UNITED sates PATENT,
- FRED A. BRAoKE'r'r, or LANCASTER, Wiscons n. 1'
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED A. B'micKE'rna citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and use-,
ful Mortising-ltlachine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
This invention relates to the art of woodworking, and particularly to a new and useful motor power driven machine of the hollow chisel type.
An object of the invention is to provide a mortising machine of this nature designed for cutting mortises in various directions without relation to the grain of wood, and to form them with ease and rapidity.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved work support for the mor-' tising machine, mounted on the hollow standard of the machine by means of a cross head, whereby the work support may be-adjusted vertically on the standard, and at the same time adjusted pivotally, said cross head being so mounted and constructed, whereby a shank or leg of the tool supporting frame may move vertically in said standard, without interfering with the cross head or work support.
Another object of the invention is to provide a motor driven auger within the interior of a hollow chisel, and which comprises simple, e'liicient and practical features of construction.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed. 1
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of a mortising machine constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is .a vertical sectional view, substantially on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig 3 is an enlarged sectional view, showing the motor driven auger, the hollow chisel and the attending parts thereof, showing the auger geared to the motor, only a portion of which is shown. Fig. 4 is a sectional view throu h Fig. 3 and showing parts in elevation. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring more especially to the drawings', 1 designates the frame of the mortising machine, which is of the general or con ventional type, the same being provided with the bed plate or table 2, which is car- MORTISING-MACHINE.

ried in any suitable. manner bya orosshead 3, as shown at 4. The crosshead is mounted in. the guide slot 5,'and is held adjustably in different positions by the lever 6. The
bed plate ortable has a depending casting 7 provided with a segmental slot 8, through of the crosshead extends, there belng a su table nut orthelike for which a screw 9 holding the bed plate or table in dilferent adjusted positions upon the pivot 4, so that the table may be arranged to accommodate pieces of material of different shapes, and also so that a mortise may be cut through a piece of material on the angle desired.
Mounted on the frame 1 in any suitable manner, and connected to the foot pedal 11 (which is spring moved vertically thereby is a carriage 12 or second frame, and on a rearwardly extending bracket of this carriage or frame 12, which bracket is designated by the numeral 13, is the usual type of electric single phase substantially one-quarter horse power motor 14, the driving shaft 15 of which is provided with a spur gear 16, which meshes with the pinion 17. The pinion 17 is secured on the auger holder 18 by means of the set screw 19. The holder 18 revolves in suitable bearings of the carriage or second frame 12, said bearings being designated by the numeral 20. The holder 18 has the usual or conventional form of socket 21 to receive the auger bit 22, there being the conventional form of device 23 to secure the auger in said socket. The auger revolves in the hollow chisel 24, which is provided with the usual cutting edges 25. The chisel 24 is secured in the member 26 by means ofthe set screw 27 and the member 26 is in turn secured to the sleeve bearing 28 (which is carried by the carriage or second frame 12) by the set screw 29. The motor 14 is designed to receive its current from any suitable source of supply (not shown), switch 30 for starting and stopping the motor.
The material to be mortised is placed-upon the table or bed plate 2, and held by the clamps 31, which are held against displacement by the set screws 32, after which the motor is started. By manipulation of the foot pedal, carriage or second frame is moved vertically, and owing to the chisel moving with the carriage, the same receives vertensioned) so as to be there being the usual medium of the motor. The auger acts to remove the body of the mortise or cutfthe shavings being fed-upwardly through the hollow chisel, making eXit through the vent or opening 34, while the chisel cutsoutfthe corners of the mortise.
"The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful isz In a machine as set forth, the combina tion of a hollow standard having its-side walls provided with interior vertical guides and itsfront and rear walls provided with substantially registering elongated slots and a tool supporting framehaving ashank provided with an elongated slotandside ribs engaging said vertical guides, of a work support having a depending part'provided with asegment slot, a cross headmounted in said hollow standardand having'side chan- Gopiesof ithiS patent mayvbe obtained for 'ffivel'eents- 'ea'ch,=by add-ressing'the nels to be engaged by the opposing walls of the slot I in said shank, means extending "through e16 slot of the rear wall and through the cross head of the depending j 'part"of"'the support for clamping the cross head in vertical adjusted positions andhpiv- I otally mounting said support, means"'extendingtlrrouglnthefislot of said rear wall and the cross head and through the segment slot, whereby the suppo'rt 'may be held in adjust- --ed positions on its pivot; and means for ac- --tua t1ng the tool' "suppo'rt1ng frame.
