PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedDec. 19, 1916.
Application filed March 20, 1916. Serial No. 85,274.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK WIARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State, of
a Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly tothat classof plows having a frog which to is constructed of pressed or bent sheet steel.
When plows are used in soil which is comparatively free of'sand, as for instance in the western part of the United States, it is practical to extend the mold board to the front endor corner of the frog because such soil has comparatively little wearing effect on the mold board and the latter therefore does not have to be renewed often. Sandy soil, such as found in the eastern part of the United States, has, however, a decided wearing effect on'the plowand for this reason it is customary to arrange a renewable shin piece above the plow point and in front of the mold board so astoformacontinuation of the latter which shin piece takes the hull; of the wear which otherwise would be exerted on the mold board and is removably mounted on thefrog'so that the same can be renewed from time to time when worn out without necessitating renewal of the entire mold board and incidentally avoiding the heavier cost which otherwise would be incurred.
The application of a shin piece to east or malleable iron frogs is comparatively easy but the attachment of a shin piece to the front edge or corner of the wings of a pressed steel frog presents difliculties which have heretofore not been overcome and no sh1n pleces have therefore been used in the past in connection with pressed steel plow frogs because the construction of the same would not permit such use.
. The object of this invention is to provide an improved form of plow frog which is constructed of pressed sheet metal to which a shin piece may be removably attached so that the latter may be easilyand conveniently renewed when worn out without requiring the renewal of the mold board.
Inthe accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the furrow sideof the same. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the landside of the same. Fig.
3 rise er ical l ngitudinal secti n the eof.-
Figs. 4: and 5 are horizontal sections taken on the correspondingly numbered lines in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the frog detached from the otherparts of the plow.
Similar characters of reference indicate correspondingparts throughout the several views.
The body of the frog is constructed from a piece of sheet metal which is bent, pressed or formed in the mannar similar to that heretofore practised so as to produce two wings 1, 2, which are connected at their front ends and diverge rearwardly, the left .wing l in thisinstance being arranged vertically and lengthwise of the line of draft and forming the landside wing of the frog while the other wing 2 is curved laterallytoward the right and forms the furrow side or mold board side of the frog. i V
3 represents the body of the plow beam which is provided at its rear end with a downwardly. projecting standard 4 secured to the inner side of the landside wing of the frog by means of bolts 5, as shown, or by any other suitable means.
6 represents the-plow point which is secured by bolts. 7 to the lower portion of the mold board side or furrow side wing of the frog and 8 the mold board which is secured by bolts 9 to the outer side of the rear part of the mold board wing of the frog and above the plow point so that the front edge of this mold board is arranged at a distance rearwardly of the front corner of the frog.
Above the front part of the plow point and extending rearwardly from the front corner of the frog to the front edge of the mold board is the shin piece 11 which is removably attached to the upper front part of the mold board wing of the frog so that when the same becomesworn out it can be renewed independently of the mold board which does not wear so fast.
On the lower part of the landside wing of the frog a landside 12 is secured to the outersideof thiswing by means of bolts 13. This landside terminates at its front end behind the front upright edges of the plow point and the shin piece so that these front edges of the plow point and shin piece protect the front edge of the landside and take the wear during the operation ofplowing instead of the landside.- On the rear part of its lower edge the landside is provided with the usual shoe 1a which is secured thereto by bolts 15.
The present improvement relates to the means whereby the shin piece is detachably mounted on the upper part of the front corner of the frog and as shown in the drawings this is preferably accomplished as follows: 16, 17 represent upper and lower attaching ears or lugs which are punched or struck out of the body of the frog and bent so that the same are flush or in line with the mold board wing of the frog and practically form a forward continuation of the same. One of these attaching ears, for instance the upper one 16 is preferably stamped or struck out of the stock forming the mold board wing of the frog, while the other or lower attaching ear 17 is stamped or punched out of the stock forming the landside wing of the frog. Each of these attaching ears is preferably formed by cutting a U-shapedslit in the respective wing of the frog which slit has its legs projecting forwardly from the crossing between the legs leaving the metal within this slit attached at its front end to the body of the frog. The metal so inclosed by these slits is then bent forwardly into a position in which it is flush or in line with the mold board wing of the frog, thereby forming openings 18, 19 in the respective wing in rear of the attaching ears. The latter are provided with bolt holes 20, 21 which are adapted to receive the bolts 22, 23 whereby the shin piece is secured to these ears and to the adjacent part of the outer side of the mold board wing of the frog. The attaching ears terminate short of the front end of the shin piece so that the latter takes the wear while plowing instead of the attaching ears.
The attaching ear which is cut, punched or stamped out of the mold board wing of the frog, in this instance the upper attaching ear, is provided on its outer side corresponding to the outerside of the landside wing with an inward indentation or recess 24 which is adapted to receive the nut of the companion bolt 22 passing through this attaching ear and the shin piece, thereby forming a flat seat for this nut to rest against and also a cavity or pocket in which this nut may be arranged and not only rendered readily accessible for applying a wrench or other tool thereto but also permitting of keeping this nut within the outer face of thelandside wing so that thesame will not form an interfering obstruction on this side of the plow. a
The opening 19 formed in the landside wing of the frog by the forward bending of the lower attaching ear provides a clearance space or pocket which is adapted to receive the nut of the companion bolt which secures the shin piece to the respec tive attaching ear and not only permits this nut to be conveniently operated by means of a' wrench or other tool but also. permits of retaining this nut in a retracted position in which it will not/form an interfering obstruction on the respective side of the plow. This manner of constructing the pressed sheet metal frog of the plow so as to render the same capable of mounting the shin piece removably thereon is exceedingly simple, the same is accomplished without materially adding to the cost of the plow and the same in nowise interferesivith other parts of the plow nor does it introduce conditions to which users of plows are not accustomed.
Although the construction shown is the best embodiment of my invention which has occurred to me the same may be obviously varied in some respects'without departing from my invention as summed up in the claims appended hereto.
I claim as my invention: 1. A plow comprising a frog constructed of a sheet of metal by bending the sameto form two rearwardly diverging wings, a landside mounted on one'of said wings, a mold board mounted on the other wing, and one of said wings having an attaching ear struck out of the same and bent forwardly, and a shin piece fastened to said ear.
2. A plow comprising a frog constructed of a sheet of metal whichis bent to form a landside wing and a mold board wing which are connected at their front ends and diverge rearwardly, and an attaching ear struck out of one of said wings and bent forward flush with said mold board wing, and a shin piece fastened to said ear.
3. A plow comprising a frog constructed of a sheet of metal by bendingthe same to form two rearwardly diverging wings, a landside mountedonone of said wings, a mold board mounted on the other wing, an upper attaching ear struck out of one of said wings, a lower attaching ear struck out of the other wing, said earsbeing arranged at the front ends of said wings and projecting forwardly therefrom, and a shin piece mounted on said ears.
