HENRY A. HART, OF FLUSI-IING, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE STROBEL & WILKEN COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OI-IIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
TOY FIGURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16,1917.
Application filed September 22, 1916. SeriaLNo. 121,546.
. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Figures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toy figure of novel construction to which an odd shuifiing side step may be imparted by means of a string manipulated in a direction opposite to the path of the figure. The construction is further such that while thus advancing sidewise, the body of the figure will perform a peculiar wabbling or contorted 'niotion, thus adding to the amusement derived from the working of the toy.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a front view of a toy figure embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a left hand side view; Fig. 8, a section on line 33 Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, a bottom view of the follower-foot.
The toy figure comprises essentially, a trunk 1, from which depend a pair of diverging resilient legs 2 made preferably of spring blades which are so set that the flat sides of the blades face the sides of the trunk. To the lower ends of legs 2 there are fitted by means of stiff connecting members 3, a pair of shoes 4 and 5. Of these, the shoe 4 of the advancing leg has a flat or even sole, while the shoe 5 of the second or follower leg is provided with a longitudinally extending rib or anchor 6, shown to be made wedgeshaped in cross section. From trunk 1 there extends upwardly a spring blade 7 constitutingan elongated neck which carries a head piece 8, said head piece being provided with a downward extension 9, to which the spring neck is joined. From extension 9 project sidewise a pair of springblades 1O constituting arms, and furnished at their free ends with hands 11. To the top of the head is secured an operating string 12, which with the embodiment shown, is partly composed of a'hair one 13, secured to the head at 14. A fastener 15, arranged sidewise of fastener 14 so directs the one and consequently the string that it extends to that side of the figure which is supported upon the follower foot 5. V 7
In operation, string 12 is subjected to short pulling impulses and intervening slacks.
As the string is being pulled, leg 2 carrying shoe 4 will be raised, while leg. 2 carrying shoe 5 will be bent sidewise so as to increase the reach between the legs, rib 6 meanwhile constituting an anchor that prevents the toy from falling over. Upon a relaxation of the pull, shoe 4 will touch the ground at a distance, from its previous position, while the tension to which leg 2 of shoe 5 had been subjected will cause said leg to straighten out and to thus cause shoe 5 to follow shoe 4. In this way, a peculiar sidewise movement of the figure will take place, while at the same time, spring neck 7 will become alternately arched and straightened out, and spring arms 10 will vibrate or swing so that a comical wabbling action is imparted to the entire figure. The manipulation of the toy requires a certain amount of dexterity, so that the toy is not only amusing but invites the exercise of considerable skill.
It is to be understood that the figure is, in practice to be clothed, and also that while I have shown the invention embodied in a manikin, it may be equally applied to toy figures of other characters.
Iclaim:
1. A toy figure comprising a trunk, spring legs carried thereby, shoes carried by the legs, and an anchoring member. on one of said shoes.
2. A toy figure comprising a trunk, diverging spring legs carried thereby, shoes carried by the legs and an anchoring memberon one of said shoes.
3. A toy figure comprising a trunk, a pair of legs carried thereby, said legs bein formed of spring blades the sides of whic face the sides of the trunk, a pair of shoes carried by the legs and an'anchoring member on one of said shoes. 7
4. A toy figure comprising a trunk, a pair of spring legs carried thereby, a pair of shoes carried by the legs, a spring neck extending upwardly from the trunk, a head piece mounted on the sprin piece. V r 5. A toy figure comprising a trunk, a pair of spring legs carried thereby, a pair of shoes carried by the legs, an anchoring member on one of said shoes, a spring neck extending upwardly from the trunk, a head piece mounted on the spring neck, and a pair of spring arms carried by the head piece.
6. A toy figure comprising a trunk, a pair of spring legs carried thereby, a pair of shoes carried by the spring legs, a resilient neck mounted on the trunk, a head piece mounted on the neck, and an operating string carried by the head piece.
7. A toy figure comprising a trunk, a pair of spring legs carried thereby, a pair of shoes carried by the spring legs, an anchoring member on one of said shoes, a resilient neck mounted on the trunk, a head piece mounted on the neck, and an operating string carried by the head piece.
8. A toy figure comprising a trunk, a pair of spring legs carried thereby, a pair of shoes carried by the spring legs, an anchorin member .on one of said shoes, a resilient nec mounted on the trunk, a head piece mounted on the neck, an operating string carried by the head piece, and a fastener that deflects said string toward the leg having the anchor-carrying shoe.
