` IMPROVEMENT IN VPRESERVING WOOD.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,141, dated November 21, 1871; antedated November 17, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAivrEs GRovER Voon- HEES, of Aqueduct Mills, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain Improvement in Wood-Preservers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing making apart of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved woodpreserver, showing the boiler or generator and its attachment to the preserver. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is an end view.

The same letters are used in all the figures in the designation of identical parts.

This invention relates to tanks or buildings employed as receivers for wood into the pores of which some preservative substance in the form of vapor is to be injected to preserve it from decay; and my improvement con sists in constructing such buildings Vvwith double walls of wood and lining the walls with roofing-felt or gas-tar paper in the inclosed space, and lling the latter with earth or asphaltum, as will be generally described in the following description and specifically pointed out in the claim.

To enable those skilledin the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the annexed drawing, F F represent the sliding door to the preserver, which is made as ordinary sliding doors are, and when closed to be clamped by hand-screws, as represented by I I, and between the door and building there are strips of rubber, so that when the door is clamped it will be air-tight. The building-which is usually made of Wood, but may be made of brick or stone-has any required dimensions, and is constructed with double walls, inclosing an intervening space. The walls are lined with roofingfelty in the space, and the latter is then packed with earth or asphaltum. The outer Wall is marked G and the inner one H.

.A building or tank of this kind can be con structed with a comparatively small outlay of money, is strong, and, having good non-conducting walls, prevents the too rapid condensation of the vapor in it.

B B are ventilators. Placed through the top and upon these ventilators are clappers, to open or shut to regulate the pressure of gas within. H H represent thermometers upon the outside of the building to indicate the intensity of heat within. G is the generator or boiler, which is placed at no specified distance from the preserver. D is the pipe conducting the gas, steam, or liquid to the preserver for the treatment of lumber. In Fig's. 2 and 3, R R It represent the railroad track, made of bars of railroad iron, upon which a car is placed to convey the lumber in and out of the preserver.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A tank or building for preserving wood, constructed with double walls Gr H, which are lined with roong-felt or its equivalent in the intervening space, and packed with earth or asphaltum, substantially as set forth.
