EDDIE D. THORP, OF DODGE CITY, KANSAS.
PNEUMATIC FEEDER FOR THBESHING-MACHINES OR THE LIKE.
Application filed September 30, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDDIE D. THoRr, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Dodge City, in the county of Ford, State ofv Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Feeders for hreshing-dachines or the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in pneumatic feeders for use in connection with threshing mechines, shredders or the like, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the material to be fed to the machine will first be drawn by suction into the feeder, and discharged therefrom to the machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide a feeder of this type having means for automatically regulating the suction so as to revent clogging of the feeder.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a top plan view. Fig. 4c is a sectional view on line 14 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the casing, which consists of fan chambers 2, the same being in spaced parallel relation and having their walls 3 provided with central openings 1. The walls 3 and hood 4, in conjunction, form a central chamber 5, which has leading thereto the inlet pipes 7, and through which the material passes to the machine. The material fed to the device is led in through pipes 7 into the inter mediate chamber, from which it is delivered to the fans through the openings 4, and is then delivered into the discharge pipe 6, which is common to the fan chambers.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 191?.
Serial No. 53,449.
Communicating with the hood 4: is a pair of flexible pipes 7, and through which the material to be fed is drawn by suction created by the fans 8 which are mounted in the chambers 2, said fans being fixed to the shaft 9, which is journaled in the sides of the casing 1. A pulley 10 is fixed to one end of the shaft 9, and is engaged by a belt, (not shown) which serves to rapidly rotate the shaft and thus the fans.
Mounted on the hood 4 is a pipe 11 having mounted therein a butterfly valve 12, the spindle of which has fixed to its outer end a gear 13 which meshes with the segment 14:, which is pivotally mounted through the medium of the arm 15, said arm being connected to the collar of the governor 16, said governor having the lower ends of its shaft 17 provided with a beveled gear 18, which meshes with the similar gear 19 fixed to one end of the shaft 9. Thus it will be seen that if the shaft 9 rotates-too rapidly the governor will act to open the valve 12, thus reducing the suction in pipes 7 and preventing clogging of the device due to feeding too rapidly. Thus it will be seen that when the fans are rotated, material will be drawn in through the pipes 7, the central chamber 5 and the openings 4, after which it will be forced through the discharge pipe 6.
What is claimed is z'- A suction feeder comprising a casing having fan chambers, and an intermediate chamber, a hood communicating with the intermediate chamber, fans rotatably mounted in the fan chambers, inlet pipes connected to the hood, a discharge pipe leading from the fan chambers, a pipe carried by the hood, a valve mounted in the pipe, means for rotating the fans, and means for operating the zalve to relieve the suction created by the ans.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
