Be it known that I, ALFRED OLIVIER, citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 3 Rue Deves, Neuilly-sur-Seine, Seine, in the Republic of France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cleaning Card-Cylinders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for cleaning card cylinders by vacuum and essentially comprises as a main feature two horizontal cross bars or a bar and a threaded spindle that are parallel to the generating lines of the cylinders and serve either to guide only or to guide and feed a carriage supporting a suction tube divided into two arms, which are adapted to the shape of the card and surround the latter to the required extent, so that the ends of these arms come to lie in front of the cylinders at suitable points, z. e. as regards the doiling cylinder at a point beneath the cover plate and as regards the main cylinder in the space that is uncovered by the door of the cover-plate when'this door is opened.
The crossbars that support the carriage are fixed in two side plates each of which is provided with two cylindrical pins, the position of which can be adjusted, and that are maintained by the supports used in sharpening the card. The side plate adj oiningthe pulley of the card carries the pivot of a lever which allows of opening from a distance the door of the cover-plate of the main cylinder this constitutes a verysimple safety device which is moreover completed by a connection between said device and the clutch mechanism for feeding the card, for the purpose of preventing the restarting of the feed motion after each stripping operation unless the door of the cover plate of the main cylinder has previously been closed.
An apparatus arranged according. to this invention has the advantage of being of a very simple and strong construction and that it can be placed in position without changing the parts of the card, while merely requiring a very simple and rapid initial adjustment. The carriage can be actuated by anybody without any danger and while the cylinders are rotating at their normal speed, so that the stripping of the flocks of both cylinders can be made simultaneously and very rapidly. As the flocks are usually unevenly distributed on the surface of the Specification of Letters Patent.

cylinders, it is possible moreover in view of the fact that the apparatus is actuated by hand, to completely remove the flocks by retarding or accelerating the advancement of the carriage according to requirements.
In the accompanying drawing in which an apparatus arranged according to this invention is shown by way of example: Figure 1 is an elevational view and Fig. 2 a plan View.
The apparatus comprises two side plates 1, 2 that are respectively mounted by means of adjustable cylindrical pins 5 on the two supports 3, 4: used for sharpening purposes that are arranged on the same side of the card. The two side plates 1, 2 are braced by a crossbar 6 and a screw 7, that are parallel to the generating lines of the cylinders 8, 9 of the card. The whole rigid arrangement formed by the two side plates 1, 2, crossbar 6 and screw 7 is fast on the card, pins 5 being adjusted so that screw 7 and crossbar 6 are horizontal, the whole contrivance being taken asunder for the purpose only of sharpening the mountings.
The crossbar 6 and screw 7 serve to guide the carriage 10 carrying the suction tube 14:, during the displacement of the carriage along the cylinders that are to be stripped of their flock. The displacement is controlled by the screw 7 that advances a stud 11 fixed in the sleeve 12 of carriage 1O. The screw 7 is actuated in one direction or the other by means of a removable crank 13.
The suction tube 14 mounted on the carriage 10 is divided into two arms 15, 16, that are firmly maintained by two supporting sleeves 17 of the carriage and are suitably bent and directed so that the end of arm 15 comes to. lie in front of the dofiing cylinder 8 beneath the cover plate, and that the end of arm 16 comes to lie in front of the main cylinder 9 in the space which is uncovered by the door of the cover plate when it is opened. Each of the arms 15, 16 has an aspirating nozzle 18 that can be adjusted at the required distance from the mountings in a simple and rapid manner by means of coupling sleeves 19.
On side plate 1, at the side of the card near the pulley, a lever 20 is pivoted that is provided with a stop pin 21 arranged to engage in the notches 22 of a segment 23 forming part of the side-plate 1. As is well known, the operator is obliged to stop the feed c. the supply of cotton to the main cylinder before he proceeds to the stripping operation and he of course restarts the feed as soon as the stripping is finished. The device for opening the door e'l. the cover plate by means of the safety lever is connected to the clutch mechanism oil. the feed cylinder, so that the feed cannot be restarted until the door of the cover plate has been closed, any accident being thus rendered impossible. This mode of mechanical con nection may of course be of any construction, and will depend on the clutch mechanism for the feed; no diiiiculty will be encountered by a man familiar with the art in establishing this connection in each case.
The invention is not restricted of course to details of execution shown and described, these details having been chosen only by way of example. The shifting of the carriage 10 in particular may without modifying the principle of this invention be ei'l'ected by hand by means of a push button; screw 7 would then be suppressed and replaced by a second crossbar; lever 20 could moreover be removable, the worlnnan who is entrusted with the stripping operation will. have alone the control of this lever, and place the latter on the machine only during the cleaning oporation.
Having 110w described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent is: V
1. In an apparatus for cleaning card cylinders, a suction nozzle, means for creating a suction through said nozzle, a carriage supporting the nozzle, two bars parallel to the generating lines of the cylinder and upon which the carriage 1S guided, one oi: said bars being screw threaded, means on the carriage for engaging with the screw thread,-
means for rotating the screw threaded bar, and a lever pivotally supported adjacent said last named means remote from the main cylinder and through the intermediary of which-lever the door in the cover plate of the main cylinder may be operated, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In an apparatus for cleaning card cylinders, a suction nozzle, means for creating a suction through said nozzle, a carriage supporting the nozzle, two bars parallel to the generating lines of the card cylinder and upon which the carriage is guided, side plates carrying the bars at the ends, means for removably and adjustably securin said plates, upon the frame of the carding engine, and a lever pivoted to one of said side plates remote from the main cylinder through the interi'nediary of which lever the door in the cover plate of the main cylinder may be operated, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. In an apparatus for cleaning card cylinders, a suction pipe divided into two branches, means for creating a suction through said pipe, a carriage supporting the two branches so that one of the same lies in front or the doiiing cylinder of the card, below the cover plate while the other lies in front of the main cylinder in the space which is uncovered by the door of the corresponding cover plate when it is opened, two bars parallel to the generating lines of the card cylinders and upon which the carriage is guided, side plates carrying the bars at the ends, a lever pivoted on one of said side plates at a point remote from the main cylinder, and means for operatively connecting the lever to the door in the cover plate of the main cylinder, substantially as described and V for the purpose set forth.
