ANDREW LARsoN, or OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
CUTTER-HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1917.
Application led December 13A, 1915.l Serial No. 66,6711.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW- LARsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the countyfof Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements lin. Cutter-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cutter heads especially designed for cutting lock joints and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is the provision of the cutter head of this character with which beveled-joints, gluejoints and the like may be accurately cut, the cutter head being readily adjusted to vary the size of the tongue, groove, and bevelwhich forms the cut.
Another object is the provision of a'cutter head of this character which is simple in construction and reliable and eficient in operation, and which-maybe used on Shaper, rip saw or sticker machines.
With the above objects in view the cutter head comprises a circular body adapted to,
be mounted in any suitable manner upon the shaft of a machine to which it is applied, the said body being provided at Yits periphery with arcuate recesses adapted to receive bits of various design or pattern, the said bits being used to cut 'the diierent surfaces of the joint as will be explained hereinafter. As some of the recesses are located opposite each other at the opposite sides of the body, while the other recesses are located at one side of the body only. The bits are secured in position in the recesses and at the side of the body by means of bolts which pass transversely through the -vbits and the body. These bolts are provided with key ways and keys are located in the body and enter the key ways and positively hold the bolts against turning movement. Nuts are 4screwthreaded upon the bolts whereby the bits are securely held at adjusted positions with relation to the body.
With these objects in view the invention consists of the construction, combination, arrangement andv design of cutter heads adapted to form lock joints, as will be more fully described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and the novel features of which are particularly pointed out in the appended claim. It is to be understood however, that minor changes in details may beresorted to without departtional View of the vcutter head cut on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view cut on the line of 4.-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar view cut on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6` is a fragmentary edge view of the 7 is a similar view showing another arrangement of bits. Fig. 8 1s a snnilar vlew showing a b1t 1n another form of recess. Fig. 9
is a similar view showing a bit positioned Y at the top of the head. Fig. 10 is a cross sectional" view showing the 'form of joint which is cut bythe cutter head.
The cutter head l'comprises a circular body 1, having a central opening 2 adapted to receive a shaft whereby the head may be positioned upon the rotating shaft of a machine in any suitable or usualmanner. The body 1 is provided at its under side and at its periphery with arcuate recesses 3, the said recesses being disposed at diametrically opposite portions of thesaid body. Inasmuch as the recesses 3 are alike a description of one will answer.' Each recess has converging side walls t and a bottom fwall 5 which is disposed in a plane at an acute angle to the plane of the face of the body 1. Each recess 3 snugly receives .a bit 6 and each said bit is provided with angularly disposed cut- :head showing one arrangement of bits. Fig. l
The body 1 is provided at itsside opposite one of the recesses 3 with4 a recess 9- which is located at the periphery ofthe said body. The bottom wall 10 of the recessr9 is edge 12 is `located at the inner-side of the bit 11 and is disposed substantially'radially with relation to the bodyv l, while the cut.-y Y
Vbears against the outer side of the bit `11Y at the center thereof and the said bolt is `further provided along its sha-nk with longitudinally disposed key ways 16. A key 17 is located in the body 1 and fits in the key way 16, the said keyasshown in Fig. 3 of the Y drawing `is disposed between the bits 6 and 11.I Agnut 18'is screwed uponthe bolt 14 and bears .at its inner face against the outer side of the bit 6 at. the center thereof Vand serves as means for securely holding the bits 6 and 11 atadjusted positions in the recesses 3 and 9 respectively.
v vThe body lis' provided at the same side at which the recess 9 is located with another recess 19 which is also located at the periphery of the body 1 The recess ,19 is arcuate in plan and is ,opposite the otherrecess 3. Thebottom wallv20 of the recess 19 is disposed atan acute angleto the plane of the faces of the ibody 1 .but ylies parallel with thebottoin wall 5 of the recess 3 directly opposite the ksaid recess-19. A bit 21 is fitted in the recess' 19 and the said bit 21 is provided with two angularly disposed cutting edges 22 and 23, the cutting edge 22 is located at the outer side of the disk 21 and isdisposed` approximately radially with relation tothe body 1 while the'cutting edge 23, isdisposed approximately parallel with theperiphery of thebody 1. It will be observed that the bitslland 21 are of the same .general pattern, the exception being that the radially cutting edge 12 of the bit 11is located at the inner side of the bit while the radial cutting edge 22 of the bit V21 is located at the outer side of the said bit 2l. rEhe cutting edges 13 and 23 of the bits lland 21 lie substantially in the same path of travel in a direction parallel with the plane of the face of the body 1.
A bolt24 passes transversely through the bit 21 and the opposite bit 6 and the edge portion of the body 1 and the head of the bolt 24 bears against the outer side of the bit 21 while a nut 25 is screwthreaded upon the bolt 24Cv and bears against the outer surface `of the opposite'bit 6. lThe bolt 24: 'is provided with a key kway 26 which receives a key27 located-in vthevbody 1 between the bits 21 and 6. Therefore it will be seenthat ywhen the nut 25 tightened, lthe bolt 24 is positively held against turning movement in thel body 1, and the bits 21 and 6 are securelyfl held at adjusted position in the respective recesses which receive the same.
Y j The body 1 is provided at the same side 'at which the recesses 9 and 19 arelocated with other recessesy 28. YThe recesses 28 are located at'the periphery of the body 1 and are at diametrical opposite points thereof. Bits 29 are located in the recesses 28 and are held therein by means of bolts similar tothe bolt 24; hereinbefore described. The
The cutter head as shown and described when applied to a rotating shaft may cut at the edge of a strip of "wood a joint consisting of inner and outer bevel surfaces a tongue located adjacent one bevel surface and a groove between the tongue and the inner edge ofthe otherbeveled surface as shown in the accompanying drawing. Furthermore the edges of thetongue are chamferred which is accomplished by the concaved cutting edges 30of the bits 29. The cutting edges of the `bits 6 cut one beveled surface on the stick of timber, the cutting edges 33 on the bits 31 cut theother beveled surface on the said stick of timber and the cutting edges 12 and 13 of the bit 11 and 22 and 23 of the bit 21 formV the bottom and opposite side walls of the groove which is adjacent the tongue on the stick of timber. It is apparent that by providing such joints'at the edges -of two sticks oftimber by passing the timber by the cutter head in planes at angles to each other .the said joints will interiit and interlock and by providing the beveled edges at the tongues suiiicient space is left for thereception'of glue or other vadhesive whereby the said sticks of timber may be securely glued and held together. Y y z Vlt is also apparent that by adjusting the two bits11 and 21circularly in their respective recesses 9 and 19, the depth of the groove which isgcutin the timber may be regulated and also the transverse thickness of the tongue ofthe stick of timber may .be increased or diminished. When it is deand that the same may be efficiently used for accurately cutting lock joints to be used for joining strips or sticks of wood together.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A cutter head comprising a body having recesses, a bit mounted in a recess at one side thereof and adapted to cut a beveled surface upon a stick of timber, another bit mounted -in a recess at the opposite side thereof and adapted to cut a groove in the stick of timber, said groove being Ispaced from said bevel surface thereby leaving a tongue between the groove and the bevel surface, another bit mounted in a recess of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the youd the side thereof and adapted to cut a bevel surface upon the stick of timber adjacent the said groove.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
