Description

C. G. JACK,
STEAM CONDENSER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 1. I9i6.
Patented Dec. 26, 1916.
pnr rnn srarns PATENT orrrcn.
CLIFFORD G. TACK, OF GARBISON, NEBRASKA.
STEAM-CONDENSER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 1, 1916. Serial No. 88,313.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD G. JACK, a citizen 'ofthe United States, residing at Garrison, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Condensers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steam condensers, and particularly to a steam condenser clesigned for domestic and like restricted uses Where small quantities of distilled water are required, the primary object of the invention being to provide a condenser which may be employed on domestic stoves of various kinds to receive and condense the steam from the spouts of kettles and the like, whereby a supply of distilled water may be obtained at a negligible cost.
A further object of the invention is to provide a condenser which is simple of construction, reliable and efficient in action, and susceptible of manufacture at such cost as to bring it easily within the reach of small householders.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a steam condenser constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same as set up for use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the condenser. Figs. 8 and 4; are vertical sections through the condenser taken in planes at right angles to each other. Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing a slight modification.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a condenser comprising an oblong rectangular receptacle 1, made of sheet metal or other suitable material, and of adequate size to supply a given amount of distilled water within a determined time. This receptacle is open at the top and bottom and provided with a concavo-convex partition or condensing plate 2, which is of semi-circular form in cross section as shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, or of inverted V-form, as shown at 2 in Fig. 5, the lower or concaved surface 3 of said partition or plate forming a condensing surface, while the interior of the receptacle provides a chamber or reservoir 4: to receive a body of cooling water, which lies in contact with the upper or convex surface of said partition 2.
The device is designed in practice to be supported above the spouts of kettles or the like on stoves or ranges, so that the vapor escaping therefrom will pass upwardly into the lower or condensing chamber and against the cooled condensing surface 3, on which the steam will be condensed and will trickle or flow down along the condensing surface 3 and front and rear walls and pass into collecting gutters or channels 5, 6, 7 and 8. These gutters or channels are preferably formed by bending inwardly the metal of which the walls are shaped into gutter form, and said gutters or channels are arranged at different elevations and inclined so that the gutter .8 will discharge at its ends into the gutters 5 and 7, which gutters will in turn discharge at one end into the gutter 6, which latter is provided with a projecting discharge spout 9, from which'the water of suitable receptacle. s
For the purpose of supporting the con denser at a desired elevation above the stove or vessel, 1 provide the condenser with sup porting legs 10. These legs may vary in height as occasion may require. It will be seen that in practice the device may be supported in position over one'or more kettles or other utensils on a stove from which steam is escaping to catch the steam rising therefrom, which steam will be condensed and collected in the gutters and may be discharged into a suitable receptacle for use.
The device provides a simple, reliable and convenient article which has sufiicient condensing capacity for ordinary use and the capacity of which may be varied as desired by varying the size of the device as required. Owing to the simple form of construction the condenser may be manufactured and sold at such a comparatively low cost-as to bring it easily within the reach of, the ordinary householder.
I claim A device of the character described comprising a rectangular receptacle open at top and bottom and having arranged therein a dome-shaped partition extending between the side walls of said receptacle and abutting against the end walls thereof, said partition providing'upper and lower sloping surfaces leading to said side walls, and dividing the receptacle to form an upper chamber to receive a cooling liquid and a lower Patented Dec. 26, 1916.?
'75 condensation may be discharged into any condensing chamber, a, discharge gutter In testimony whereof I affix my signature ionne? upon ofiie g thefenilwalls, tgultteri, in presence of two witnesses.
