To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, EDWARD GLYDE HoNnA, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Alexandria, in the parish of Rapides and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flange-Turners, of which the following is a specification.`
My invention relates to al device for turni ingthe anges of wheels on railway vehicles, and the like, and has particular reference to a device adapted to be secured to a brake shoe head in the place ordinarily occupied by the lbrake shoe and to be held into proper contact with the -V iange of the wheel by a suitable application of the brakes, for cutting or'turning the flange upon the movement of the vehicle in the proper direction.
An important object ofthe invention. is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, convenient in use, and highly eilicient in operation.
Other objects vandl advantagesof the invention will be apparent during the .course of the following description.
In'the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals 'are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure. 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention, showing the same applied to-a brake shoe head, Fig. 2.is an edge elevation of the same removed, Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same, showing the cutter, Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same, and, Fig. 5 a transverse sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 4. v
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 deslgnates a flanged wheel, which for the purpose of illustration, will be shown as one 'of the drivers of a locomotive, while it is to be understoodthat the invention is adapted for acting upon the flanged wheels of any railway vehicle. side of the wheel 10 is a brake mechanism, of any well lknown or preferred construction, comprising a brake shoe head 11, supported by a piv`oted'link 12. As the brake mechanism forms no part of the present invention, no further description'4 thereof is thought to be necessary.-
My device comprises -a Arranged upon vone longitudinally v ranged upon the face of the brake shoe head 4 11,' in place ofthe brake shoe, which has been removed. Any suitable means may be employed to retaln the body portion 13 upon the head 11. For the purpose of illustration I have shown the body portion 13 as provided near its upper end with a lip or projection 14, .adapted to enter an'openlng 15 formed 1n the head 11. The bod v portion 13 is provided at its lower end wit a flange 15, to be arranged beneath the lower end of the head 11. .The body portion; 5' has a transverse opening .16 for receivmg a screw 17or the like, serving to attach the body portion 13 to the head 11, the head of the screw being counter-sunk, as shown.
The body portion .13 is provided at its inner edge with a longitudinally extending groove 18 formed ina longitudinal head 1 for receiving the ilange 19 of the wheel. Arranged` upon the upper end or top 'of the body portion 13 is acutter 19, pivoted thereto vas shownat 20. This cuttervhas its cutting edge 21 of a proper curvature, to impart to the ilange the desired shape. The
cutting edge 21 is adapted to be moved across the groove 18, to contact with the j, flange 19 by the adjusting of a bolt 22, -having screw-'threaded engagement within an apertured extension 23, rigidly secured to the edge of the body portion 13, at its upper end. The bolt 22 contacts with the extension of the cutter 19, 'as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 3.
-In the use of the device, the body rportion 13 is secured to the head 11, in the place normally occupied by the brake shoe,-
-and this body portion is secured thereto, as
above indicated. The brakes. are properly applied to bring the body portion l13 .into contact with the periphery of the wheel, but .not suiiiciently to Vprevent the travel of the vehicle. By -means of a wrench or the like, the adjusting bolt 22 may be manipulatedto adjustl the cutter 19, vso that its j will properly cut or turn cutting edge 21 The vehicle is then caused the flange 19.
-to travel in the proper direction for causing the cutter 21 to act upon the ange, and turn the same to the proper shape.. It is obvious that the device may be constructed for use upon the right or left wheels of the vehicle.
It is to be understood that the form of my curved body portion 13, adapted to be arinvention herewith shown vand described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that varlous changes in the shape,
