This invention relates to newand useful improvements in clothes mangles. j
'An object of the present invention is to provide a' clothes mangle in' which the material to be mangled or smoothed is wound upon' cylindrical bodies and placed upom a plane surface and upon which cylindrical-- bodies is mounteda weighted boxor similar receptacle that is adaptedtobemoved thereover to cause the bodies to roll so to press the excessmoisture therefrom and render-thefabric smooth and free of creases and wrinkles.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood and the accompanying drawings show the preferred form of construction for carrying these ideas into operation.
In the accompanying drawings which show the preferred embodiment of the invention :Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a clothes mangle built in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, showing the rack bar carried by the weighted box and the pinion meshing therewith for reciprocating the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the weighted box resting upon the rollers to be mangled, and Fig. A is a vertical cross sectional view showing the driving mechanism and the manner of weighting and reciprocating the box.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, the reference numeral 10 designates the corner posts of the supporting frame that are connected by longitudinal and transverse base struts 11 and 12 respectively to provide a rectangular frame. A table 13 is carried by the. corner posts 10 preferably midway the height thereof, while the upper ends of the corner posts are connected by the longitudinal side rails 14 and 15.
A box-like receptacle 16 is freely mounted upon the table 13 and has the open upper end thereof closed by removable cover walls 17 located adjacent each side thereof, while the central portion receives the rack bar 18' Specification-of Letters-Patent. A

The operating-mechanism for reciprocating the box-like"receptacleincludes a pair of oppositely positioned power stub shafts 20 that are journaled in the side rails 14: and 15 and upon the outer squared end of which may be removably mounted a crank handle 21. A

A pair of upstanding threaded bolts 27 is carried by eacho'f'the side-rails 14' and upon each-bolt is positioned a compression coil spring 28. A shaft 29 is positioned transversely of the frame and has the ends thereof extending between the bolts 27 and retained in such osition by the cross head 30 loosely received on the upper threaded ends of the bolts 27 and engaged by the thumb nuts 31 slightly to compress the coil springs and move the cross heads downwardly into engagement with the shaft 29. A central pinion 32 is carried by the shaft 29 and is in mesh with the rack teeth 19 of the bar 18, while pinions 33 are carried by the ends of the shaft 29 and are in mesh with the driving gears 22. It will be seen that when the pinion 32 is revolved by the meshing gears 22 and 33 that such rotary motion will be converted into reciprocating motion by engagement of the pinion 32 with the rack bar 19 on the box-like receptacle 16.
In the use of the device, the pieces of fabric 3 are wound upon the spindles 35 and placed upon the table 13 andthe box 16 rests thereon with the desired pressure, as by the reception of a suitable number of weights 36, asis indicated in Figs. 2 and 4. By operating the driving gear 22, the pinions 33 upon the shaft 29 are revolved and such motion is communicated to the pinion 32 that is in mesh with the rack bar 19 and the box 16 is thereby reciprocated and bears with the desired pressure upon the fabric 34 on'the spindles 35. The box 16 is limited in its movements by the pins 37 carried by the side rails 14 and extending into longitudinal slots or openings 38 in the side walls of the box. directly with the operating mechanism disconnected or removed, the handles 39 upon the ends of the box may be gripped by an operator at each end thereof and reciprocated as desired.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
l/Vhat We claim as new is 1. In a mangle, a frame having operating means therein, a pressing member in the frame adapted to move over a fabric to be pressed and having a rack thereon, a transverse shaft extending over the pressing member having a pinion thereon meshing with the rack and having connection with said operating means for driving the shaft, movable bearings for the shaft, adjustable means engaging the bearings to move the same and vary the tension of the pressing member upon the fabric, and springs beneath the bearings to automatically raise the same upon the release of said adjustable means and permit the quick adjustment of the shaft.
2. In a mangle, a frame having operating means therein, a pressing member in the frame adapted to move over a fabric to be pressed and having a rack thereon, a transverse shaft extending over the pressing member, having a pinion thereon meshing with the rack and having connection With said operatingmeans for driving the shaft, a pair of bolts arranged at opposite sides and at opposite ends of the shaft, crossheads slidably mounted on the bolts and bearing over the shaft, springs on the bolts beneath the cross-heads to urge the latter upwardly, and adjusting nuts on the upper ends of the bolts and adapted to be turned downwardly against and to move the crossheads and the pressing member toward the fabric.
