 12, respectively,
. upon which rest the inner and outer combus Speciflca'tionof Letters Patent.
rying a central thimble 19 which is boredv centrally to receive the upper end of the lifter rod 20, said rod extending downwardly through the ring-like wick stop 21, and through an elongated slot 22, produced in a strap 23 arranged within the inner Wick tube near the lower end thereof, one end of said strap being secured to the inner wick tube as shown, while the other end of said strap is projected downwardly below the lower end of wick tube as shown at 2-1. This downwardly projecting. end may be somewhat broader than the strap, and is longitudinally slotted from the end of wick tube. downwardly as shown at 25, the upper end of the slot having the lateral notches 26, which are adapted to receive theribs or fins 27, swaged upon the outwardly projecting portion 28 of the lifter rod 20, said rod, after passing through the slot 22 being bent at 29 to accommodate the oil pipe, (not shown) and is then bent at 30 so as to project the free end thereof through the slot 25, the extreme end of the lifter rod being curved as indicated to provide a suitable handle. By means of this rod constructed as herein shown and described and connected to the commingling or combustion tubes by the central thimble and perforated diaphragm, I am able to raise and lower the commingling or combustion tubes at will, by simply raising and lowering the lifting rod, and it Will be noted that when the rod is grasped at its lower end, and lifted for the purpose of raising the commingling or combustion tubes clear of the burner, the said tubes will tilt slightly to one side as shown, inasmuch as the lifting rod is permitted to rock rearwardly on account of the slot 22 in the strap 23, and this tilting motion of the commin lin tubes rovides a reater s ace at b O Patented J an. 116, 191V.

or uppermost position, maintaining the commfngling or combustion tubes elevated until the lighting operation has been accomplished. Then by pushing the handle inwardly to disengage the finsor ribs, the rod 20 can be lowered and these'fins or ribs engaging the rear face of the depending ortion 24 insures the commingling or com ustion tubes to be properly seated upon the supporting ledges of the wick tubes.
It will be understood that the wick stop can be of any desired construction and it can be omitted entirely as the tube raising means here shown is entirely independent of any wick stop construction.
It will thus be seen that I provide a cheap, simple and eflicient means for raising, lowering and positioning the combustion tubes with reference to the burner.
Having thus described -my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a burner and combustion tubes, of a lifting rod connected at its upper end with said tubes, said rod having a vertical and lateral tilting movement, and means attached to said burner for supporting said rod in its raised and shifted position. i
2. The combination. with a burner and combustion tubes, of a lifting rod connected at its upper end with said tubes, a guide for said rod within said burner, said guide being slotted to permit a limited lateral movement of said rod and means attached to said burner for supporting said rod in its raised and shifted position.
3. The combination with a burner and combustion tubes, of a lifting rod connected at its upper end with said tubes, said rod having a vertical and lateral tilting movement, the lower end of said rod being projected outwardly beyond the burner, and means attached to said burner for guiding the vertical and outwardly-projected porrod, said rod having a vertical and laterally tilting movement, the outwardly projecting portion of said rod and that portion of the guiding means cooperating therewith being shaped to hold said rod in its elevated and tilted position.
5. The combination with a burner and combustion tubes, of a perforated diaphragm attached to the inner combustion tube, a thimble carried by said diaphragm, anda lifting rod extending upwardly through the burner and having its upper end fitted in said thimble, a slotted guide carried by said burner whereby said rod has a vertical and lateral movement and means carried by the burner for locking the lower end of said lifting rod in its raised and shifted position.
6. The combination with a burner and combustion tubes, of a rod having its upper end connected with said tubes, the lower end of said rod being projected outwardly beyond the burner, and a guide attached to said burner and adapted to guide the vertical and outwardly projected portions of said rod, the outwardly projected portion of 'said rod being provided with means for engaging a portion of said guide whereby the rod is caused to travel vertically until it reaches the limit of its elevation.
7. The combination with a burner and combustion tubes, of a guide attached to said burner and comprising a horizontal and a vertical ,portion, said portions being slotted, the upper portion of the vertical slot being enlarged, and a lifting rod comprising a vertical and a horizontal portion, the upper end of the vertical portion being connected with the combustion tubes, the horizontal portion having enlargements adapted to engage the vertical guiding portion as set forth.
8. The combination with a burner and combustion tubes, of a rod comprising a vertical and a horizontal portion, the upper end of the vertical portion being connected with the combustion tubes, a guide attached to the burner, said guide comprising a horizontal portion and a depending vertical portion, the horizontal portion having a centrally elongated slot, the vertical depending portion being slotted longitudinally, the upper portion of said slot being enlarged, the horizontal portion of said lifting rod being enlarged and adapted to engage the depending slotted portion of the guide as set forth.
9. The combination, with a burner and lifting member, of a lifting rod connecting at its upper end with said lifting member, said rod having a vertical and lateral movement and means operatively controlled by said lateral movement of said lifting rod for holding said lifting member in the raised position.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature.
