Be it .known that we, JOHN A. JoNEs, CLAUDE 0. Rowe, and GLAUsE E. JOHNSON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Palestine, in the county of Anderson and State of Texas, have invented an Improvement in Sanitary Cigarette-Paper Receptacles, of which the following is a, specification.
This invention is an improvement in receptacles, and has particular reference to a case for holding cigarette paper.
' An object of theinvention is to provide a casing for containing a continuous strip of paper and having a hinged cover-therefor to which is pivotally connected a cutting member whereby the paper may be cut to any desired length as the same is withdrawn from the casing.
Another object is the provision of a casing formed from a single sheet of material and consisting of a bottom and a top, which only partially closes the receptacle, said casing having a hinged closure or cover the free end of which, in conjunction with the adjacent edge of the top of the receptacle, forms a slot through which the paper is withdrawn, this slot being normally covered by means of the cutting member pivoted to said hinged closure.
A further object is the provision of a 'receptacleof this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture, and effectivev in carrying out the purpose for The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expres-' sions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the receptacle showing the parts 'in the position to withdraw a strip of paper therefrom. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing parts in the position for severing or cutting off that portion of the strip which has been withdrawn from the/casing. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2., Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section showing the parts in full lines in the same position as in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is also a longitudinal section with the parts of the receptacle in position for the insertion of a new supply of paper into the casing. I,
There is illustrated in theaecompanying drawing what is now deemed a preferred form of the invention in which the rectangular casing 10 is formed from a single sheet of any suitable material and consists of a bottom 11 and top 12, the latter forming only a partial closure for the casing which is open and reduced at one end as indicated at 13. A continuous strip of paper 14 is preferably folded in layers and adapted to be inserted into the space between bottom 11 and top 12 and is withdrawn from the casing in a manner to appear in the course of this description.
At the reduced end of the casing the same has hinged thereto at 15 a closure or cover 16 which is employed for the purpose of closing Adjacent the free end of the cover 16 the same has pivoted thereto at 20 a cutting member 2'1 which, when in cutting position, overlaps the top 12 and forms a closure for the slot 19. When in this position, the cutting member 21 bears against the strip of paper 1 1 -with suliicient force to prevent said paper from slipping as it is being torn off. For the purpose of retaining thls cutting member in the position just described,
the sides of the casing are provided with projections 22 for engaging suitable detents 23 formed. in the inner surfaces of the sides of said cutting member. In order to further insure against the slipping of the paper as the same is being severed, pressure may be brought to bear with the thumb or finger upon said cutting member.
In practice, a supply of paper is first 1nserted into the casing when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 5 after which the closure 16 is moved to closing position and the free end of the strip of paper 14 is passed through the slot 19 whereupon the cutter 21 is moved to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4 whereby .a small portion of said strip will be retained between the top 12 and said cutter. When it is desired to sever a strip of paper, the cutter 21 is first raised to the position shown in Fig. 1 after which the end of the strip of paper may be grasped and any desired length withdrawn from the casing as shown in said figure. The cutting member 21 is then returned to its normal position in engagement with the strip of paper whereupon the latter is torn across the cutting edge of said member. After a length of the paper has been severed there is still left a portion of the strip between the cutting edge. of the member 21 and the slot 19 which portion is adapted to be grasped when it is desired to detach another length of paper.

Areceptacle of the class described comprising a casing including a top for partially closing the same, a closure hinged to onewend of said casing, the free end of said closure terminating short of the adjacent edge of said top to provide a transverse slot, means for normally retaining said closure in closing position, and a cutting member piv oted to sald closure adjacent the free end thereofvand adapted to overlap said slot to form a closure therefor.

A receptacle of the class described comprising a casing having a top, a closure pivoted to said casing, one end of said closure terminating adjacent said top to provide a slot, and a cutting member carried by said closure and normally closing saidslot whereby to retain the end of a strip of paper between said cutting member and said casing.
