Description

"muren erases rrr entre EDWARD L. OLDI-IAM, OF DENVER, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR TO THE DENVER ROCK DRILL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DENVER, COLORADO, A CORPORATION OF DELA- WARE.
DRILL-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedJan. 9,1917.
Application filed April 12, 1915. Serial No. 20,829.
To aZZcULom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. OLDI-IAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver' and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drill-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification. v
rlhe present invention relates more particularly to the means for securing the clamping dies to the die holders.
The object of the present invention is to provide an eifective securing means which is not liable to accidental derangement, and which will permitthe ready removal and replacement of the dies whenever desired.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View through portions of a pair of die holders and the dies therein. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a rear elevation. Fig. l is a cross sectional view.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the iigures of the drawings.
It will be understood that the present invention may be employed in connection with any well known drill or analogous sharpening means, and in the accompanying drawings, portions of two relatively movable die holders are shown and are designated 5. These holders have in their opposing faces transversely disposed die seats 6 which are semi-circular in cross section and extend entirely across the holders. Each seat is provided at one end and at one side of the holder with an enlarged recess 7, the wallsv of which are undercut as shown at 8.
Dies, designated generally by the reference numeral 9 are located in the seats, each die consisting of a shank portion 10 that lits in the main portion of the seat, and a head 11 that is fitted in the recess 7, said head having a rear undercut wall 12 that interlocks with the wall 8 of the recess. A cap plate 13 overlaps the opposite side of the die holder to that in which the head 11 is located, and also overlaps the free end of the shank 9. This cap plate is secured to said end of the shank by a headed screw 14 passed therethrough into the shank. rlhe plate is held against turning by a pin 15 carried by and projecting from the adjacent face o f the die holder, said pin detachably engaging in the overlapping portion of the cap plate. With this structure, it will be evident that when the die is in place, it is eifectively held against detachment, inasmuch as the cap plate secures the headfinitsl v interlocking engagement with the die holder.
At the same time by removing the screw 14, the die may be readily detached and removed from the holder.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In apparatus of the character set forth, coacting die holders relatively movable toward and from each other and having 'die seats in their opposing faces, dies in the seats, one of said dies comprising a shank having a head at one end, said die being laterally removable from its seat and said head having an interlocked engagement with the die holders, and means engaging the end of the shank opposite to that having the head to hold the head in said interlocked engagement, said holding means being disposed out of the path of the coacting die.
2. In apparatus of the character set forth, coacting die holders relatively movable toward and from each other and having die seats in their opposing faces, dies in the seats, one of said dies having a head and a shank and laterally removable from said seat, said head having an interlocking engagement with its die holder, and a device secured to the shank and having a detachable bearing against the holder to secure the head in said interlocked engagement, said device being disposed out of the path of the coacting die.
3. In apparatus of the character set forth, a die holder having a transverse die seat provided with an enlarged recess, a die having a shank fitting in the seat and a head located in the enlarged recess, and a cap overlapping the die holder and the shank of the die, and a screw securing the cap plate to the die.
5. In apparatus of the character set forth, a die holderu having a transverse die seat provided With an enlarged recess in one side of said holder, a die extending across the die holder and having a shank tting in the seat Copies of this patent may be obtained for and a head located in the enlarged recess,
Vsaid head having an interlocking engagef ment With the Walls of said recess, a cap plate overlapping the free end of the shank and the side of the die holder opposite to that in which the head is located, a device detachably securing the cap plate to said end ofthe shank, and a device engaging the cap plate to hold the same against rotation.
In testimony Whereoil I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing WitV nesses..
EDWARD L. OLDI-IAM.
