CUSPIDOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
melted Jan. 2, 19 17.
Application filed. July 28, 1915. serial 42,339. A
To all whom'z't may concern:
Be it known that I, HonAon CRIsLER, citizenof the United States, residing at Doyleville, in the county of White and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cuspidors and more particularly to cuspidors designed primarily for use beneath desks, chairs, tables, counters, and like articles of store and oflice furniture.
An object of the invention is to provide a cuspidor in which the mouth or bowl may be yieldingly moved laterally of its supporting container.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a cuspidor a means whereby the receiving pan or container may be removed and replaced, at will, and for cleaning purposes. 4
I further contemplate a cuspidor susceptible of use under various conditions and circumstances.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the acco1npanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claimswhich are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several Views, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved cuspidor; and Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Before proceeding with a description of the drawings I desire to call particular attention to the fact that while I have evolved my invention with reference to its use beneath articles of store and oflice equipment,
the same, if desired, may be used, as shown in the drawings, upon railway coaches, and in fact, upon and under various other conditions and circumstances.
Referring now to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a suitable box or casing within which the receiving pan or container 2 is adapted to be arranged. The said container 2 is provided with a handle 3 that its removal from a position within to a position withoutithe box .or casing 1 maybe facilitated. The front or forward end of the container 2, designated 1, affords a closure for the boX or casing 1, and with the said casing a support for the top 5. The mentioned top 5 of the casing is removable to permit of interior cleaning, suitable spring latches 6 acting as the retaining means whereby the saidtop is yieldingly held in place.
An opening/7 is formed in the casingtop through which opening the curved stem or horn 8 of a bowl or mouth 9 passes. An annular flange 10 is formed upon the stem 8 at a point in proximity to one end thereof, the said flange 10 being adapted for engagement with a collar 11 secured to the casing top that the bowl may be moved relatively to said casing laterally or in the path of a circle. Springs 12 are fastened to the stem 8 and to the casing top that the bowl or mouth 9 may be returned to its normal position subsequent to forced movement while in use, and the stem 8 also maintained in engagement with the opening 7 formed in the casing top 5, the annular flange 10 in this particular instance, bearing upon the upper edge of the collar 11, thereby preventing accidental displacement of the stem.
From the above construction, it is apparent that the cuspidor may be arranged beneath a desk, counter or other structure, and, when in use, the mouth or bowl swung laterally from a position therebeneath, such movement being against tension of one or the other of the springs 12, and, subsequent to use, returned to its normal position beneath the structure where it is partially or entirely removed from view.
A cuspidor of this character is particularly desirable as an article of oflice equipment in that it may be used repeatedly and at the same time, be normally removed from view. In operation, it is but necessary that the mouth or bowl be forced toward one side of the casing 1. Springs 12 will operate automatically to return the bowl or mouth to normal position subsequent to use. Concluding, attention is called to the fact that the container 2 may be removed, that the top may be removed and the casing interiorly cleaned; and that the stem 8, by reason of its formation will serve to conduct or convey all matter directed to the bowl or mouth 9 to the container 2.
In reduction to practice, I have found I desire to emphasize the fact that variousminor changes in details of construction,
proportion and arrangement ofparts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages ofmy invention, as defined in the appended claims.
. Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a cuspidor, a container, a stem having a mouth on the free end thereof mount- .ed for oscillatory movement in a horizontal plane above, the top of the container, and opposed springs secured to the container and to said stem for yieldably maintaining the latter in a predetermined position and eX- erting a downward pull thereon whereby the stem will be securely held in engagement with the container.
2. In acuspidor, a container having a mouth on the free end thereof mounted for oscillatory mo veme nt in a horizontal plane 'above the top of the container, an annular "flange formed upon said stem in proximity curely held in engagement with the container. .7 V
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
