Description

R. E. KIRSCH.
MULTIPL'E'SEAT UNIT. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 22, I916.
1 09,452. Patented Dec. 19, 1916.
@mUoM OJ: %mz/ To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. Krnsorr, a citizen" of the United States, andresident of lvlilwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple-Seat Units; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in seat structures and is more particularly directed to the provi sion of a structure wherein a plurality of seat portions are combined in a single unit, to thus reduce the essential number of sup porting legs, whereby a structure is provided which is relatively simple and which permits ready cleaning therearound by means of a broom or the like.
It is in general the object of the present invention to simplify and otherwise improve the construction of structures of this character, and it is more particularly an object to provide such a structure which may be very readily assembled to adapt it for use as a knock-clown or portable structure if so desired.
It is further an object to embody the foregoing features in a folding seat structure wherein the assembled relation of various supporting parts holds the seats for proper pivotal movements.
WVith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, arrangement and formation of parts more particularly hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is avertical transverse sectional view through a chair seat unit constructed in accordance with the present invention, this view being taken on the line 11 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of a seat unit, with parts broken away to more clearly disclose the pivot mounting of the seats.
Referring now more particularly to th accompanying drawings, there is provided a pair of end supports preferably comprising each a quadrantal frame 5 at the upper corner of which is provided a pair of spaced arms 5 between which the body bar 6 of the seat unit is secured as by the bolts 6, the bar seating onthe frame to relieve strain on the bolts. This body bar is rectangular in cross-section and is formed in channel H Specification of Letters Patent.

shape to provide a relatively large crosssection facilitating attachment of the seat carrying bars-7- These bars are secured to the body bar by spaced depending arms 8 arms 8, bar 12 and brace 13 preferably comprise an integral structure.
The seats proper are preferably each formed of a plate 1a of material braced at its side edges by angle irons 15 and each seat proper is pivotally mounted between a respective pair of seat bars by pivot shafts 16 which are loose in pivot openings 17 formed in the intermediate seat bar portions and which have reduced ends engaged in respective pivot openings 18 of the single irons 15.
The pivot shafts are disposed in their respective pivot openings as the seat carrying bars 7 are assembled and are held against displacement by the shoulders formed by their reduced ends. It is thus noted that the bolts 6 and 9 form the only means for holding the entire structure assembled, and thus a ready assembly and disassembly of the structure may be had, to adapt it as a portable or knock-down structure if so desired.
It is noted that the body bar 6 forms the forward support for the seat angle irons 15, and that the various strains incident to persons Weights on the seats are so distributed that strain on the securing bolts is obviated whereby they serve merely to hold various parts against displacement, and thus a structure of maximum strength is procured.
I claim:
1. A seat structure comprising a body bar, members extending laterally in spaced relation from said bar, back portions carried by said members, and seat portions pivotally carried by said members and adapted to rest on the body bar.
2. A seat structure comprising a channeled body bar, members extending 'later ally therefrom and including portions embracing and seating on said bar, and seat and back portions carried by said members.
3. A seat structure comprising a body bar, members extending laterally therefrom and provided with pivot openings, seat portions provided at their sides with pivot openings, pivot shafts disposed in the open- 10 ings of the said members, and reduced extensions at the ends of theshafts engaging V in the openings of the seat portions.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee,
in the county of Milwaukee and State of i Gno. W. YOUNG, M. E. DOWNEY.
