FRICTION CLUTCH-PULLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,360, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed May 16, 1885.
new and useful Improvements in Friction Clutch-Pulleys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which, in connection with the io drawings making a part of this specification, will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the saine.
My invention relates to friction clutch-pulleys, or to a clutch device for operating a face frietionpulley; and it consists in certain novel features of construction of the clutch device, whereby 'the face friction-pulley is readily and quickly connected with or disconnected from 2o the driving-gear of the machine, thus starting or stopping the machine without shipping` the belt by which the friction-pulley is driven, in the manner to be hereinafter fully described. I have shown in the drawings the friction clutch-pulley and a device for operating the same applied to a loom of the ordinary and well-known construction but I have only shown such parts of the loom as are necessary and essential to illustrate the mode of operation of the clutch device and frictionpulley for starting and stopping the loom, as I only claim as my invention the clutch device for the friction-pulley and the means, substantially as shown, for operating the saine.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side view of the head of the loom, showing the operating-gears and other mechanism, a part of the frame of the loom and the mechanism for operating the friction-clutch being broken 4o away and not shown. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on line X, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow, same iigure. Fig. 3 represents, on a greatly enlarged scale, an outer end view of the clutch device, the parts contained therein being shown by dotted lines, the clutch-slide being removed in this figure. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section on line Y, Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow, same figure, the clutch-slide being shown in 5o position in this gure. Fig. 5 is a side view of the head of the loom, the same as shownin (No model.)
Fig. 1, except that more of the frame on the left of the :figure is shown, and the mechanism for operating the clutch is shown. Some of the parts shown in Fig. l are left off in this figure. Fig. 6 is an end view of the parts shown in Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrow V, same figure; and Fig 7 is a section of the lever-handle A, taken on line W, Fig. 5, looking in the direction of arrow U, 6o same iigure, for the purpose of showing the formation of the foot of said lever, as will be hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, the part marked k is part of the loom side or frame upon which are .supported the several parts shown in the drawings. j is the spur-gear wheel, secured upon'the bottom or main shaft, 7o u, and which meshes with the crankshaft gear c, secured upon the crank-shaft my. Said gear o has a handwheel, b, attached thereto. as shown in Fig. 2, which is provided'with a leather ring, 0, secured upon its outer face. The part marked e is the friction-pulley,loose on shaft m, and around which the drivingbelt passes, which is not shown in the drawings. The pulley a is a face friction-pulley, the faced side of which is pressed against the 8o leather ring o on the hand-wheel b, secured to the gear c, as before mentioned, for the purpose of operating said gear and parts connected therewith'.
I will now proceed to describe the clutch device proper, as clearly shown in section in Fig. 4L. The part marked' f is a hollow hub made fast on shaft m, and holds the three pins c e e, on which the three dogs ci d d swing. Said dogs are each provided with an adjusting- 9o screw, n, which turns in a threaded hole in said dog. The hub j' is made with holes for the ends of the dogs d to extend through. The part marked a is a metal ring loose on shaft m, but kept from turning round on the shaft by a pin, z, which projects into the hollow hub f, but which is not secured thereto. This ring x transmits the push from the adjustingserews n in the dogs d to pulley a, when the clutch is thrown into gear, as shown in Fig. 2. roo The metal ring .fr may be dispensed with, if desired, as its main object is to prevent the ends of the adjusting-sere wsl n coming in direct contact with the hub of the pulley a. The part marked g is the clutch-slide, loose on shaft m, and having'a groove, s, turned in it, for the purpose to be hereinafter stated. The clutch-slide g is turned taperon the inside, where the ends of the dogs d strike against it. (See Fig. 4, which shows the position of the slide g when the clutch is out of gear.) When the clutch is thrown into gear, the slide g is moved along the shaft on in the direction of the hub f. The ends of the dogs d are thus forced inward toward the shaft by the decreasing size of the taper, and the screws a push the collar and consequently the pulley a, along the shaft, forcing it against the leather ring o on the hand-wheel b, making a friction' suflieient to carry the shaft m around with the pulley a.
I will now proceed to describe the mecliani ism shown in the drawings for throwing the friction-cluteh into or out of gear, according as l it is desired to start or stop the loom or machine. The part marked l1l is the shipper-arm, upon the end of which are projections which fit into the groove s in the clutch-slide g. The shipper-arm h is bent at right angles and made hollow, so that it can slide back and forth on the stud w, secured in the frame lca coiled spring, t, encircling said stud w, and being contained within the arm h, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 6, for the purpose of throwing the clutch out of gear when the shipperhandle is released. D is the shipper-lever, pivoted or fulcrumed on the stud E, secured on the stand F, attached to the frame or side 7c. `One end of said lever fit-s over or connects with the readily understood by those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs. When it is desired to start the machine and put the friction clutch in gear, the shipper-arm Ais drawn out in the position shown by dotted lines, Fig. 5. This causes the pin G on the end of the shipper-lever D to slide along in the groove or slot H in the foot or end of the shipper-handle A, (sce Fig. 7,) which forces the other end of the shi pper-leverD inwardly toward the frame le, carrying with it the shipper-arm h, (which slides on the stud 20,) causing the clutch-slide g to be moved along on the shaft m, and to force the pulley c against the hand-wheel b of the gear c, in the manner .before explained. The slot H in the foot of the lever-handle A is so made that the pin C, after passing the neuter point, becomes locked, and the spring t serves to hold it. When it is desired to throw the clutch out of gear and stop the machine, the shipper-handle A is released. The spring t causes the shipper-arm h to slide along on the stud w, releasing the clutch-slide g and allowing the friction-pulley a to be disconnected from the hand-wheel b of the gear c, and to turn loosely on the shaft m.
Having described my improvements in frietion clutch-pulleys, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with hub f, provided with pins c, dogs d, and adjustingscrews a, of the elutch-slide g and means for operating the same, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the friction-face,
vpulley a, of the hub f, provided with pivoted dogs d, having` adjustable screws u, and the clutehslide g, constructed and operated substantially as shown and described.
3. The shipper-handle A, shipper-lever-D, and shipper-arm h, in combination with the clutch-slide g, for throwing into and out of gear the friction-pulley a, in the manner substantially as shown and described.
