Description

w. s. BuRmN.
Improvement in Lifting Jacks.
v Patented Nov. 21, 1871.
UNITED STATES WALTER S. BURGIN, OF WASHINGTON, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,081, dated November 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER S. BURGrIN, of Washington, in the county of Orange and State of Vermont, have invented an Improved Wagon-Jack, of which the following is a specification:
Figures 1 and 2 are sectional elevations of my improved lifting-jack, showing the slide respectively raised and lowered.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspond ing parts.
This invention relates to a new arrangement of parts constituting a lifting mechanism for a wagon-jack; and consists in the combination of an operating handle with a connecting link and pivoted lever or support for the slide, as hereinafter more fully described.
A in the drawing represents the case or main frame of the jack. It is made in form of a rectangular narrow box, standing on a stout base or board, a, and open on top for the reception of the lifting-slide B. The slide has its upper edge made in form of steps, to be originally applicable to articles of different heights. The lower end of the slide rests, with the small rounded point b, which is formed on it, upon a lever, O, pivoted at d to the case A. The free end of the lever 0 projects through a slot in the case, and is, by a link, 0, connected with the short arm of a leverhandle, D, which is pivoted to ears f f, projecting from the side of the case A. By swinging the handle D down the lever G will be swung up and the slide elevated, as in Fig. 1, the connecting hinge or pivot g between link and handle being carried beyond the line drawn through the lower hinge or pivot i of the link and the pivot h of the handle, so as thereby to lock the parts and prevent the weight on the slide from crowding it down. By swinging the handle up, as in Fig. 1, the slide will be let down. The combined leverage of the parts D and 0 gives great power and facilitates the raising of heavy weights.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the handle I), link 0, and lever O with the sliding elevator B and supporting case A, all arranged to constitute a jack, as specified.
