T. ROBINS.
'lLLuMlNABLE PAD HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAILZI. 1 916.

UNITED STATESv PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS ROBINS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO SUPREM'S MANUFACTURING COMPANY, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y. i
Application filed March 21, 1916.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, THOMAS RoiNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Illulninable Pad-Holders, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings.
The article of manufacture forming the subject of this invention is a portable case for writing pads provided with pad-retaining means and fitted with a flap adapted, when extended, to support a foldable. pad and presenting, when collapsed, a closure for the case, an incandescent electric lamp or lamps for illuminating the surface of the pad, and means accommodated in, and detachably fitted to, said case for supplying electric current to said lamp or lamps.
Hitherto it has been proposed to provide a construction comprising a pocket lamp equipped on one face with a pad, the incandescent bulb being covered with a cowl adapted to direct rays of light on to the sur-` face of the pad. 1t will be appreciated that the pad being situated on the rigid wall outside of the lamp the prior construction does not afford a closure for the pad.
The characteristic feature of the present invention is the provision of a foldable support for the pad, the support acting as a closure for the pad.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan; Fig. 2 an end elevation, and Fig. 3 a section of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 denotes the case, which is preferably of sheet metal; 2 the pad-retaining means preferably constituted by spring clips riveted to the case and forming jaws engageable with one marginal edge of the pad; 3 denotes the flap which is attached to the lower wall of the case by means of a flexible plate 3a capable of assuming a curvature in conformity with the cambered end of the case, such flap, when extended, affording support for the pad and, when collapsed, serving as a closure for the case; 4 denotes a catch for retaining the flap in closed position; 5 denotes a pin fitted to the body of the case l, with which the catch coperates; 6 denotes side catches formed on the flap and serving to guide the flap into closed position; 7 denotes an incandescent Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 85,628.
electric lamp which serves to illuminate the upper surface of the pad; 8 denotes a tube in which said lamp isV housed, the forward portion of said tube being formed as a cowl telescoping on the rearward portion, such cowl acting to confine the rays to the surface of the pad; 9 denotes the source of electric current, which is preferably constituted by a dry cell or battery; 10 denotes a metallic container in which the cell or battery is accommodated so as to be removable therefrom, said container being adapted for convenient attachment to and detachment from the case andbeing fitted with clips 11 acting to maintain the cell or battery in position. The said container also functions as one of the conductors for leading electric current to the lamp and is fitted with a switch 12 for controlling the circuit. It will be appreciated that the tube 8 may perform the function of a handle, facilitating removal of the container 10. Desirably, there is fitted to one side wall of the case a clip 13, for the reception of a pencil or the like.
It will be seen that by reason of the construction shown and described a pad-holding case is provided which answers the objects of the invention as hereinbefore set forth; the resultant advantages will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
It is to be understood that the invention in its broader aspectsis not limited to the precise construction-shown nor to any particular construction by which the invention may be carried into effect, since many changes may be made in the details of the parts without departure from the essence of the actual invention as defined by the appended claims.
I clainiand desire to obtain by Letters Patent the following:
1.A A pocket pad-holder comprising a case provided with a folding flap adapted to support a foldable writing pad in either folded or unfolded position, a battery and electric lamp mounted at the head of the case, and means for holding the flap closed as a cover.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a device for holding writing pads, comprising, in combination, a case provided with padretaining means and having an eXtensible and collapsible flap adapted to support a foldable pad when extended, said flap affording a closure for the case when collapsed, an electric lamp for'illuminating the surface of the pad, and means accommodated in, and detachably tted to said case, for supplying electric current to. said lamp.
3. An illuminable pad-holder comprising a case, a folding ap adapted to support a y foldable Writing pad and foldabler around foldable Writing pad and foldable around the case, an electric lamp for illuminating 15 the pad, and a cell or battery for supplying current to the lamp housed in a' container detachably fitted transversely A across the head of the case.
In testimony lwhereof I have signed this 20 specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
