To all whom z't may concern Be it known that I, Jnssn STUART BATES, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp- Aiixer-Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.y

My present invention has for its object to provide a cabinet or receptacle adapted to be employed with machines used for alixing stamps or labels in which the latter are mounted in a removable container or compartment, whereby the container may be held and locked to prevent access to the stamps when the container is removed from the aifixer.

A further object of the invention is to provide a cabinet with a plurality of stalls or compartments, one for containing the aiiixing machine itself and the others providing places for the retention of a plurality of stamp containers for use with a single aiiixer which may be supplied with stamps of di'erent denominations.

To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

My present invention is adapted to be used with a stamp afiixer or label applying 'mechanism such as that shown in Patent No. 1,012,021. granted to W. F. Schweiger and B. D. Straight, dated December 19,

1911. The type of apparatus shown in said patent is one consisting of the main frame or casing A. provided with an afixing mechanism operated by the reciprocatory movement 0f the shaft A fitted with the operating knob A2 and the detachable or demountable stamp case B containing the roll or cartridge of stamps or labels Z1', and from which they are fed 'by suitable mechanism through a guideway extending downwardly from theJ receptacle and -inclosed within a depending hollow leg portion b2 attached t0 the container. The latter part is adapted to fit within the frame of the casing of the machine A and-in addition to the stamp guideway it also contains the counter or register `b3, by which accurate count is obtained of the number of stamps discharged from the machine, and the key lock c having a spring bolt c which engages in a suitable recess or depression formed in the base a3 of the aiiixer. In addition to the lock just described, the stamp receptacle or container is secured to the frame of the machine by hook-shaped projections 513 which coperate with a shoulder or abutment a* on the exterior of the top of the casing A, as shown in Fig. 2. In a machine of this character the responsibility for the disposal or use of the stamps is vested in a single party who is provided with a key to the lock c and the supplying of stamps to the container B can only be accomplished by the holder of the key, while the removability of the stamps, or the disposing of them, is possible'only by the reciprocation of the afiixing mechanism and their consequent registration by the counter ,63.

In order to obviate the necessity of employing a separate complete machine for each denomination of Stamps which may be used in one office or mail room, I adopted the idea of employing or supplying with a single atiixer a plurality of interchangeable containers supplied with rolls of stamps of different denominations. 'Io prevent the unauthorized removal of the stamps from such containers when they are detached from the machine, I have provided a suitable cabinet in which they may be locked, said cabinet being divided into compartments or stalls forming the counterpart of the open side of the afixing machine and into which said containers fit the same as they do when applied to a machine Where they are locked against removal until the key is inserted in the lock.

The cabinet preferably comprises a base or bottom d and a series of outwardly extending partitions e across the rear sides of which extends the backing f and having at the top the covering piece f having on the under side the lugs or projections f2 with which the hook members 7213 on the container are adapted to engage. The base d, it will be observed, is provided with recesses d arranged between the partitions and adapted to accommodate the bolts c of the locks when the containers are itted therein, as shown in Fig. 3. At one end of the cabinet 1 provide an enlarged compartment g in which the whole machine may be inserted when not in use and retained against removal by a door or gate g fitted with a suitable lock g2 which is preferably capable of operation by the same key as are the other locks c of the various stamp containers. The lifting of the aiiixing machine bodily out of its compartment g may be prevented in -a variety of ways, but as the type of machine shown is provided with the base a3 having laterally projecting edges suitable guides g3 are shown extending over the edges of the base and permitting the machine to be inserted and removed only when the door g is opened. In a stamp aflixing machine comprising the vertical reciprocatory parts which are actuated by a shaft such as that indicated by A, it is also desirable to prevent the operation vof the latter when the machine is placed in the cabinet, and to this end I provide at one side of the machine a laterally projecting rod or pin a4 attached to the shaft A', or some part of the mechanism controlled thereby which, when the machine is placed in the cabinet, projects over an upwardly extending lug or finger g4 on one 0f the partition walls of the cabinet, as shown in Fig. l.

A cabinet embodying my present invention possesses the advantage that it increases the facility with which a single stamping machine may be employed for distributing or alixing stamps of different denominations, and it is also desirable in that it provides further means by which the record of the stamps, appearing on the registers of the different sta-mp containers, may be relied upon as accurate,'thus protecting the owner of a machine against unauthorized removal of the stamps and affording the user, or person intrusted with the authority of holding the key, assurance that the only stamps removed are those which are ejected by the mechanism which feeds and aiixes the stamps to the articles to which they are to be applied.
