POST.
Post, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be em- .ployed as afence post, and for any and all purposes for which a strong, substantial, simply constructed metal post may be demanded.
The invention aims to provide a post which may be fashioned at trifling expense out of metal, the post possessing unusualstrength, with a mlnimum amount of metal.
It'is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
Vith the abowe and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details ofconstruction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit ofthe invention.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 shows in side elevation, one form of post constructed in accordance with the present invention, sundry of the wire securing elements being omitted in the figure, in order that the staple receiving holes in the post may be more clearly disclosed; Fig. 2, is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an elevation showing a modified/form of the invention; Fig. 4 is a. cross section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a cross section similar to Fig. 4, but showing a slight modification in the invention; Fig. -6 is a fragmental perspective of the structure shown in Fig. 5.
In carrying out the invention, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 there is provided a metal post 1 adapted to serve as a fence post. The post 1 comprises a pair of 2 members denoted generally by the' numeral- 2, each Z Specification of Letters Patent.

and 5 projecting in opposite directions, and being connected with opposed, longitudinal, vertical edges of the body 3. The flanges 4 of the 2 members 2 are overlapped upon each other as shown in Fig. 2 and are connected by rivets 6 or other securing elements adapted to-a like end. The outer longitudinal edges of the anxiliary flanges 5 are sup plied with longitudinal ribs 7. Adjacent the point of union between the auxiliary flanges 5 and the body portions 3 of the Z members 2, the auxiliary flanges 5 are provided with longitudinally extended ribs 8. The outer edges of the main flanges 4 are equipped with longitudinal ribs 9, the inner edges of the main flanges 4: being equipped with; longitudinal ribs 10, the ribs 9 being sQ'that the ribs 10 may fit there so an shown in Fig. 2 of the draw- Irrthe main flanges 4 of the Z mem- 7 lllgS.
bers 2, registering openings 12 are provided,
the openings 12 being diminished in width adjacent their ends.
A fence wire 11 may cooperate with auxiliary flanges 5, afence wire 15 cooperating with theoverlapped main flanges el, all as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Either of the wires 11 or 15 may be dispensed with if desired,
or both the wires may be used together as' shown in Fig. 2. The wire 14 cooperates with the ribs 7 and 8, the wire 15 cooperating with the 'ribs 9. Vashers may bear against the flanges 5, similar washers coactmg with the innermost main flange 1 of the post, as shown 1n Fig. 2. The washers may ,be of rectangular outline as shown at 16 in Fig. 1, or they may be of circular outline, as shown at 17 in the said figure. The washers, whatever be their form, are provided with openings 18 through which are passed the legs of a staple 19, the bend of the staple engaging the wire 14 or the wire 15. The legs of the staples 19 are twisted together as shown at 20, to engage the washers. By means of the twisted staples 19, the wire may be kinked as shown at 20 and enter the ends of the openings 12 or, if
desired, the wire may run straight from one longitudinal rib to the other as indicated at 22.
From the foregoing description it will be obvious that the post forming the subject matter of this application compnses'a.
trough-shaped central portion provided alongits longitudinal edges with oppositely projecting, parallel flanges disposed sub-, sta-ntially at right angles to the side walls of the central portion. I
As shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the fence post 23 comprises a trough-shaped central portion 24 having oppositely projecting flanges- 25 provided with ribs 26 corresponding to the ribs 7 and 8. A wlre 27 extends across the'ribs 2 6 and may be kinked between the ribs of the respective flanges as shown at 28, the wire being engaged by twisted staples 29 passing through restrlcted openings 30 in the flanges 25 and coacting with washers 31 of the type hereinbefore described. In this form of the invention, the post 23 is a one-piece structure, and is not built up out of two 2 members, as shown in Fig." 2. I
In Fig. 5 of the drawings, the post 1s a one-piece structure like the form shown in Fig. 4, and includes a trough-shaped body 32 provided with ribs 33 corresponding tothe ribs 9 and 10, the post comprislng oppositely projecting flanges-34, equipped -w1th' ribs 35 corresponding to the ribs 7 and 8.
The essential difference between the formshown in Fig. 5 and the form shown in Fig. 4 resides in the fact that the form shown in Fig. 5 is provided with ribs 33.
As shown in Fig. 6, the post embodies a trough-shaped central portion 36 having op-. positely projecting flanges 41 provided with ribs 37, corresponding to the ribs 8 in Fig. 2, the flanges 41 being provided with ribs 38 corresponding to the ribs? of Fig. 2.
The flanges 41 may have tongues .39 struck therefrom and adapted to be bent either up wardly or downwardly'to engage with thewire 40, the latter coacting with the ribs 37 and 38. In this connection it isto be understood that the tongues 39 and the washers 1617 and the twisted staples 19 maybe used interchangeably on all forms of the invention wherein a wire holding means is required.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A metal post including a troughportion and side walls projecting in a comflanges disposed approximately parallel to -''the intermediate portion, the flanges being dished longitudinally toward the intermediate portion to form outstanding ribs adjacent the freev longitudinal edges of the flanges,s and to form outstanding ribs at-the places of juncture between the flanges and the side walls.
2.1 A metal post including a trough-shaped I posed approximately parallel to the intermediate portion, the intermediateqportion and the flanges beingdished longitudinally toward each other to form outstanding ribs adjacent the free longitudinal edges of the flanges, to form outstanding ribs at the places of juncture between the flanges and the side walls, and to form oustanding ribs at the places of juncture between the side walls and the intermediate portion.
3. A metal "post made; up of two Z- members including flanges which are or'er lapped to cause the post to comprise a trough-shaped body and oppositely projecting flanges on the longitudinal edges of the body; and means for uniting the overlapped flanges 4; A metal post including a troughshaped body ,and' oppositely projectingflanges at the free edges of the body, the post being made up of apair of Z-members having over apped flanges provided with .opemngs; and a wire holdingmeans located in the openings.
5. A metal post including a A troughshaped body and oppositely projecting flanges at the longitudinal edges of the body, the post being made up of a pair of Z-menh bers having-overlapped flanges, the over-- lapped flanges being provided along their longitudinal edges with inter-engaged longitudinal ribs; and means for uniting the overlapped flanges of the Z-members.
In testimony that I claim theioregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixedmy signature in the presence of two. witnesses. shaped body comprismg an intermediate HENRY KROPP BENTE.
