IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS..

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,285, dated November 28, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM S. HERB, of Bainbridge, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved mode of constructing Steam Nash-Boilers. The following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.

This invention relates to that class of steam wash boilers provided with a portable-bottom and tubes, usually on the sides, or provided with projections from an open top by various devices. The novelty consists in providing a convex bottom, raised on feet above the boiling water in the vessel, and having a central spout only, and closed firmly on the top with perforations all around said spout, which need only reach to the top of the articles to be washed. The object is to have the tached inside so that it may be trimmed to fit any boiler. These feet are sufficiently high to raise the bottom centrally above the water.

The clothes are laid loosely around the spout and cover the holes in the portable bottom and on the sides. Much space is gained in the use ofa single tube, which only needs to reach to the top of the clothes. The ordinary lid being put on the boiler, steam is generated and forced out of the tube through the side openings and condensed among the clothes, and drains down to be again vaporized and expelled in like manner.

The process differs in applying the steam laterally from the spout among the goods instead of applying it from side strainers or other devices on the top of the spout, so as to bring the steam in contact with the upper surface only ofthe goods to be washed.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In steam wash-boilers, a single central tube, A, when permanently closed 011 the top, and provided with perforations around its circumference from below upwards, said tube affixed to a portable bottom, B, which is centrally convex, and provided with a flat projecting rim, 0, the whole supported on feet D, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
