APPARATUS FOR PURIFYING INDI J 'STRIAL OILS AND FATS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 11916,.
Application filed May 14, 1914. serial No. 838,487.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS JULES Nofin, a citizen of the French Republic, and residing at 18 Rue du Moulin. a Vent, Epernay, Marne, France, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Improved Apparatus for Purifying Industrial Oils and Fats, of which the following is a complete specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved apparatus for purifying oils, fats and greases which have been used in workshops and factories either for lubricating machinery or parts of machinery, or for other purposes and in the course, of which use all kinds of impurities have become incorporated in theseoils, fats and greases. Oil, fat or grease rendered impure by such uses is hereinafter referred to as used oil. Q
One example of the improved apparatus 1 is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a vertical axial section of the entire apparatus with a convenient heating means. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. I
In the example shown, the improved apparatus consists of a, vat or similar vessel a for containing the used oil to be purified,
having a conical bottom b fitted at its lower end with a blow-off cook a This vat or c0llector a for the used oil or grease is closed by means of a lid (1 through which there extends a pipe e toward the bottom of the vat, for instance as far as the commencement of the cone 6. This pipe e ends at its upper end outside the vat in a funnel f. The cover all need not close absolutely airtight. An oil exit pipe 9 extends from the upper part of the cylindrical body of the vat a. The vat is inclosed in a casing h which forms a jacket 2' for the circulation of hot water around the vat. The water enters through an upper inlet, 7' and after circulating passes out through a lower outlet k. The heating of this water may be efiected in various ways, for instance by utilizing the hot exhaust gases of a gas engine where the apparatus is set up in a'factory or workshop using a gas engine, or by utilizing steam. In the first case there is arranged on the gas exhaust pipe m, a small boiler n of the shape shown in cross section in Fig. 2 arranged astride the pipe m. From the upper part of this boiler there extends a vertical pipe 0 which opens into the inlet j of steam it is suificientto arranged at the bottom of the casing h a steam nozzle 0 to which steam is supplied by a pipe w.
The operation is as follows: The oils, fats and greases which have been used and which it'is desired to purify are collected in the vat a. The water jacket 2' is heated as de-- scribed so as to produce an automatic and continuous circulation of the hot water. The hot water enters the casing k at a temperature which is generally about 70 degrees O. and passes out through the outlet 7: at a temperature of about degrees C. The heating is continued for about 36 hours, at the expiration of which all the impurities which have been carried over mechanically by the oil or grease during the lubrication of machinery have become separated, precipitated and collected in the conical bottom 6. When the purification has been carried far enough, the purified oil is removed by admitting water into the vat a through the pipe 6, whereupon the purified oil will flow out through the pipe 9. When the vat has been filled with water the blowofi cock 0 is opened and the impurities are discharged therethrough.
The improved apparatus has the advantage of being simply and economically constructed, of being readily kept in working order, and of being reliable and automatic in operation. In particular, it is not liable to become choked with dirt as is the case for instance in apparatus having heating coils whichare immersed directly in the liquid or substance to be purified, and in which the impurities have a tendency to be deposited upon said coils, thereby necessitating frequent cleaning.
What I claim is:
An apparatus for purifying oils and fats, comprising a jacketed vat having an oil discharge at its upper end and a sediment discharge in its bottom, a water pipe extending into the vat, a boiler, pipes leading from the boiler into the upper and lower In testimony whereof I have hereunto set portions of Water jacket of the vat, a water my hand at Paris (France), this second day 1.
supply pipe adapted to discharge into the of May, 191% pipe of the vat an expansion vessel connect- 5 ed with the water pipe, and a pipe leading Y JULES NOEL from the expansion vessel and connected In the presence of two witnesses: with the pipe leading from the boiler to the CHAS. P. PRESSLI, lower portion of the Water jacket. JEAN G. SMITHBQN.
