To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BRADLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roll Construction for Rolling-Mills, of which the following is a sp'ecification.
This invention relates to rolling mill apparatus, and more particularly to a novel and V useful roll construction possessing special utility in its application to a set of rolls for making a special design of railway tie-plate.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a novel sectional roll construction for the final pass of the mill made up of a number of relatively inexpensive and easily removable and replaceable units. A practical advantage of such a construction is to reduce the expense of breakages to a minimum, and without the expense of the loss of an entireroll, because: the breakage would usually be confined to a single ring'or collar of theroll. i
A further and more specific object of the invention is to provide a sectional roll construction which possesses special utility for the final pass of the series, so. as to effectively meet the difficulty of giving the final shape to the special design of tie-plate referred to with a minimum risk of breakage of roll parts. 7
Theessential features of the invention involved in the sectional formation of the improved roll. construction are susceptible of modification within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention, but for purposes of illustration a' preferred construction and arrangement of parts are shown in the accompanying drawings, in whichi j e Figure 1 is an elevation of a set of rolls of i a rolling mill, including a final pass roll constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig.2 is an enlarged view of the portions of the rolls forming the leader and final passe's which complete the tie plate bar, which is subsequently cut up into tie plate units. 7 Fig. 3 is a plan view and a projected side view of one of the marginal die rings of the roll of thefinishing pass to give final form to one marginal portion of the bar. Fig. 4is a similar View of the correspondlngly opposite marginal die ring for the other marginal portion of the bar. Fig. 5 is a side elevation and projected edge View of the intermediate former ring ofthe finishing roll,-sh0wing the individual die units thereof removably interlocked in the peripheral keeper sockets therefor. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the same ring with the die units thereof removed. Fig. 7 is a detail in perspective of the special design of anti-creeper tie plate which is the rolling mill product made by the present invention.

Sincethe novel roll construction claimed herein is specially designed for the final pass of a'r'rolling mill set to produce the special design of railway tie plate, the latter is shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings and essentially comprises a rectangular plate body 1 provided at the upper side thereof with a fiat rail seating floor 2. At the opposite marginal edgeportionsof its fioor 2, the plate body 1 has formed thereon the raised rib portions 3 and 4.- respectively which extend from one end of the body to the other, and are preferably shaped at the upper and outer sides with the compoundly curved or sigmoidal surfaces 5. These raised rib portions 3 and 4; present at their inner edges the vertically disposed inside rail flange bearing shoulders 6, and at their central portions are'also preferably formed with raised curving andoutwardly and downwardly inclining bearing projections 7 which may be utilized as bearing points or abutments for the under side of screw head spikes, if that type of fastening is used for fastening the tieplate tothetie. further feature of construction in the tie plate is that of one of the ribs 1 having its shouldered edge deflected outwardly into the form of an approximately V-shaped recess 8, whose separate inclined portions are outwardly convergent- Also, in connection with this detail of the tie plate, the flat floor of the body thereof has countersunk therein a clearance recess 9 lying immediately adjacent the edge recess 8 and representing an elimination of metal at a point where it is necessary to provide a product having the functional characteristics required thereof. This special design of tie-plate or metal shape has its inception reference letters A, B, and C.
The structural characteristics of the tie plate are progressively developed in the passesI, II, III and IV in accordance with the .process fully explained in my parent application Serial No. 15,790, filed March 20, 1915, and the final reduction and shaping of the bar blank is effected through the action of the novel final pass roll member, which forms the final pass of the series designated by the reference number V. The said final pass V is provided between roll members, one of which substantially consists of a plain reducing collar X which maintains the flat formation of the base or under side of the blank. The other roll member for this final pass embodies important and practical features of construction because of the difficulty involved in rolling into form the final details of the tie-plate blank. The structural elements of this other roll member for the final pass are plainly shown in Figs. 2 to 6 inclusive of the drawings.
The said roll member essentially includes in its general organization, one or more intermediate plain reducing collars 10 whose peripheries are perfectly fiat and smooth to maintain the flat formation for the floor 2 of the tie-plate blank. In addition thereto the said roll member includes a pair of opposite marginal die-rings l1 and 12 of substantially duplicate construction, though usually being of a different width to adapt them respectively to thedifi'erent widths and slightly differing locations of the opposite raised rib portions 3 and lof the tie-plate blank. Referring more particularly to these marginal die-rings 11 and 12, it is to be noted that the same are formed with compoundly curved or sigmoidal surfaces which give a final reduction and shape to the corresponding surfaces 5 of the said rib portions 3 and 4. Furthermore, the said rings 11 and 12 are provided about their peripheries with a continuous alternation of die recesses 13 and die projections 14 and 15 respectively, so that as the said rings roll upon the marginal edges of the bar blank, the same will not only give final form and size to the ribs 3 and 1, but will also develop and shape the raised bearing projections 7 on the said ribs.
