WINDOW-FRAME AND SASHES THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1917.
Application filed March 29, 1916. Serial No. 87,540.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Ros'sow, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements, in .Window Frames and Sashes Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a window, and more particularly to the class of window frames and sashes therefor.
An object of the invention is the provision of a window construction of this character wherein the inner stop bead and the parting strip are of novel construction so that portions thereof can be readily removed to permit the easy taking out of either the upper or lower sash, thereby enabling the window to be readily cleaned or repairs made thereto should the occasion require.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a window construction of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose and inexpensive of manufacture and installation.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is an elevation of a window frame and sashes Y therein looking toward the inner side of the same, with the inner stop bead and parting strip constructed in accordance with'the in vention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the window frame;
' Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. '1, showing the window sashes removed; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view through the window frame at the point of the inner stop bead; Fig. 5 is a similar view at the point of the parting strip; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view through a portion of the sash, showing the hook for the weight cord; and Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 77 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the tongue end at the lower section of the stop end and the plate. Fig. 9 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section taken through a portlon of the sash and plate, Fig. 10 is a transverse sectional view taken through the socket of the plate and sash.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates a window frame; B, the upper sash; C, the lower sash, the said window frame being provided with the usual inner stop beads D, and parting strips E, and both sashes are shown as being provided with sash cords or chains 10, which are carried over pulleys in the frame in the customary manner and are attached at their opposite ends to balance weights. The cords or chains 10 are detachably secured in the sashes B and C through the medium of hook and ear coupling members 11 and 12, respectively, the hookll' being fixed in the sashes while the ears 12 are carried by the cords or hooks.
The left hand stop bead D is made intwo sections, an upper normally fixed section 13 and a lower'removable section 14, and the parting strip E at this side of the window frame is also made in two sections, an upper fixed section 15 and a removable lower section 16, the removable sections of the parting strip and the stop bead being substantially the same length, and these removable sections of the parting strip and stop bead extend from the wall ofthe window frame A, for example, about one and a half inches above the normal position of the upper meeting rail of the lower sash, although the in a plate 19 countersunk in the vertical stile at the inner edge thereofof the window frame A, so that the said lower section 14 can be detachably secured in place. Theupper end of the lower section14 is bifurcated to form a tongue 20 which detachably engages in a socket 21 'cut and formed from a plate 22 secured to the upper section 13 of the stop bead so that the lower section 14 can be securely fastened in place, as will be apparent.
The lower section 16 of the operating strip is made in two parts which, at their adjacent or meeting ends, are connected together through the medium of a hinge 23, and in the leaf 24 of this hinge is threaded a clamp ing screw 25 which'i's adapted for threaded engagement in a plate 26 mounted in the vertical stile of the window frame A so that the lower section 16 of the parting strip can be detachably secured in place. The upper end of the lower section 16 of the parting strip is cut to provide a tongue 27, which latter fits in the socketendof a plate 28 which is secured to the upper section 15 of the parting strip, and in this manner the said lower section of the parting strip is held in place. The swinging lower part of the lower section permits the'easy removal of the tongue 27 from the plate 28 so that the said lower section can be readily removed from the window frame, and when these lowers'ections 14: and 16 of the stop bead D and parting strip E respectively are removed the window sashes B and C can be readily extracted from the window frame.
Fixed in the vertical stiles of the window frame A at the inner side thereof are hook-like keepers 29 with which engage the ears 12 when detached from the hooks on the sashes Band C so that the cords or chains 10 can be held when the window sashes are removed from the window frame.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the herein described window" sash and frame will be readily apparent and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
The combination with a window frame having sectional inner stop beads arranged one above the other, the upper section of said beads being permanently secured to the window frame while the lower section thereof is removable from the same, a platemounted on the lower end of the uppermost section of the stop bead and cut andbent'to provide a U-shaped socket extension beyond the end of said section, the upper end of the lower section being recessed and slotted to form a reduced intermediate tongue for detachable engagement in the" socket extension, and means on the vertical stile of the window frame and the lowermost section of thebead for detachably connecting the said lower section'of the head to the window frame.
In testimony whereof I affix my'signat'ure iin presence oftwo witnesses.
JOHN ROSSOV. Witnesses ALBERT G. Triws, GEORGE -KNIE.
