Application filed May 18, 1916. Serial No. 98,376.
To all '10 77.0% it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. SHooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asheville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Folding Pail, of which the following is a specification.
he device forming the subject matter of this application is a dinner pail, and the object of the invention is to provide a structure of this kind which may be opened and collapsed readily, the construction being such that the parts of the pail will remain in an accessible position when the pail is open.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 shows in perspective, a pail constructed in accordance with the present invention, the same being open; Fig. 2is a perspective wherein the pail is shown in a closed condition; Fig. 3 is a cross section of the pail, closed; Fig. 4 is a perspective showing one of the side members of the pail.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 1 both inclusive, there is shown a pail comprising a box-like bottom 1 including a base 2, sides 3 and 4, and ends 5. If desired, the box-like bottom 1 may be divided into two compartments by a cross partition 6. j,
The invention includes a side member denoted generally by the numeral 7 and including an outer wall 8, a top 9 and ends 10. If desired, a partition 11 may connect the ends 10 to define a relatively shallow compartment adapted to contain knives, forks, spoons and the like. The ends 10 of the side member 7 carry ears 12 to which is pivoted a bail 1 1. Fixed to and upstanding from the top 9 near to the inner edge thereof is a trough 15. Pivot elements 16'connect the lower outer corners of the ends 10 of the side member 7 with the lower outer corners of the ends 5 of the box-like bottom 1.
The invention includes a side member 17 embodying an outer wall 18, ends 19 and a top 20 hinged at its outer edge as shown at 21 to the upper edge of the outer wall 18. The inner edge of the top 20 is provided with a depending lip 22. Fixed to and upstanding from the top 20 is a trough 23 complemental to the trough 15, the parts 15 and 23 cooperating to receive a cup 24:. The parts 15 and 23 not only serve as a holder for the cup 21, but, as well, the cup 2 1 cooperates with the parts 23 and 15 to hold the pail in the compact, folded form of Fig. 2. Projecting inwardly from the side member 17 is an extension denoted generally by the numeral 25. The exten sion 25 includes a bottom 26, end walls 27 and an inner wall 28. A longitudinal partition 29 extends between the end walls 27 to define, with the inner wall 28, a long compartment adjacent the inner wall 28, and to define an outer compartment, which, in its turn, can be separated into parts by a cross partition 30 extended between the long partition 29 and the outer wall 18. Links 31 and 32 are provided, the same being connected at their inner ends by a pivot element 33. The outer ends of the links 31 and 32 are connected, respectively, by pivot elements 3%, with the end walls 27 of the side member 17 and with the end walls 5 of the box-like bottom 1..
W' hen the pail is in the closed condition 'of Figs. 2 and 3, the cooperation between the several parts is as follows z-0ne side of the box-like bottom 1 is disposed beneath the extension 27 and is inclosed in the space defined by the parts 19 and 18 of the side member 17, the extension 27 lying above the boxlike bottom 1. The side member 7 is turned up into a vertical position, and the inner edges of the ends 10 of the side member 7 abut against the inner edges of the ends 19 of the side member 17, as indicated at in Fig. 2. The top 20 closes the upper end of the side member 17, the lip 22 on the top extending downwardly, so as to close the inner side of the compartment defined in the side member 7 by the partition 11 of the top 9. The cup 24 is engaged with the troughshaped elements 15 and 23 and the structure then appears as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. When the pail is to be opened, the cup 2 1 is removed from the elements 23 and 15. The side member 7 is then swung over into ;a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1. The
side member 17 is pulled outwardly, the
links 31 and 32 permitting such a movement, the inner edge of the extension 27 of the side member 17 being permitted to rest on the upper edge of the boxdik'e bottom 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. p
All parts of the structure, preferably are fashioned from metal.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A dinner pail includin'ga box-like bottom c0mprisi11gsides, a "base and ends; side member including a top, 'anjou'tei' wall and ends, and apart i'tion extendedtetween the ends and defining open sided ctmrip'artment adj acentth'e top of the 'sidememb'er;
pivot elements uniting the lower outer corners of the ends of the side member and of the bottom; a second side member including a boxdike extension located above the bottom, an outer wall, ends, and a top hinged to the upper edge of the outer wall and including a depending lip, the depending lip constituting erasure for the side of the compartment in the first specified side member, when the dinner'p'ail is closed; and links connecting"t11e 'ends oi? the bottom withthe ends of the extension.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiiXed my sigiiature in the presence of tj/v'o witnesses,
I JAMESM. SHOOK. Witnesses:
A. S. GUERARD, CHARLES Tnn'NoiiT'oN.
