To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GILES V. CHRISTOPHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Midland, in the county of Midland and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Feeding and Packing Mechanism for Baling-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to feeding and packing mechanism for use in connection with cotton condensers, one of the objects of the invention being to provide means for use in connection with a condenser, for positively feeding the cotton into the press box of the apparatus where it will be placed under pressure by a follower.
A further object is to provide means under the control of the follower for shifting the feeding means automatically out of the path of the follower.
A further object is to provioe means whereby the feedin apparatus will be propelled by the mechanism of the condenser as long as the follower is in inactive position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawingsz-Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of the apparatus constituting the present invention, the same being shown combined with a condenser and press box. Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the feeding board and adjacent parts. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a portion of the drive mechanism of the feeder.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference A designates a condenser of any preferred construction, there being a discharge chute B extending therefrom and adapted to be supplied by rolls C driven by any suitable mechanism which may include a shaft D. The press box 1 is arranged to receive cotton from the chute B and disposed above the press box is a cylinder 2 containing a piston 3 to which a follower l is connected. This piston is to be operated by fluid under pressure or in any other preferred manner. The follower is normally elevated out of the press box and that end of the follower nearest the chute B has a gate 5 extending upwardly therefrom and so proportioned as to fit snugly within the press box 1 when the follower moves clownwardly into the press box, thus cutting off the supply of cotton from the chute B to the press box.
Mounted on one of the sills or beams 6 supporting the cylinder 2 are bearings 7 in which a shaft 8 is mounted for rotation, there being curved arms 9 secured to and adapted to rotate with the shaft, these arms being connected at their free ends by a feed board 10. Springs 11 are coiled about the shaft and each spring is secured at one end to one of the bearings 7 and at its other end to a collar 12 upon the shaft. These springs thus serve normally to hold the feed board 10 elevated above the chute B and out of the path of the follower 4t.
An arm 13 is mounted to rotate freely upon shaft 8 and is connected, by a pitman 14, to one end of a lever 15, this lever being fulcrumed on the shaft D and having one end portion slotted longitudinally, as shown at 16 so as to be movably engaged by a wrist pin 17. This wrist pin extends from a small gear 18 which meshes with and receives motion from a larger gear 19 secured to and revoluble with shaft D. Thus it will be seen that during one revolution of the gear 19, the gear 18 will be given a number of revolutions and during each complete revolution of this gear 18, the pitman 14: will be moved once forward and backward. Arm 13 is formed with a clutch member 20 and another clutch member 21 is feathered on the shaft 8 and is normally pressed in engagement with clutch member 20 by a spring 22. A shifting lever 23 is fulcrumed on one of the beams 6 and is connected to clutch member 21, one end of this lever 23 being projected normally into the path of the gate 5, as shown at 2 hen the follower 4: is elevated, gate 5 is held out of contact with lever 23 and, consequently, the clutch members 21 and 20 are held together. Thus as arm 13 is continually oscillating with lever 15, it will be seen that shaft 8 will be caused to move with arm 13 and the arms 9 and feed board I 10 will thus be swung back and forth within chute B so as to feed cotton from the chute and into the press box 1. As soon as the follower l is directed downwardly by the means provided for that purpose, gate 5 strikes the lower end of lever 23, thus shifting the lever and causing clutch member 21 to move away from the clutch member 20. Therefore, the shaft 8 being released from arms 13 will be rotated by springs 11 so as to promptly shift arms 9 and board 10 upwardly out of the path of the follower 4. lVhile arm 13 will continue to oscillate, there will be no movement of the feed board 10 until after gate 5 has moved upwardly and away from lever 23, whereupon the parts will become reset and operate as before.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a feed chute, a press box, a shaft, and means for continuously oscillating the shaft, of a feed member adapted to work within the chute and into andout of position across the end of the press box, means for coupling said feed member to the shaft, a follower operating in dependently of theshaft and movable into and out of the press box, and means operated by the movement of the follower toward the press box for uncoupling the feed member from the shaft.
2. The combination with a feed chute, a press box, a shaft, and means for continuously oscillating the shaft, of a feed member adapted to work within the chute and into and out of position across the end of the press box, means for coupling said feed member to the shaft, a follower operating independently of the shaft and movable into and out of the press box, means operated by the movement of the follower toward the press box for uncoupling the feed member from the shaft, and means upon the shaft for automatically shifting the released feed member out of the path of the follower.
3. The combination with a press box, a follower normally arranged thereabove, and a feed chute for directing material into the press box, of a shaft, an arm mounted to oscillate upon the shaft, means for transmitting motion to the arm, means for coupling the arm to the shaft, a feeding member fixedly connected to the shaft and adapted to work within the chute and into and out of position between the follower andp ess box, and means operated by the movement of the follower toward the press box for uncoupling the arm from the shaft, and means on the shaft for automatically rotating the shaft when released from the arm to shift the feeding member out of the path of the follower.
