Description
Patented Dec. 19, 1854.
L. STEIN.
REVOLVING FAN.
UNITED STATES.
PATENT, OFFICE;
LOUIS s'rnnv, on NEW .YORKyN. Y.
. Specitication'forming part of Letters Patent No. 12, 1 06, dated December 19, 185 1. I
To alt whom it mag/concern: I
Bejit knownthat I, .Loms STEIN, ot' the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Revolving Fan for-AgitatingAir in Apartments; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompan'ying' drawings, making part of this specification, in which-- Figure is an elevation, and hig'. 2 a plan below the ceiling, to which itis attachedwhen in use. The sameletters-indicate like parts in the two figures. v "In my improved fan the wings are hinged along one. edge 'to the horizontal arms project:- ing from. a'hollow shaft hungon a'p'endent studattached-toand suspended fronithe ceilin g of an apartment, the said wings-being provided at their inner ends with crank arms. which, as the shaft rotates, strike againstcam formed projections or tappets, which cause the wings to vibrate on the arms toivhich they are hinged, and thus to agitate the air in the apartment by a vrevolving-and flapping mok tion. The rotary motion is impartcd -by elec-. tro-inagnets connected with a suitable galvanic battery. I a 1 In the accompanying drawings, at represents a stud attached by its upperend to the ceil in'gof an apartment. -'To-the outside of this stud is fitted a hollow'shaft, b,'which is suspended nntlturiis therein freely. This s haft is provided with a cog-wheel, c, whichengages the teeth'ot' a worm-wheel, d, onfa horizontal shaft, '0, which has its bearings in-a suitable frame also attached to the ceiling,'an d this shaft ,3 carries four (more or' less) electro magnets, f, arranged at equal distances apart around'thc shaft, and the different wiresof the'several electro-magnets are bedded in'the surface of the shaft in the usual manner of making electro-lnagnetic engines, and a'gai nst' this part of the shaft there are two wires, g g, which spring and bear-against it, and which. communicate with the opposite poles of a. gab. vanic battery of any suitable' construction not necessary to represent.
Suitable armatures, h, are arranged at'suitable distances around the series of electro-magr nets, so that when the battery is in action the .shaflzg; is-keptin rapid rotation by the'electric ciirrent,which imparts acorrespondin g rotary motion-to the hollcw'shat't b.
From the lower end ofthe sh'aftb project two horizontal 311118,): e, to each of which is" stretched some s'nitableclot-h, which is kept properly distendedby the frame.- The cloth prqi'ects beyond the outer edge-of the frame,-
so as to yield readily in flapping. The inner end of the frame is formed-with a crank-arm,
k," which,-as the shaft rotates, strikes ,in .snc-.
ce'ssion'and passes over cam ortappet projec tions l'on" the stud'a, so that as the shaft b -.rotat'es,- carryin g the fans around with rapidity, the striking of the crank-arms against the projectionmcams, or tappets causes the wings to flap,and thus to agitate the air in the apartment.-
' v v v V The wings are made toretnrn to their origi-.
nal positiolneithcr by gravity alon e, or, if that be not sufiicien't it may be aided by springs attached to the arms '2' iand-lbearing on the;
frames of thewings. v
The arms'and wings can be made of any de- "sired.- magnitude to suit the sizeof the apartment, and, whatever the size, by. means of a very small battery the wings can be kept in motion day and. night at a veryfslight expense,
and thus,',by the combined revolvingand flap pingmotion of the wings, produce a constant and pleasant agitation of the air, which may roice'or the-battery. r I v If. desired, this apparatus can be inverted beincreased or diminished by.'varying the and placed on'a pedestal.
, What I claimas my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is-
. Giving the combined revolvmg and flapping motion-to the wings of a fan for cooling apart- Witnesses:
