make and use the same, reference being had I to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in end structures for railway cars,-
and consists in a new and improved arrangement of framing parts at the end of the car so arranged as to provide vertical posts or framing members designed to resist cargo thrusts against the end, and connected in a novel and effective manner-to the end sill and upper framing members in such fashion as to secure great strength.
My invention in some respects constitutes an improvement on the construction illustrated in U. S. Letters Patent to Henrion and McRobbie, granted October 24, 1905, No. 802,689, the particular improvements thereover residing in the improved connection of the framing members and the increased stability in the structure thereby secured.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an end framing construction in which commercial metallic forms are employed 1n con unct1on with car framing membersw hich are commonly of wood, the
being designed for application construction either to new cars, or for substitution in old cars, and certain of the metallic members being designed to supplant certain wood framing members commonly employed in,
the car framing.
Other and further objects of the invention will be obvious or pointed out'hereinafter.

members abut t e Referring to the illustrations in detail, it will be understood that the box car shown is of common construction, and includes a plurality of longitudinal sills 1, an end sill 2, side plate 4, end plate 5, ridge pole 6, corner posts 9, fascia plate 10, and flooring 11, all constructed in usual fashion and disposed in a customary relationship. In conunctlon with these, I employ a sill plate 7 which may be of general Z or L sect-ion. so
that it will conform to the outer corner of the end sill extending down on .the face thereof behind the dead block 8 and to receive the truss rods 12, and exfnding back over the upper face of the end srll to the line of the wall sheathing, where it terminates in an upwardly directed flange.- This sill plate is secured to the end sill by horizontal bolts 14 and vertical bolts 15.
In connection with the end plate 5, -I'en 1- ploy a marginal angle member 16, preferably of 2 cross section, the same being/applied to the lower edge ofthe end plate with a flange extending up behind the inner face of the latter and secured thereto by bolts 17, and the outer flange extending downwardly adjacent the outer corner of the end plate.
At itsends the marginal angle member is se- I tensions 18. also securely anchored at its ends to the side plates, the means for effecting such connection comprising a connecting angle 22 which is bolted to the side plate, and a gusset member 23 riveted to the horizontal flange of the connecting angle and the web of the marginal member 16. The sill plate 7 is secured to the corner posts in somewhat similar fashion by the socket castings 19 which are riveted to the horizontal flange of the sill plate, and bolted to the corner posts.
' By virtue of the structure just described, it will "be observed that I provide auxiliary transverse framing members securely combinedi and cooperating with the end sill and end plate providing metallic surfacings for outerfaces thereof and affording means of connection between said members and the corner posts.
Spaced apart at suitable intervals transversely of the end, I dispose vertical angle members 20, the same being preferably of Z section-in order to secure greatest strength in combination with convenience in assembling. lower ends the vertical members abut the horizontal flange of the sill plate 7 and the upstanding vertical flange thereof. Threesided corner angles '21 secure the vertical members to the marginal member 16, said corner angles being riveted to the webs and flanges of the vertical members and to the web of the terminal member. Similar corner angles connect the vertical members at their lower ends to the sill plate 7, said angles being riveted to the webs and flanges of the vertical members and to the horizontal Web of the sill plate. This disposal of the vertical members brings their inner flanges into alinement, and to these flanges are applied the sheathing boards 24 which said boards being secured in the usual fashion at their ends to the corner posts, and by bolts 24. 1n an end framing of this form, it will be observed that the vertical members 20 cooperate with the end sill and end plate to form vertical supporting members or posts at the end of the car, which posts function to support the load of the roof and" upper framing. In conjunction with the marginal member 16 and sill plate 7, these vertical members form a stable end frame securely anchored to the underframe by the truss rods 12, and to the side plates by the gusset 23 and joint angle 22. At its corners, this framing securely ties the corner posts by.

vertical members-20 and attach ing members 19, 18, 23 and 22, all being riveted together, are disposed in place at the end of the car as a unitary structure, and then the securing bolts 14, 17 and 22 are secured in place, after which the end wall sheathing is applied. As a result of this construction, it will be observed that the end wall is greatly strengthened by the rigid vertical members 20 to resist cargo thrusts and that said vertical members 20 are in turn securely anchored to the upper and lower framing members of the car, not only the end sill and end plate, but also the longitudinal framing members; the framing members themselves, such as the side plates, end plates and corner posts, the corner posts and underframe, and the under-frame and end plates are secured in very substantial and effective manner. Moreover, certain features of the construction perform specifically important functions, the marginal member 16 and the sill plates 7 operating to prevent shattering of'the end plate and center sill by strains in the verticalmembcrs 20, and the contour of the termithe sill plate 7, marginal,
nal member and sill plate operating effectively to prevent ingress of water at top and bottom of the wall structure. The vertical members 20 also provide convenient attaching places for ladders or grab irons. In connection with them it may be desirable to employ an angle member 25 attached to the corner post to which one end of the ladder rod or grab iron is riveted, the other end thereof being secured to the outer flange of the adjacent vertical member 20. The form of the members, of course, enables my using the same form of cornerangle 21 in all places where a connection between the vertical and horizontal members is desired.

1. An end framing for railway cars comprising the combination of end sill, end plate, side plates and corner posts, an an ular sill plate applied to the end sill on its top and outer sides, a marginal metallic member applied to the lower margin of the end plate, vertical members extending between and secured to said sill plate and said marginal member, wall sheathing abutting said vertical members, members at the extremities of the sill plates engaging the corner posts, and members at the extremities of the marginal member secured to the corner posts and the side plates.
2. A car end framing construction comprising the combination with wooden end sill, end plate and side plates, of vertically disposed metallic members, transversely extending metallic members interposed respectively between the lower extremities of said vertical members and the end sill and the upper extremities of said vertical mem bers and the end plate, attaching means securing said transversely extending members respectively to the end sill and the end plate and both of said transversely extending members to the vertically disposed members, and means disposed at the extremities of said transversely extending members for securing them to longitudinal framing members of the car.
3. A car end framing construction comprising vertically disposed bar members, transversely directed: metallic members connecting said vertical members at their ends, said transversely extending members being shaped to conform to the car end sill and end plate respectively, and means for securing said 9. vertically disposed bar members extending intermediate said transverse members and secured thereto, and means at the extremities of said transverse members for engaging corner framing members of the car.
An end framing for cars comprising an end plate, a Z bar having its Web applied to the lower face of the end plate and one of its flanges abutting the inner face of the end plate, an end sill, an angular sill plate having one flange overlying the end sill and another flange abutting the outer face of the end sill, bar members extending intermediate the said Z bar and sill plate and secured at their extremities thereto, end wall planking supported against said bar members, and means for securing the Z bar and the sill plate to the end plate and end sill respectively. i
6. A car end framing comprising an end plate, a transverse bar member applied to the'lower face thereof, an end sill, a trans verse bar member applied to the upper face thereof, vertically arranged bar members disposed intermediate the end plate and end sill and secured at their ends to said transverse members, and means for securing the transverse members to the end plate and end sill respectively.
