Be it lmown that I, Euonnn E. HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at (Joraopolis, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invente oer tain new and useful Improvements in Lighting-Fixtures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact'description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to illuminating and lighting fixtures generally, but is designed and intended more especially for use as a ceiling fixture or bowl. I

It has for an objectthe production of an exceedingly attractive and highly, ornamental fixture of the character'indicated,

which is comparatively inexpensiveto manufacture, also of simple construction, and as a consequence easily assembled, or dismantled byeither skilled or unskilled persons forpurposes of cleaning, repairing, or for replacing lamps therein.

A further object is the production of fixtures wherein the glass-ware "or {shade element isformed of independent separable sections, thereby facilitating repairs in case of breakage by the mere substitution of parts.

A further object of the invention is the provision of means for insuring a most eificient distribution of light, and the reflection thereof in a downward direction.

A further object is the production of a' light, durable and compact fixture wherein the several cotiperating parts are assembled and combined a novel and peculiarly effective manner.

With the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view the invention will be hereinafter particularly describedand later pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings which form part of this application for Letters Patent, and whereon corresponding numerals refer to like parts in the several views: Figure 1, is a side elevation of the invention the several component parts thereof being here shown in assembled and operative relation, Fig. 2, is a vertical central section upon a relatively enlarged scale, taken through the complete device showing its structural arrangement, and Fig. 3, IS a nren'rme-rrx'ruan horizontal section taken upon the line 3 of Fig. 2,,lookin downward, but on a scale corresponding with that of Fig. 1.

Although the drawings illustrate the present invention in connection with incandescent electric lamps, it will, of course, be understood that any other source of light may be employed, and that the form or character of burner or illuminating device may be varied indefinitely without in the least departing from the spirit of my invention.

Upon the threaded lower end 3 of outlet 2, immediately beneath reflector 5, is screwed a follower, or union coupling 6, having a plurality of horizontally arranged laterals 7 radiating therefrom, at a point intermediate its ends, and in turn themselves screw threaded upon their interiors. Into these laterals 7 are secured hollOw wire conducting stems '8 upon which are mounted horizontal lamps 9 in the well understood manner, and likewise into the lowermost end of outlet 2 is received another stem 10 for similarly supporting a depending lamp 11 and wiring connections as shown by I Fig. 2.

Immediately beneath the coupling 6, and upon the projecting end of tubular outlet 2, is screwed the hub 12 of a circular flanged cap 13 threaded upon its interior as at 14, one function thereof being to securely follow up, and retain in position, the'superimposed coupling 6, and reflector. 5 aforesaid.

Surrounding reflector 5, and practically inclosing all parts heretofore mentioned, is a main shade :member or section 15 of transparent or translucent material and ofconvex form, having a central opening 16 of liberal proportions. The form-. of convex shade-member 15 shown is practically that Tit of a hemisphere with its central portion u wardl indented around 0 ening 16. s best s own by Fig. 2 the said convex shade member 15, or the annular indented portion 17 thereof, is supported directly upon the circular shoulder 18 of a dependlng secondary shade member 19, also of transparent or translucent material such as glass, the present illustrations showing this element as of substantially acorn form, and in any event provided with an upwardly extending neck 20 having a threaded exterior 21. This threaded exterior 21 of neck 20 upon member 19, is a counterpart of thread '14 upon the interior of flange 13, andis screwed thereinto when the fixture is assembled, for the double purpose of suporting the secondary shade member 19, and by agency of the latter similarly supporting the main shade member 15, beneath ceiling 1. And by reason of the extended lower end of tubular outlet 2 it will be observed that a range of adjustment is provided to accommodate shades of varying depths and shape.

Obviously the shade members 15 and 19, may be plain as shown, or the surface configuration and ornamentation thereof may be varied indefinitely without departing from the invention involved. They may be of clear glass or colored, of cut glass or molded, prismatic, corrugated or otherwise decorated, in manner andform as is well I understood by persons skilled in the art to which this invention relates. In any event, however, it is desirable, although by no means essential, that shades of this character be ground, etched, sandblasted or otherwise frosted upon one or both surfaces as a means of softening or difiusing the light rays.

This being a description of the present invention its use and operation are quite obvious and need not therefore be herein dwelt upon. It may be noted however, with what facility the secondary shade member 19 follows up all other parts of the structure and keys them. securely and adjustably together; and it should also be noted that it is considered quite within the spirit of my invention to finally secure this shade member 19 into its flanged cap 13, either by screw threads as shown, or any other suitable means which is readily detachable.

Having thus described my invention, what I now claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: j

1. A lighting fixture including in combination a suitable hanger, a shade section depending from said hanger, a second shade section resting upon and supported by the first mentioned section, and a reflector positioned within the second shade section aforesaid.

2. A lighting fixture including in combi-. nation a vertically adjustable hanger having depending flanges, a shade section detachably secured to the flanges of sand ban or and an independent shade sect1 on having a central opening adapted to receive the upper portion of the first mentioned shade section and to rest thereon.

'3. A lighting fixture including in combination a suitable hanger adapted for screw threaded connection with a fixed support, a vertically adjustable central shade member carried by said hanger, and an independent shade member surmounting the first mentioned shade member and with it adjustable vertically by agency of the screw threaded connection aforesaid.

4. A lighting fixture including in combination a suitable hanger adapted for screw threaded connection with a fixed support, a vertically adjustable central shade member carried by said hanger, an independent shade member superimposed in concentric relation with the first mentioned shade member and with it adjustable vertically by agency of the screw threaded connection aforesaid.

5. A lighting fixture including in combination a suitable hanger adapted for screw threaded connection with a fixed support, a vertically adjustable central shade member carried by said hanger, an independent shade member having a central opening supported upon the first mentioned shade member and with it adjustable vertically by agency of the screw threaded connection aforesaid.

6. A lighting fixture including in combination a suitable hanger adapted for screw threaded connection with a fixed support, a vertically adjustable lower shade member of globular form carried by said hanger, an
