To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hnnnnnr H. Dnnw, a citizen of the United States, and resident of ater-loo, in the county of Jefferson and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flue- Draft-Contr'olling Dampers; and I do here by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in damper structures for stoves or furnaces, and is more particularly directed to the provision of an improved damper adapted for association with the draft pipe of a stove or furnace to provide a means of communication with the outer atmosphere whereby air may be drawn into the flue pipe to lessen the draft exerted through the fire and thus reduce the combustion. 7
It is an important object of the present invention to provide such a damper arrangeinent which may act automatically to admit air into the flue pipe upon a sudden heavy draft in the pipe being created whereby a constant maximum of draft may be maintained through the fire to thus conduce to a desired constant rate of combustion.
The rate of combustion desired may at times vary, and it is therefore further an object to provide a damper arrangement having a variable resistance to its operation by the draft.
It is still further an object to provide a damper and variable control means therefor which is of exceedingly simple construction whereby it can very readily and economically be associated with the draft fines of stoves or furnaces and whereby a maximum ease of operation and durability in use is procured.
With the above and other objects and advantages in viewrthe invention resides more particularly in the novel combination and formation and arrangement of parts more particularly hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. p

11, the point of pivotal Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates the v'ertlcally extending flue pipe of a stove or furnace, and this flue pipe is provided with a lateral extension 6 which telescopically receives the sleeve portion 7 of an annular damper carrying body plate 8, the peripheral edge of the plate being extended beyond the said sleeve 7. Depending from a pivot connection 9 at the upper portion of the inner face of the body plate is a damper plate 10 which normally closes the central opening of the plate 8. Thus an excessive draft through the pipe 5 will draw air inwardly through the extension 6 and the draft through the fire will be correspondingly lessened. At the same time inasmuch as the present damper arrangement is preferably disposed adjacent the stove or furnace in the flue, a portion of the indrawn air will enter the fire chamber and will dispose in a blanket over the fire to further discourage an undesired degree of combus tion.
To provide a means for adjustably varying the resistance ofiered by the damper plate 10 to the suction of air into the flue, a control rod 11 is passed through the upper portion of the body plate 8 and a groove 7 struck in the adjacent sleeve portion 7, whereby a guide channel is formed in conjunction with the pipe portion 6 and pivota-lly depending from the inner end of this rod is a link 12 pivotally connected with an arm 18 extending inwardly from the inner end of anupwardly bowed weight bar 141, the other end of this weight bar being pivotally connected at 15 to the damper plate. Thus by shifting the control rod suspension of the link 12 will be correspondingly shifted whereby the bodily vertical movement of the weight incident to an inward swinging movement of the damper plate may be varied to thus vary the force necessary to swing the damper plate inwardly against the holding action of the said weight. The link l2 preferably comprises a loop between the stretches of which the intermediate portion of weight bar is held and the pivotal securement of this loop to the control rod preferably consisting in bending the inner portion of the rod in the fornf of an eye which receives the link loop, the free eX- tremity of this inner end bein' directed ,c'iownivardly and outwardly at 1 to form a stop adapted to engage the damper plate upon movement of the control rod to its outer limit of movement, whereby the damper plate may thus be locked against opening movement. This control means thus provides a readily adjusted means for varying the maximum amount of combustion permitted in the stove or furnace.
I claim:
1. The combination with a horizontally swinging damper plate of a rod slidable in the direction of swinging movement of the plate, a link pivotally connected with the rod, and a weight member pivoted to the link and to the damper plate.
2. The combination with a horizontally swinging damper plate of a rod slidable in the direction of movement of the plate, a loop member pivotally depending from the rod, an upwardly bowed weight member extending through the loop and having Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the one end pivoted to the plate and an arm --extending inwardly from the other end of the member and pivotally connected with the loop.

The combination with a horizontally disposed pipe member of an apertured body plate, a sleeve extending plate and engageable in the pipe portion, a damper pivoted thereto to close the aperture thereof, said plate and sleeve being provided with a guide channel, a control rod slidably passed through saidchannel, a link pivotally connected with the rod and a weight pivoted to the link and to the clamper plate.
