To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANKLIN G. Naiv- BERTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Buttons, of which the following description, in connec tion with the accompanying drawlngs, 1s a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to buttons of that class which comprise a rounded-or domeshaped head or body portion and a shank by which the button may be secured 1n place.
It is an object of the invention to provlde a novel button of this class comprising a metallic blank and a fast color covering, that is to say, a covering of celluloid or other plastic material homogeneous in color. Such buttons possess great advantages in point of appearance and wearing qualities over those formerly known and may be produced in a great variety of colors to suit widely different requirements. For example, buttons having a covering of white celluloid may be produced cheaply and used in place of the imported buttons now in demand for white boots and shoes, or buttons having a covering of red or blue celluloid may be used with textile goods of similar color.
It has been found that a button comprising a two-part metallic blank presenting a continuous upstanding flan e and a curved portion partially separated rom the flange by an annular recess or valley and having a coating of celluloid applied to its outer surfaces possesses the qualifications above enumerated and also certain other advantages which will appear hereinafter.
As herein shown the metallic blank comprises a flanged disk and a dome-shaped member arranged to fit within the flange of the disk portion, being retained in place by the engagement of the flange with its outer marginal edge.
A button of this character is well adapted to be manufactured cheaply upon a large scale in that the parts of the metal blank may be assembled and' handled accurately and rapidly by automatic machines. Moreover, the button itself is of strong construction, the body being formed by a convex metal part which supports the covering rigidly. The constructional feature which consists in arranging the flange of the base portion to surround and embrace the marginal edge of the convex portion is of importance and contributes largely to the strength of the button in that it positively prevents spredaing of the convex portion when subjected to pressure upon its apex or crown. A further advantage incident to this construction results from the fact that the annular recess formed between the inner surface of the flange and the outersurface of the convex portion afl'ords secure and permanent anchorage for the plastic covering material.
While the metal portions of the button herein shown are primarily intended for use as a blank to be covered with plastic or other coating material, the metal blank may be finished in other ways if desired or it may be used without coating.
The advantages above discussed and others incident to the invention will be best understood and appreciated from. the fol-' lowing description of a preferredembodi ment thereof selected for purposes of illus tration and shown, on an enlarged scale, in the accompanying drawings, in which,-

Referring-to Figs. 1 to 3, it will be seen that the base of the metallic blank comprises a sheet metal disk 10 having its outer edge drawn or bent upwardly to form an annular flange 12. -The disk 12' is provided at its center with an elongated slot 13 to receive the contracted portion of a shank 14. which comprises a loop, a contracted portion, and

After the metallic portions of the button is applied and molded in place by the use of suitable dies in the manner well known. to those skilled in the art The covering material, in a plastic condition, is forced upon and into intimate contact with the surface of the domeshaped member 16 and the outer and" upper surfaces of the flange 12. It is also forced into the V-shaped recess formed between the inner surface of the flange 12 and the outer surface of the dome-shaped member 16. It has been found in practice that this recess affords secure and permanent anchorage for the covering materlal.

Having thus described the button; of my invention and briefly outlined one method of producing it, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. 6. A fast color button comprising ashank carrying disk having an upstanding rim, a convex sheet metal body portion held permanently in place upon the disk within the rim, and a plastic covering extending smoothly from the apex. of the body portion over the edge of the rim of the shank carrying disk and about the outeri surface thereof. 7. A fast color button comprisinga hollow convex body portion with a circular margin, a separate narrow metallic band sur-' rounding themargin'of-the convex portion, reinforcing it against expansion, the band being spaced from the surface of the convex portlon at its upper edge to provide a recess, and plastic covering material molded portion and flange and filling over theouter surface and edge of the band and convex portion and filling the recess.
