ILLUMINATING APPLIANCE.

, Be it known that I, EARL C..Mcl{ixx1n, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the countj,7 of Cook and State l of Illinois, have invented certain new and ries of reflectors adapted to reflect the rays y of light from the main lamps .in an upwardly and outwardly direction. and a mem-y ber which is adapted to transmit with more or less diffusion, vrays of lightfrom one .or more auxiliary lamps of low wattage, through the translucent wallsot1 the member, while il uminating said member.
A further object of my invention is lto provide a translucent bowl so arranged in respect to the other elements otr the fixture, as to conceal from observation from below, the interior fittings while permitting free access to the latter and to the bowl for cleaning and repairing purposes.
A still further object of my improvements is to provide a fixture of simple and economical construction that will properly support the translucent member without producing shadows within it which would detract from its ornamental appearance and decorative effects.
Having the aforegoing and other objects of general utility in view.- I have produced the lighting fixture illustrated in preferred and modified forms in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan or interior View showing one halt ot a fixture constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a View partly in elevation, and partly in section showing a preferred adaptation of my in- Vention; Fig. 3 is a plan view of an interior lamp-supporting fitting especially adapted for use in my fixture, and Fig. 4 is a View partly in elevation and partly in section,

Referring to the details of the drawing,

To support the lightingunitoriinteriorA fitting, composed of the lbox S, branch pipes S, lamps 9 and reflectors 10, in proper re- -lation to the bowl 5, I provide radially arranged metal varms 11, the inner ends of lwhich are secured at 'lla to the under side of the box 8 and the outer ends 1lb hook over a ring 12 which is welded or soldered to the shoulder 6b of the rim 6.
Depending from the center of the bottom of the box 8, is a lamp 9a of low wattage, the Afunction of which is to illuminate the bowl 5, the outwardly Haring perimeter of which rests upon and is supported bythe edge ot the` annular tiange 6a. Instead of using but one. low wattage lamp to illuminate the bowl 5, I may adapt the style of interior fitting shown in Fig. 3, in which four such lamps, as D", are secured to the outer ends of radial pipes 8", which alternate the pipes 8a which carry the main illuminating lamps 9. This form is desirable whereit is desired to effect a high illumination of the bowl 5, and secure a general illumination from the diffused rays transmitted thereby.
In Fig. 4, the interior fitting corresponds with that shown in Fig. 2, except that a suspension'member consisting` of a stem 16 having fork-shaped upwardly extending arms 16b is secured to the socket of the lamp 9 as.
at 16, and 'the lower portion of the stem is threaded as at 16 and provided-with an 0rnamental nait 1'2" The threaded portion 162L of the 'stem passes through a hole 13a in the bottoni of the bowl4 13, and the nut'l/a" is screwed up until it engages the under -side of the bowl, thus concealing the hole' 13a.
By properly adjusting the nut 17,'the pe- Y ripheral edge of the bowl 13 will ybe* forcedv up against the horizontal flange 14a of the rim 111, thus elect'ing a close jointhbetween the latter and the bowl. y
To remove'the 'bowl for cleaning, it is only necessary to unscrew the nut 17. They chains 15 and hoolrs'la correspond with the similar members 7, 7a, shown in Fig. 2.- "It'f vwardly-extending flange at its 'flower peripherall edge; ajtranslucentbowl supported from said. fla-nge; and a vlighting unit arranged nteriorly of said rim and bowl and embodying a central junction box, lights connected thereto, and' radial box-supporting arms having their inner ends detachably connected to the under side of said boX and their outer ends detachably connected with saidliange.
2. An illuminatingappliance -comprising-l,
an annular rim having a continuous .1nwardly-eXtendmg flange at its lower peripheral edge; a ring secured concentrically to said flange; a translucent bowlv supported from said flange; and a llighting unit arranged interiorly of said vrim and bowl and embodying a cent-ral junction box, lights connected thereto and radial boX supporting arms having their inner ends detachably connected lto the under side of said box and their outer ends provided with hooks which are detachably engaged with said ring.
3.` An illuminating appliance comprising, an annular rim having a Acontinuous inwardly-extending flange at itslower peripl1- eral edge; a translucent bowl supported from said flange; and a lightmg unit arf'` ranged 'interiorly of said rim and bowl and embodying a central junction boX, a plurality of horizontal lights and a depending light connected to said box, radial box supporting arms detachably connected at their inner ends tov the'under side of said box and at their outer ends tosaid flange, and a de pending supporting element wherein the depending light is arranged detachably oonnected at its upper end to said box and at its lower end to the bottom of said' bowl:
