Specification of Letters Patent.
1 atented Jan. 16, 1917.
Application led May 23, 1916. Serial No. 99,352.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, RUrUs A. PARENT, a citizen of the United Statesl of America, residing at South Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Chair-Braces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to chair braces and has for its object the production of a simple and ellicient means for connecting the four legs of a chair so as to prevent the legs from spreading outwardly under undue strain.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and eflicient means for facilitating the tightening of the braces or the adjustment thereof to take up any slack therein in order that the outward spreading of the legs of a chair may be averted.
Vith these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter moi'e fully described and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view f a chair, the bottom and forward legs thereof being shown in section for facilitating the illustration of the bracing mechanism. Fig. 2 is a central transverse section through the chair legs. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3, of Fig. 2. perspective of the central connecting meinber. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the upper suspending member. Fig. 6 is an enlarged transverse section through one of the legs showing the guiding bracket or plate for engaging the bracing wires and holding the same around the leg of a chair. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective of one of the guiding plates illustrated in Fig. 6. Fig. S is a detail perspective of one of the hanger plates carried by the seat of the chair. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective of a modified form of the wire brace guiding plates which may be substituted for the structure shown in Fig. 7 if so desired.
Referring to the drawing it will be seen that 1 designates the seat of the chair which is provided with suitable legs 2. A plurality of hanger plates 3 are secured to the seat 1 by having their overhanging ends 4 Fig. t is a detail inverted fastened to the top of the seat 1 by means of the pins 5 as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Flach hanger plate 3 is provided with an inwardly projecting hanger end 6, which hanger end 6 is provided with an elongated aperture 7, through which aperture 7 passes a loop of the hanger wire 8. One of these plates 3 is carried by each side of the bottom 1 of the chair as illustrated in Fig. 1, and the hanger wire 8 is passed through the apertures 9 formed in the upwardly extending flanges 10 of the hanger plate 11. The free ends of the hanger wire 8 are then twisted together as indicated by the numeral 12 in Fig. 1 to constitute an eilicient securing means for the hanger wire 8.
A hanger bolt 13 passes through the centrally located aperture 1l in the hanger plate 11, and this hanger bolt 13 is provided with a thumb nut 15 threaded upon the lower end thereof as illustrated clearly in Fig. 3, whichnut 15 engages al washer 1G as illustrated in Fig. 3. rl`he hanger bolt 13 passes through a central connecting plate 17, and this central connecting plate 17 isprovided with a plurality of depending flanges 18 having apertures 19 formed therein, through which apertures 19 pass the diverging bracing wires 20. The free ends` of the bracing wires 20 are secured together as indicated by the numeral 21 in Fig. 2. The diverging portions 20 of the bracing wire are wound around the legs 2 of the chair to constitute a loop 22 as illustrated clearly in Fig. 6, and this loop 22'also passes through the rolled portion 23 of the guiding plate 24. The guiding plate 24 is provided with a depending flange 25 having an aperture 26 formed therein, and the parallel strands of the bracing wire 20 pass through this aperture 26 as illustrated clearly in Fig. 6 of the drawing, thereby holding the strands of the bracing wire 20 in substantially parallel relation with respect to each other. It should be understood that the bracing wire 20 is passed around each leg in a similar manner to that illustrated in Fig. 6. It should be understood that the central connecting or junction plate 17 may be adjusted vertically upon the hanger bolt 13 by screwing the thumb nut 15 upwardly upon the bolt 13, thereby tightening the bracing wires 20 and tending to draw the lower ends of the legs 2 inwardly and in this manner it will be seen that the legs 2 may at all times be kept eiiiciently braced by means of the bracing cable 20.
In Fig. 9 there is shown an embodiment or modified form of the guiding plate 2a, wherein the guiding plate comprises a body 27 having a rolled portion 28 through which the loop 22 of the wire is adapted to pass, and this body portion 27 is provided with upwardly turned ears 29, under which ears are adapted to pass the parallel strands of the wires 20 as will be obvious by considering Figs. l and G of the drawing.
It should be understood that the present device may be very cheaply manufactured, and that any part thereof may be readily replaced when so desired, and it should be further understood that the device may be applied to any suitable or desired chair without materially changing the construction thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is:-
l. In combination with a chair provided with a bottom, a plurality of hanger plates, a hanger wire connected to said hanger plates, a junction plate, a bracing wire, said junction plate provided with a plurality of depending flanges, each flange provided with an aperture formed therein, said bracing wire provided with a plurality of diver-ging strands, the strands of said wire passing through said apertures, guiding plates mounted upon the diverging ends of said strands, said strands being wound around the legs of said chair to constitute a loop, each guiding plate provided with a rolled Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the portion engaging said loop, and each guiding plate provided with means straddling said strands for holding the diverging strands against accidental displacement from the legs of said chair.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a chair brace comprising a hanger member, a junction plate, a bracing wire adapted to be secured to the legs of a chair, said bracing wire comprising a plurality of pairs of diverging strands, each pair of diverging strands terminating in a loop at the outer end thereof for fitting around the leg of a chair, a guiding plate provided with a rolled portion engaging said loop, each guiding plate provided with a depending iange having an aperture formed therein, and said strands passing through said aperture for holding the strands of each pair in substantial parallel relation. Y
3. As a new article of manufacture, a chair brace comprising a hanger member, a junction plate, abracing wire carried by said junction plate and provided with a plurality of pairs of diverging strands, each pair of strands provided with a loop adapted to engage the legs of a chair, a guiding plate carried by each pair of strands and provided with a rolled portion engaging said loop, and each guiding plate also provided with a plurality of folded ears for constituting guiding means for holding the strands 0f each pair in a substantial parallel relation with respect to each other.
In testimony whereof I hereunto signature.