'One of the distinctive features of the invention, with respect to the apparatus is that of the intermediate forming ring 16 which constitutes one of the active elements of the sectional roll member made up of the rings 10*, 10, 11, 12 and 16. The intermediate forming ring is provided in its periphery with a plurality of dove-tailed or equivalent shaped keeper sockets 17 adapted to have interlocked therewith the correspondingly shaped holding tongues 18 forming a part of the individual die units 19 which are carried by the rings. The said forming ring 16 is clamped in place between one of the collars 10 and the marginal die ring 12, thereby being well and strongly backed by the collar 10, which is a necessary feature because of the lateral strain imposed upon the said forming ring in performing its Work in the final pass.
The individual die units 19 are specially designed to perform the double function of shaping the l-shaped edge recess 8 in the rib 4 of the tie-plate blank, and also, the countersunk recess 9 in the floor of the blank. Accordingly, each of said units 19 is provided with a flat outer end having a sufiicient projection beyond the adjacent collar 10 to displace metal from the floor of the blank and produce the said recess 9, and is also provided upon one side thereof with a projecting substantially V-shaped or angular die face 20 which impresses itself into the metal of the inside edge of the rib 4L and displaces the same in directions that will leave the re'e'ntrant approximately V shaped recess 8 which is a required detail of the finished product, so that the latter may perform its anti-creeper functions. In connection with this special design of sectional roll member for the final pass, it will be readily understood from the foregoing that breakages of roll parts are practically limited to the individual die-units 19 which are readily removed and replaced with little expense. At the same time the construction described provides for an economic and practical distribution of metal so, that the required weight and strength of tie-plates may be successfully manufactured.
'From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent without further description, and it will also be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An apparatus for rolling tie plates including a roll having a die provided with alternating recesses and projections, and a former carrying die units lying opposite said recesses.
2. An apparatus for rolling tie plates including a roll having an intermediate reducing collar, a marginal die ring having peripheral recesses, and a former clamped between said ring and die and carrying a series of projecting die llIlItS-' 8. An apparatus for rolling tie plates including a roll having an intermediate reducing collar, a marginal die ring provided with a peripheral serles of recesses, and a former clamped between the collar and the ring and having a plurality of die units lying respectively opposite said recesses.
4. An apparatus for rolling tie plates including a roll having an intermediate re ducing collar, a marginal die ring having a plurality of recesses, and a forming ring clamped between the collar and the marginal ring and carrying a series of outwardly and laterally projecting die units.
5. A11 apparatus for rolling tie plates including a roll having an intermediate reducing collar, a marginal die ring provided with a series of die recesses, and a forming ring clamped between the collar and the marginal ring and carrying a series of outwardly and laterally projecting die units, each of said units lying opposite a recess of the marginal ring.
6. An apparatus for rolling tie plates including a roll having an intermediate collar, marginal die rings at opposite sides of said collar and provided with preipheral recesses, and a forming ring clamped between the collar and one of the marginal rings, said forming ring carrying a series of individual die units projecting beyond its periphery and also laterally to one side of the plane thereof.
7. An apparatus for rolling tie plates including a roll having an intermediate collar, marginal die rings at opposite sides of said collar and provided With peripheral recesses, and a forming ring clamped between the collar and one of the marginal rings, said forming ring carrying a series of individual die units projecting beyond its periphery and also laterally to one side of the plane thereof, each die unit lying opposite a recess in the adjacent marginal ring.
8. A roll for rolling shouldered tie-plates including an intermediate plain reducing collar, opposite marginal die rings provided with a peripheral series of alternating die recesses and die projections, and an intermediate forming ring having. removable individual die units having angular die faces Which face the die recesses in one of the marginal die rings.
9. A roll for rolling shouldered tie-plates including an intermediate plain reducing collar, opposite marginal die rings having a peripheral series of alternating die recesses and die projections, and a separate intermediate forming ring clamped between the reducing collar and one of the marginal die rings and provided with a peripheral series of keeper sockets, and individual die units remo-vably engaged in said sockets, each of said die units having a lateral angular die face lying opposite one of the recesses in one of the die units.
