v SPARK PLUG. APPLICATlON FILED APR.!6,1915- 13125149. Patented Jan.16,1917.
CYRUS L. BUNDY, OF EAST ORANGE,
NEW JERSEY, A BOHLEBER, OF NEW' 30.1? 1*.
SPARK-PLUG.
Application filed April 16,
To all w/wm [15 may concern:
lle it known that l. (lYinis' L. Bunny, a eitizen ot' the United States, residing at East Orange, in the eountv of Essex and State of New ltl'. t have invented certain new and useful Improvements in k-lparle Plugs, of \vhieh the following a full, clear, and exact desel'iption.
The invention which eonstitutes the subject matter ol this a iiplieation relates to a spark plug which is provided with means whereby the eore (an be quiekl} removed "from the surrounding bushing for eleaning the eleetrmles. and tor-other purposes, without neressarilv unserewing the bushing from the engine. V
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view f a full-sized plug showing the bayonet slot (-onneetion; Fig. dis a ventral longitudinal section of the plug; Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. l is a seetion on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail the reference numeral 10 designates a bushing of a spark plug provided with the usual serewthreaded lower end, and also provided with a bayonet slot 11. The character 12 designates the core, made ol porcelain or other suitable material, and provided with suitable electrodes 13 and ll. At an intermediate portion the eore is provided with a shoulder 15 which rests upon a e0rresponding shoulder 1(3 of the bushing 10. The core is provided with a sleeve 17 which is lixed against longitudinal movement means of the shoulder 15 and a ring 16 o" spring metal snapped into an annular groove eneireling said core. The sleeve 17 however is fitted to l-i'eely rotate about the eore. Preferably serewthreaded to the sleeve 17 is another sleeve 19 provided with laterally extending lugs 20 \vhieh are adapted to enter the bayonet slots 11 and when suitably turned are adapted to pass below and engage under the ears 2i ol the bushing the size and loeation of said ears being preterably as illustrated. The upper end of the sleeve 17 is provided with a handle or other equivalent means for assembling and separating the core from the bushing.
The operation of the deviee is as l-ollows: Alter the sleeve 17 has been properly posi tioned about the (tore and the sleeve 15) fitted thereon, as illustrated in Fig. 2. the lower end of the said sleeve 17 is sh0ul Specification of Letters Patent.

lion, hasa limited vertical movement the on-liinited in the lower direction bv the flange 23 and limited in its upward inovement by the handle 22. At will a be seen that the eore 12 is adapted both electrodes and also the slee' 19. As a result tl seetions viz.. the latter of whieh means. In. assembling caused to enter the ba 'on given a turn to the r L lugs 20 to pass under the sleeve 19 being new reventei movement relative to the continued rotation of :leev the lower end of the same shoulder 15 and foree the same snn the shoulder 18 of the bushing. I
When it is desired to remove reverse n'iovenient is imparted to the her 22. The parts should be so de that a slight continued movement sleeve will cause a 1 t ere '1 this the shoulder or enlarged serev read 23 to engage with the sleeve 19 and positively 3:} cause the latter to rotate and has h the lugs "20 from under the ears 21. is pret'erabl a jam ei'igagement betwer threads on the respeetive sleeves so when the parts are "gain assembled he will be a suli ieient t' 'etional engagement eaase the lugs 20 to pass under the e and poperlv engage in the rear It is obvious that various changes in points of detail and other inoditieatioi be resorted to without neeessarily do g from the true spirit and seope of I11 invention. l therefore do not limit 121$ to the speeiiie eonstruetimi shown and described.
What I elaim is:
1. In a sparh plig, a bushing provided with a bayonet slot in the upper portion thereof, a role; and means for seeuring the g eeore within the bushing comprising relatively movable sleeves surrouiu said eore and serewibreaded to eaeh other. one of whieh is provided with lugs: adapted to engage the bushing within the bayonet slot andthe other of which engages with the corefor eil'ecting a movement of the same relative to the bushing.
Y bushing.
2., In a spark plug, a bushing provided with a bayonet s 0t in the upper portion thereof, a core, and means fixed to said core for securing the latter to thebushing comprising relatively movable sleeves one of which is provided with lugs adapted to engage the bayonet slot and the other of which is provided With a handle by which it is movable longitudinally with respect thereto.
3. In a spark plug, a bushing provided with a bayonet slot in the upper portion thereof, a core, and means fixed to said core for securing the latter to the bushing, comprising sleeves, the first of which is rotatable about but fixed against longitudinal movement on the core, and the second of which is screwthreaded to the first and provided with lugs adapted to engage the bayonet slot, and means on the first sleeve for rotating both of the sleeves to secure the core to and remove the same from the 4. In a spark plug, a bushing provided with a bayonetslot adjacent the upper end thereof and a shoulder at an intermediate inmate portion, a removable core for said bushing provided With a shoulder adapted to rest upon the shoulder of the bushing, and means carried by said core adapted to secure the same to the bushing comprising a member adapted to engage the bayonet slot and a rotatable member normally resting upon the shoulder of the core and cooperating with the aforesaid member to force the core downwardly into fluid tight engagement with the shoulder of the bushing.
5. In a spark plug, a bushing provided with a bayonet slot adjacent the upper end thereof and an annular shoulder at an intermediate point, a removable core for said bushing provided with a shoulder normally resting upon the shoulder of the bushing, and means carried by said core for securing the same to said bushing comprising a member engaging said slots and. a second member engaging the first named member and movable longitudinally with respect thereto.
In testimony whereof I al'iix my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses;
