The connections under control ofthe `roch shaft govern the operation of the usual listing mechanism which, as illustrated, includes the arcuate type-carriers 6 having type 7 movably supported. by the free ends thereof and adapted to be driven by the hammers or drivers 8 to strike the ribbon 9 interposed. between the printing ends of the type and an adjacent platen 10. y
The mechanism for conit'rollino' the operation of the type-carriers and the hammers or drivers 8 constitutes 'a separate invention and such mechanism is not illustrated in detail herein.
Near each side of the machine, forwardly from. the platen, a ribbon spool 11 is mounted upon a vertical shaft 12. The shafts l2 are mounted in bearings 13 and are capable of limited vertical movement because of the spring washers 14C interposed between the heads the lower ends of the shafts' 12 and the bearings 13. rlhe ends of the ribbon attached to the spools 1l respectively, and said ribbon passes against rollers mounted on spindles 16 and is thereby supported adjacent to the front side of the platen in such position that the type 7 may be carried freely across and in front of the ribbon without contacting or engaging therewith. A beveled pinion 17 is rigid with each spool 11.

The plate 2? has a lateral projection 25 carrying a. roller 26 which cxtendsinto a notch 27 inthe upper end of a lever 28. The lever is pivoted intermediateof its ends upon a support 22) and the lower and of said lever is pivotally connected to a le ver 30 which mounted on a pivot 3l. The lever o0 is roniwcted by a connect-ing link B2 with a member having `its lower end pivotod to the arm or lever Ll and arranged to be rociprocated thereby when the shaft l is rocked. By this train of connections leading' from the rock shaft 1 the plate 23 will be operated in one direction by the forward roclringof the shaft 1 and in the 0pposite direction by the return movement of the shaft l under the inliuence of the'spring 3. This causes the pawl 22 to engage the teeth of the-ratchet 21 successively, so that the shaft 18 will be rotated intermittently inthe same direction, as a result of the rocking of the shaft 1 in opposite directions.l When the shaft 1,8 is rotated it necessarily rotates the spool 11 with which it is entrained. y
vBackward rotation of the shaft 18 is prevented by an abutment 34 pivoted upon a suaft 35 and engaging the ratchet 21. The abutment 34: is retained in engagement with the ratchet 21, by a retractile spring 36 connecting said abutment with a pin 37 eX- tending `from one of the walls of the hous: ing in which the mechanism is mounted. A screw 38 supported by the Wall of the housing passes through a slot 39 in a part of the abutment 34 which extends around the shaft 35 and thus prevents the abutment from becoming displaced.
'A disk 40 is rigid on the shaft 18 and is arranged to coperatie with a device which contacts with the dish to push the shaft 18 axially in order to complete the axial move ments thereof. The device comprises a lever 28a pivoted on the shaft 29 and having pinin-slot connection 30a with the lever 30. The
pin 30a is connected with the lever 30 by a spring 30h, so that when the-lever 30 operates the lever 28a will also be operated. The lever 28 has a pointed cam member 28b on the forward end thereof adapted to Contact with the oblique sides of the disk 40 andthereby push the shaft 18 axially in either direction to complete the axial movement thereof and force the pinions 2O into mesh with the pinions 17 respectively. When the shaft 18 is in the position illust-rated in Fig. 2, axial movement thereof is prevented by a releasable lock all comprising an arm mounted on pivot Ll2 and engaging Within a circumferential groove 43 adjacent to the pinion 20. The arm 41 is integral with an upwardly extending arm 44 which has a slot in its upper end through which the ribbon passes. lt is intended that the ribbon shallbe provided with a clip or other equivalent part 45 adjacent to the end thereof, so that said clip at the proper time will be drawn into engagement. with the upper end of the arm la and actuate said arm rearwardly, thus raising the arm 41 out of the groove 43 to permit the shaft 18 lto be moved axially and connect with the spool from which thc ribbon has been unwound.

2. ln a recording machine, the combination of a pair of spools for the ribbon, a revoluble shaft shiftableaxially into communicationwith said spools alternately to operate said spools alternately in opposite directions, a lever, means for oscillating` saidlever, a pawl actuated by the lever for revolving the shaft, a ratchet wheel on the shaft engaged by said pawl, latches forholding the shaft from axial movement, means operated by the ribbon for releasing said latches, springs for actuating said shaft axially when said latches are released, and a device actuated by the windings of the ribbon independently of the latch releasing means for energizing said springs alternately to shift said shaft alternately in opposite directions.
3. In a recording machine having a ribbon, mechanism for moving the ribbon com-A prising spools for the ribbon, a shaft for revolving saidspools, an oscillating lever, means for operating said lever in opposite directions, connections for revolving said shaft to actuate said spools by movement of said lever in one direction, latches for liolding the shaft from axial movement, means operated by the ribbon for releasing lsaid latches, springs encircling said shaft, a device for energizing said springs, and means actuated by the windings of the ribbon independently of said latch releasing means for actuating said device to energize said springs alternately.
4. In a recording machine, spools adapted to receive the ribbon, a pinion for revolving each spool, an axially movable shaft, pinions on said shaft adapted tomesh with the pinions for revolving saidspools alternately, means for revolving said shaft, springs forv actuating said shaft axially to mesh the pinions thereon alternately with the pinions for revolving said spools, latch devices for pre-4 venting prematurc axial movement of said shaft, a device actuated by the windings of the ribbon on said spools for tensioning said springs, and additional means under control ofthe ribbon for releasing said latch devices.
5. In a recording machine, spools for'the ribbon, pinions in `connection with said spools,ari axially movable revoluble shaft, pinions on said shaft adapted to mesh respectively at alternate times with the pinions in connection with said spools, means for revolving said shaft to revolve the spools, releasable latch devices for preventing premature axial movement of said shaft, springs for moving said shaft axially to en* gage alternately with the pinions in connecH tion with the spools, a device under control of the windings of the ribbon on the spools for tensioning said springs, and additional means actuated by the ribbon independently of said tensioning device for releasing said latch devices to enable said springs to move said shaft axially.
6. In a recording machine, spools for winding the ribbon, a pinion in connection with each spool, an axially movable shaft, a pinion on each end of said shaft, mechanism for revolving said shaft, springs encircling said shaft, an axially movable device actuated by the windings of the ribbon on said spools respectively, means carried by said device for tensioning said springs, latch devices preventing axial movement of said shaft until the ribbon is unwound from one spooland Wound on the other, and means actuated by the ribbon independently of said tensioning means for releasing said latch devices to enable said springs to engage the pinions on said shaft alternately with the pinions in connection .with said spools.
7.
